Restaurant Nathan Outlaw is a two Michelin star restaurant owned and operated by Nathan Outlaw. It has previously been located in Marina Villa Hotel in Fowey, Cornwall, and in the St Enodoc Hotel in Rock, Cornwall. In March 2015 the restaurant relocated to Port Isaac, Cornwall and retained its two Michelin stars upon review.

Description

The restaurant was located at the Marina Villa Hotel in Fowey, Cornwall, between 2007 and November 2009. Outlaw closed the restaurant at the location as the hotel went on the market after the owner signalled his intention to retire from the business. [1] Restaurant Nathan Outlaw relocated to the St Enodoc Hotel in Rock, Cornwall, in February 2010. It became the second Nathan Outlaw restaurant at the hotel, joining the previously opened Nathan Outlaw Seafood and Grill. Outlaw brought over most of the staff from the restaurant's previous location. [2]

At the National Restaurant Awards in 2010 where it was ranked eleventh, it was also awarded the Restaurateur's Choice award. [3] Following the restaurant being awarded its second Michelin star in 2010, the turnover rose by 30% in the following year. Also in 2011, the restaurant was ranked in fifth place by the Good Food Guide. [4] The Guide also awarded the restaurant the title of Best Fish Restaurant 2011. [5]

The restaurant currently has two Michelin stars, and four AA rosettes. [6] It is the only seafood restaurant in the UK to hold a Michelin star. [7]

Reception

While the restaurant was located in the Marina Villa at Fowey, Matthew Fort reviewed the restaurant for The Guardian. He was positive of the entire experience, despite visiting on a day in which Outlaw was not in the kitchen. It was the first time the critic had tried wreckfish, and described it as "beautifully cooked and hugely satisfying", while the pudding was "damned fine". [8] Harper's Bazaar described the cooking as "precise and flavourful", and the restaurant as " chic and decidedly un-seasidey" despite its location on the Fowey Estuary. [9] Zoe Williams visited the restaurant for The Daily Telegraph, but found the experience disappointing, with the main courses suffering from a number of problems. The restaurant was given a score of five out of ten. [10]

Harden's restaurant guide rating system (where 1 is high and 5 is low) has rated the food as 1, and the service and ambience both as 3. The restaurant itself is described as "small and very intimate", and Outlaw's cooking as "genius". [11] Celebrity chef James Martin recommended the restaurant while acting as guest editor for At Home magazine. [5]

James Nathan is a barrister best known as the winner of the BBC's MasterChef 2008, having beaten Emily Ludolf and Jonny Stevenson in the grand final.

Martin Lauris Blunos is a British TV chef. Blunos earned two Michelin Guide stars at his restaurant Lettonie, first in Bristol and then in Bath.

The Whitebrook, formerly known as The Crown at Whitebrook, is a restaurant with rooms in Whitebrook, 6 miles (9.7 km) south-south-east of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales, near the River Wye and the border with England. The building is thought to date from the 17th century and by the 19th century it was used as a roadside inn. Its restaurant was run by Chef Patron James Sommerin until 2013; it gained a Michelin star in 2007. It contains eight double rooms and a 2-acre (0.81 ha) garden. On 7 March 2013, it closed because of financial difficulties; at the time it had the longest held Michelin star in Wales. Critics praised the food under Sommerin, but have criticised the difficulty in finding the restaurant. It re-opened in October 2013 under new chef and owner Chris Harrod, and regained the Michelin star in 2014. Harrod serves a menu using locally produced meat and vegetables along with foraged ingredients such as charlock, hedge bedstraw and pennywort.

Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's was a restaurant owned by Gordon Ramsay and located with Claridge's hotel in Mayfair, London. Blackstone Group had enquired about Ramsay's availability to open a restaurant after he was awarded three Michelin Stars at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. It marked the first of a number of restaurants that Ramsay would open at hotels owned by Blackstone. It opened in 2001, and by the fourth year was making a profit of £2 million a year. Mark Sargeant was the chef de cuisine of the restaurant until 2008, during which time the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star.

Paul Ainsworth is an English chef from Southampton, England. He is chef-patron at Paul Ainsworth at Number 6 in Padstow, Cornwall which was awarded a Michelin star in 2013 and has four AA Rosettes. After studying at catering college, Ainsworth worked for Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing.

Tom Brown is a British chef who was a finalist on the Great British Menu (2018). He now owns and is in charge of his own restaurant, Cornerstone in Hackney Wick.

Philip Howard is a South African-British chef, chef patron, and restaurateur. He gained cooking skills while working under Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Simon Hopkinson at Bibendum. Howard and White's then-business partner Nigel Platts-Martin opened London restaurant The Square in December 1991, despite both of their inexperience in operating a restaurant at the time.

The Square was a London fine dining restaurant, opened on 13 December 1991 in St James's. Since its opening, it had been co-owned by chef Phil Howard and wine expert Nigel Platts-Martin. It also earned its first Michelin star in 1994 and retained it from then on. After relocating to Mayfair in February 1997, The Square won a second Michelin star in 1998, which it retained until 2016, the same year when Howard and Platts-Martin sold the restaurant to a company held by Marlon Abela. It regained its first Michelin star in 2017. It closed on 31 January 2020, causing the restaurant to lose its star the following year.
