Gurucharan University formally known as Gurucharan College, [2] is a state university located at Silchar, Assam, India. It was established as a state, public, co-educational higher education institution in 1935. [3] [4] [5] It offers Intermediate (10+2 level) and 4 year undergraduate degree courses in Arts, Commerce and Science. The college is affiliated to Assam Higher Secondary Education Council [6] and Assam University and has 25 departments. [7] [8] [5]
The college also hosts study centres of Indira Gandhi National Open University [9] and Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University. [10] The college was upgraded to a university by Government of Assam by the Gurucharan University Act 2023.
The college was established on 15 July 1935 and was initially located at the bungalow of Pramode Charan Dutta situated at the riverbank of Barak. [3] Due to riverbank erosion, it was temporarily shifted to the campus of the Silchar Normal School and subsequently to the present site. [4]
Initially, the college had been affiliated to Calcutta University. In 1949, the college got affiliated to the Gauhati University. With the establishment of the Assam University (Central), Silchar, G.C. College has been affiliated to it since 1994. [3]
In 2022, the State Government of Assam decided to convert the college to state public university [2] and in September 2023, a bill was passed in the state legislature confirming the status. [11] Subsequently, Prof. Niranjan Roy has been appointed as the first Vice Chancellor. [12]
The college has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" grade. [13] [3]
The college is located near the Ambicapatty area of Silchar and has a campus spread over 8 acres. [14]
