The Regional Rail Revival is a joint initiative between the Australian federal government and the Victorian state government to upgrade all regional railway lines in Victoria. The project has an estimated total cost of A$4 billion. [1] A$2.3 billion of the project's total cost is being funded by the Australian Government. [2] It was delivered by Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) until April 2024, and then by the Level Crossing Removal Project. [3] The project is guided by the 2016 Regional Network Development Plan, which outlines the short, medium and long-term priorities for a modernised regional rail network. [4]

It also provides coach bus services across Victoria and into New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. In addition, V/Line is responsible for the maintenance of the Victorian freight and passenger rail network outside of the areas managed by Metro Trains Melbourne and the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

The line runs from Southern Cross station in central Melbourne to Warrnambool station in the south-west, serving 21 stations via Wyndham Vale, Geelong, Waurn Ponds, and Colac. The line has five return services each weekday and three return services on weekends. Trains on the Warrnambool service run with three- to five-car N-class carriage sets, which are hauled by N class locomotives.

The V/Line VLocity, sometimes called the VLocity 160, is a diesel multiple unit train built by Bombardier Transportation and later Alstom in Dandenong for V/Line, the regional rail operator in the Australian state of Victoria. Continuously in production since 2003, the VLocity is the highest-speed train in the V/Line fleet, with a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). As of August 2024 with set 119 entering service, 118 3-car sets are in revenue service, one collision damaged set is in storage, and 22 more are under construction on the current confirmed orders.

The Deniliquin railway line is a broad-gauge railway line serving north-western Victoria, Australia. The line runs from the New South Wales town of Deniliquin into Bendigo, before turning south-south-east towards Melbourne, terminating in Docklands near the central business district. It is a major trunk line both for passenger and freight trains, with many lines branching off from it.

This closed section of line has been converted into the 37 km long Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail. The line continues to see both passenger and freight services today.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rail Projects Victoria</span> Government agency

Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) was a project team of the Government of Victoria, Australia, responsible for the management of certain major infrastructure projects on the Victorian rail network, such as Metro Tunnel, Regional Rail Revival and Melbourne Airport Rail. Originally established as the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA), to deliver the Melbourne Metro Rail Project, the office was later expanded in its responsibilities to include the management and planning of a number of major infrastructure programs on V/Line's regional rail services. In January 2019, it was renamed to RPV to reflect its expanded scope. It also ceased to be an independent office and became a project team within the Department of Transport and Planning's Major Transport Infrastructure Authority (MITA).
