Rabindranath Tagore University is a public state university located in Hojai, Hojai district, Assam. The university is established by Rabindranath Tagore University Bill, 2017 which was passed by the Government of Assam on 7 September 2017. It was created by upgradation of Hojai College of Hojai, Hojai district. [1]

In August 2024 Dr. Manabendra Dutta Choudhury took charge as 2nd Vice Chancellor of the University. On 7 June 2019, Amalendu Chakraborty took charge as the first Vice-Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University. [2] It was named after Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel laureate polymath, poet, and artist from the Indian subcontinent.

Sir Muhammad Azizul Haque, KCSI, CIE, also known as Muhammad Azizul Huq or Mohammad Azizul Huque, was a Bengali lawyer, writer and public servant. He studied at Presidency College and University Law College in Calcutta. He worked to better the condition of Muslim people, primarily in the rural farmlands. This led him to work with Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque, Sir Abdulla Suhrawardy, Sir Salimullah and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He remained friends with many throughout his life.

Rai Bahadur Surya Kumar Bhuyan MBE (1892–1964) was a writer, historian, educator, social activist, storyteller, essayist, professor and a poet from Assam. He has written many books on ancient history, stories, essays, biographies, etc. in the world of Assamese literature. He presided over the Asam Sahitya Sabha (1953) held at Shillong. Rabindranath Tagore University, established on 11 July 1964, is a general degree college situated in Hojai, Assam. This college was formerly called as Hojai College and was affiliated to the Gauhati University. The college offers H.S. courses and three-year degree courses in bachelor's degrees of arts, science and commerce. Master's degree in Assamese was started in the academic session 2016–17. The educational institution also provides courses in Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL)..

Bhattadev University is a public state university located at Pathsala, Bajali district, Assam. The university is established by Bhattadev University Act, 2017 which was passed by the Governor of Assam on 7 September 2017. It was created by upgrading Bajali College of Pathsala, Bajali district. It was named after Sri Sri Bhattadev, also known as Vaikunthanath Bhagwat Bhattacharyya, an important preceptor of the Ekasarana Naam Dharma and the father of Assamese prose because he composed Shrimadbhagawatam and Shrimadbhagawatgita in classical Assamese prose in the 17th century AD. The UGC has recognized Bhattadev University as an institution “empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956 by conducting courses through its own departments, its constituent colleges and/or through its affiliated colleges in regular mode with the approval of concerned statutory bodies/councils” vide its letter F.No. 9-12/2019 (CPP-I/PU) dated 25 September 2019.

Majuli University of Culture is a state government university located in Majuli, Assam dedicated for research, teaching and education in the field of humanities and performing arts. The university is established by Majuli University of Culture Bill, 2017 which was passed by the Government of Assam on 7 September 2017. Recently, the Government of Assam announced that the University will be upgraded to a full fledged University having Humanities, Commerce and Science disciplines apart from the Cultural and Performing Arts part catering to the need of the common people of Majuli District and rest of the state in sync with the New Education Policy. On 13 July 2018 Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone for the state's first cultural university at Majuli to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.
