Madhabdev University is a public state university located in Narayanpur, Assam. The university is established by The Assam Act No. XXXV of 2017 which was passed by the Government of Assam on 7 September 2017. [1] It was created by upgrading Madhavdev College of Narayanpur, North Lakhimpur. [2] [3]

It was named after Sri Sri Madhavdev, an important preceptor of the Ekasarana Dharma known for his loyalty to his guru, Srimanta Sankardev.

The university has jurisdiction over some colleges in Biswanath district, Lakhimpur district.

History

The first meeting for the establishment of the college was held on 24 November 1963 at Madhavpur Higher Primary School near Narayanpur town and in 1964 the college was established as Narayanpur College. The first president was Kamal Gogoi and the founding secretary was the freedom fighter Purnananda Dutta . The first ad hoc management committee of the college was formed on 1 July of that year. In the first year, there were 75 students and 5 teachers in the departments of English, Assamese, Political Science, History and Economics The college was renamed as Madhavdev College on 2 August 1966.

In 1964, Guwahati University and in 1965, Dibrugarh University accredited the pre-university class. The college received its graduation course from Dibrugarh University in 1967. The Science Branch was started in 1978. [4]

Duliajan is an industrial town of Dibrugarh district in the Indian state of Assam located in the upper north-east corner of India. The town is about 45 km east of Dibrugarh City. Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician who has served as Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways since 2021. He also has been the Member of the Rajya Sabha representing Assam since 2021 and also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs since 2021. He previously served as the 14th Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021 and as a member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Majuli from 2016 to 2021 and for Moran from 2001 to 2004. Sonowal earlier served as the Assam state unit President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2012 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2016. He also served as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016 and the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development from 2014 to 2014 and the member of the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur from 2014 to 2016 and from Dibrugarh from 2004 to 2009. He was also the member of the Asom Gana Parishad from 2001 to 2011.

Madhavdev (1489–1596) is an important preceptor of the Ekasarana Dharma known for his loyalty to his guru, Srimanta Sankardev as well as his artistic brilliance. Initially a sakta worshipper, he was converted to Ekasarana Dharma by Sankardev and became his most prominent disciple. He became the religious as well as artistic successor of Sankardeva after the latter's death in 1568. He is known particularly for his book of hymns, the Naam Ghosa, as well as a large selection of songs called Borgeets.

Narayanpur is a developmental block (place) located in the Lakhimpur district of the northeastern Indian state of Assam, within the North Lakhimpur subdivision. It falls under the Bihpuria constituency of the Assam Legislative Assembly and is served by the Narayanpur Police Station. The town of Narayanpur, situated at the center of the block, serves as the headquarters of the Deori Autonomous Council, the governing body of the Deori ethnic group. Narayanpur is also notable as the birthplace of several famous Vaishnavite saints, including Mahapurush Madhavdev.

The Sonowal Kachari are one of the indigenous peoples of the state of Assam in Northeast India. They are of Tibeto-Burman origin, and are closely associated with the other ethnic groups of Assam, which are commonly referred to as Kachari.

Assam – 16th largest, 15th most populous and 26th most literate state of the 28 states of the democratic Republic of India. Assam is at 14th position in life expectancy and 8th in female-to-male sex ratio. Assam is the 21st most media exposed states in India. The Economy of Assam is largely agriculture based with 69% of the population engaged in it. Growth rate of Assam's income has not kept pace with that of India's during the Post-British Era; differences increased rapidly since the 1970s. While the Indian economy grew at 6 percent per annum over the period of 1981 to 2000, the same of Assam's grew only by 3.3 percent.

Pushpalata Das (1915–2003) was an Indian independence activist, social worker, Gandhian and legislator from the north-east Indian state of Assam. She was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1951 to 1961, a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly and a member of the working committee of the Indian National Congress. She served as the chairperson of the Assam chapters of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and Khadi and Village Industries Commission. The Government of India awarded her the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1999, for her contributions to society.

Lakhimpur Telahi Kamalabaria College, also known as L.T.K. College, established in 1977, is a general degree college situated at Azad, in Lakhimpur district, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Dibrugarh University.

Kherajkhat College, established in 1982, is a general degree college situated at Deotola, in Lakhimpur district, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Dibrugarh University.

Brahmaputra Degree College, established in 1993, is a general degree college situated at Bokulguri, in Lakhimpur district, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Dibrugarh University.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tirtheswar Hazarika</span> Indian activist

Tirtheswar Hazarika was a freedom fighter, lawyer and Gandhian activist from North Lakhimpur in the Northeast Indian state of Assam. As a follower of Gandhi and a leader of the Indian National Congress, he participated in several movements associated with India's struggle for independence that were initiated or promoted by the Congress, such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, Quit India Movement and the Swadeshi Movement. He led the movement in the greater Lakhimpur region of Assam that included, in addition to the present-day territory of Lakhimpur, other regions, such as Dibrugarh and Dhemaji. He faced action from the British Indian government in the form of imprisonment, seizure of property and violence.
