The Renew America Movement (RAM) was an American political group founded in 2021 by former staffers from Republican Party administrations, with the intention of working to reduce political polarization in the United States. In 2022 it merged with the Serve America Movement, and the Forward Party, to form a political party under the Forward Party name, which was launched on September 24, 2022.

History

The Renew America Movement founding was led by former Department of Homeland Security official Miles Taylor, who served under former President Donald Trump. Their stated goals were to unite Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters "...who have the courage to stand up against political extremists across the country", [1] for a reduction of political polarization in the United States. [2]

Founding members of the group also included Republicans George Conway, [3] Anthony Scaramucci, [3] 2016 presidential candidate Evan McMullin, [3] former Governor of Massachusetts William Weld, former Governor of Pennsylvania and former head of the Department of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, [3] former Governor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman. [4] [5] Democratic Party founding members include US House of Representatives members Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. [3]

In October 2021, the group released a list of 13 Republican members of Congress that they planned to run against in the 2022 midterm elections. The Congress members on the list had all voted to overturn the 2020 presidential election results on January 6, and had also voted against impeaching former President Trump following the January 6 United States Capitol attack. [6] These included Utah Representative Burgess Owens and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, [6] Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Dan Bishop of North Carolina, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. [7]

In February 2022, the group publicly condemned the Republican National Committee's decision to censure Republican US Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for their participation in the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. [8]

In July 2022, RAM announced that they were merging with the Serve America Movement, and the Forward Party, to form a political party under the Forward Party name, [9] [10] [11] which was launched on September 24, 2022, at a convention in Houston, Texas. [12] [13]

She represented Wyoming's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, and served as chair of the House Republican Conference—the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership—from 2019 to 2021. Cheney is known for her vocal opposition to former president Donald Trump. As of March 2023, she is a professor of practice at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

The Republican Party in the United States includes several factions, or wings. During the 19th century, Republican factions included the Half-Breeds, who supported civil service reform; the Radical Republicans, who advocated the immediate and total abolition of slavery, and later advocated civil rights for freed slaves during the Reconstruction era; and the Stalwarts, who supported machine politics.

Censure is a formal, public, group condemnation of an individual, often a group member, whose actions run counter to the group's acceptable standards for individual behavior. In the United States, governmental censure is done when a body's members wish to publicly reprimand the president of the United States, a member of Congress, a judge or a cabinet member. It is a formal statement of disapproval. It relies on the target's sense of shame or their constituents' subsequent disapproval, without which it has little practical effect when done on members of Congress and no practical effect when done on the president.

From January 29 to June 4, 1996, voters of the Republican Party chose its nominee for president in the 1996 United States presidential election. Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, the former Senate majority leader, was selected as the nominee through a series of primary elections and caucuses culminating in the 1996 Republican National Convention held from August 12 to 15, 1996, in San Diego, California. Dole resigned from the Senate in June 1996 once he became the presumptive nominee to concentrate on his presidential campaign. He chose Jack Kemp as his running mate.

The Republican Leadership Council was founded in 1993 as the Committee for Responsible Government. It was a United States political advocacy group and political action committee that promoted Republican candidates who choose a platform that the organization characterized as "fiscally conservative, socially inclusive." Issues championed by the RLC include small government, lower taxes, balanced budgets, environmental protection and school choice, often including school vouchers.

Adam Daniel Kinzinger is an American politician, senior political commentator for CNN, and lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard. He served as a United States representative from Illinois from 2011 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Kinzinger originally represented Illinois's 11th congressional district and later Illinois's 16th congressional district.

The America First Political Action Conference is an annual white nationalist and far-right political conference. Many attendees are supporters of the "America First" show, and support its creator Nick Fuentes, also known as Groypers. The conference was described by The Daily Dot as a "white nationalist alternative" to CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference. The Arizona Republic has characterized it as an extremist rival of CPAC.

The Forward Party, also known simply as Forward (FWD), is a centrist political party in the United States. The party, founded by former Democratic 2020 presidential and 2021 New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, describes its goals as the reduction of partisan polarization and the implementing of electoral reforms. As of early 2024, Forward has ballot access in the states of Colorado, Florida, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. It is looking to achieve ballot access in all 50 states by the end of 2024 or early 2025. The party seeks federal recognition by 2028.

In politics, a purity test is a rigid standard on a specific issue by which a politician or other figure is compared. Purity tests are established to ensure that the subject maintains ideological purity with the ideas supported by a particular group, often a political party or one specific faction of a party. Purity tests are often used in the form of strict in-group and out-group boundaries, where failure of purity tests indicates membership of an out-group. When used in this fashion, purity tests are a form of no true Scotsman fallacy. Purity tests are similar to the concept of litmus tests that are used in political nominations and appointments.
