Ramechhap Airport( IATA : RHP, ICAO : VNRC) is a domestic airport serving the municipality of Manthali, [1] the district headquarters of Ramechhap District located in the Tamakoshi River valley in Bagmati Province in Nepal. As of October 2022, most flights to Lukla Airport are operated from Ramechhap Airport.

History

The airport was opened in October 1979. [2] In 2015, the airport was closed for 13 months to allow runway renovations and upgrade from a clay and grass surface to asphalt, reopening in August 2016. [3]

In 2019, as the sole runway of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu was being renovated and the airport was closed over night, all flights to Lukla were operated from Ramechhap Airport, the closest airport to Kathmandu, as these flights need to take off early in the morning to not get caught in dangerous winds in Lukla. [4] [5] [6] During peak, the airport served 24 flights per day, [7] However, the airport had serious problems handling the mass of tourists traveling to Lukla. [8] Following this, plans were developed to upgrade the airport. [9] By 2020[ when? ], flights to Lukla were operated from Kathmandu again,[ citation needed ] and with Tara Air's discontinuation of the flight to Kathmandu, the airport was left without scheduled operations. [10]

In 2022, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal decided that flight to Lukla were to be operated from Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu again. [11] Despite this being the second instance, critics argued that the airport and its surrounding infrastructure was still not sufficiently developed. [12]

Facilities

The airport is at an elevation of 1,555 feet (474 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway which is 530 metres (1,739 ft) in length. [1] The runway is 20 m wide in breadth and build of Asphalt Concrete. Parking capacity of Manthali airport is 4, D228 Type Aircraft. [13]

The airport is located near Feeder Road 32. It is connected to Kathmandu via BP Highway.

The airline received the first of two Let 410 aircraft, financed by the Czech Republic Export Bank., in October 2014, and initially only used them on flights to Lukla and Jomsom.

Manang Air Pvt. Ltd. is a helicopter airline based in Kathmandu, Nepal and was founded in 1997 and has been operating helicopters in commercial air transportation within the Nepalese territory under the Regulation of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal. The company provides chartered services and is focused on personalized services such as adventure flights helicopter excursions or expedition work. It is the only Approved Training Organization in Nepal.

On 27 May 2017, a Let L-410 Turbolet operating as Goma Air Flight 409 crashed short of the runway whilst attempting to land at Tenzing–Hillary Airport in Nepal. It was on final approach when the aircraft hit trees short of the runway and subsequently slid down a slope before coming to rest about 200 metres (656 ft) below runway level and 40 metres (131 ft) short of the runway. The captain and the first officer died as a result of the accident, while another crew member received injuries.

US-Bangla Airlines Flight 211 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, that crashed on 12 March 2018 while landing, killing 51 of the 71 people aboard. The aircraft, a 76-seat Bombardier Q400 operated by US-Bangla Airlines, burst into flames after the crash. The 20 surviving passengers were seriously injured from the impact and the fire. It remains the deadliest aviation disaster involving a Bangladeshi airline, and the deadliest incident involving the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400.

Sukilumba Airport, also known as Ilam Airport, is a domestic airport located in Ilam serving Ilam District, a district in Koshi Province in Nepal. Flight time from Kathmandu to Sukilumba Airport is about one hour.
