"Really Love" is a song performed by American neo soul singer D'Angelo (officially credited to D'Angelo and the Vanguard), [2] issued as the first single from his third studio album Black Messiah . It was his first single since 2008's "I Found My Smile Again". The song was written by D'Angelo (credited under his real name, Michael Archer) along with Vanguard member Kendra Foster; the Spanish spoken-word segment was written and performed by Gina Figueroa. [2] [3] It contains a sample of "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" by Curtis Mayfield. [4] The song was produced by D'Angelo. The string section heard during the intro was arranged and conducted by Brent Fischer. [5]

Contents

"Really Love" peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard R&B chart in 2015. [6] It was also nominated for Record of the Year, and won Best R&B Song at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, held on 16 February 2016.

Background

Much of the song was completed as early as 2007, when Questlove leaked snippets of the track to Australian radio station Triple J. [7] [8] [9] The song was completed and released in December 2014, [1] with D'Angelo handling the production himself. [3]

Critical reception

"Really Love" has received universal acclaim from critics. Walter Biggins of Glide magazine praised the song's lyrics and production as well as D'Angelo's vocals, which Biggins referred to as "what [listeners have] been missing for 14 years". [10] Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker referred to it as "a slow-burning song"; [11] while Jon Pareles and Jon Carmanica of The New York Times complimented the song's "responsive string arrangement behind its declaration of affection". [12]

Live performances

D'Angelo performed "Really Love" live for the first time at the House of Blues on July 4, 2012, two years before its official release. [13] On January 31, 2015, he performed the song on Saturday Night Live . [1] [14]

No official music video was created for the song; however, an official video featuring the song's audio became available in December 2014. [15]

Neo soul is a genre of popular music. She rose to fame in the late 1970s as member of the hip hop trio The Sequence. Soon after, Stone began working with futuristic rap group Mantronix and singer Lenny Kravitz. In the early 1990s, she became a member of the R&B trio Vertical Hold. In 1999, Stone released her solo debut Black Diamond on Arista Records, which was certified gold and spawned the R&B number-one hit "No More Rain ". Black Messiah is the third studio album by American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist D'Angelo, credited to D'Angelo and the Vanguard. It was released on December 15, 2014, through RCA Records, bringing an end to D'Angelo's 14-year hiatus following his 2000 album Voodoo. The album was produced and mostly written by D'Angelo, who collaborated with musicians including percussionist Questlove, bassist Pino Palladino, guitarist Isaiah Sharkey, and horn player Roy Hargrove. He pursued a largely analog and murky funk sound for the record, lending it comparisons to the 1971 Sly & the Family Stone album There's a Riot Goin' On.

"Unshaken" is a song by American singer-songwriter D'Angelo. It was produced by Daniel Lanois, who wrote the track with D'Angelo and Rocco DeLuca. The song was written for the original soundtrack to the 2018 video game Red Dead Redemption 2. It was released as a digital single through RCA Records on January 4, 2019, and later as part of the game's soundtrack released by Lakeshore Records and Rockstar Games. It was D'Angelo's first piece of new music released since his third studio album, Black Messiah, released in December 2014.
