Robert Taylor Jones (February 8,1884 –June 11,1958) was an American businessman and politician who served as the sixth governor of the U.S. state of Arizona and served from 1939 to 1941.
He was born in Rutledge,Tennessee,to Samuel Joseph and Sara Elizabeth (Legg) Jones. His father was an American Civil War veteran from the Union side who was active in politics and in the affairs of his community. [1]
Jones was educated in the Tennessee public schools,He began his career as a self-taught practical engineer,while still in his teens. He was involved in the building of a railroad through eastern Tennessee. The experience which he obtained was to his benefit when he went into business for himself as a small contractor. He participated in the construction of the Panama Canal for one year as a civil engineer. [1]
When Jones returned to the United States,he went to live in Los Angeles. Later he became involved in the construction of a railroad from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City. [1]
In 1909,he came to the territory of Arizona and worked with the Globe and Gila Valley railroad. That year Jones met Elon Armstrong of Winkelman,Arizona,daughter of W. T. Armstrong,a pioneer Arizona cattleman and a one-time sheriff of Gila County. They were married in 1911 and purchased a house at 300 Main Street,in the town of Superior where they settled down. The couple had two children:Kathryn and Albert Claude. [1]
Also in 1911,he founded the “Jones Drug Company”,a pharmacy which eventually became a chain of pharmacies with branches in Phoenix,Florence,Mesa,and Tucson. [1]
On January 2,1939,Jones became the 6th Governor of Arizona. He served as governor for one year until January 6,1941,as a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to his becoming governor,Jones served as a State Senator from Maricopa County in the 13th Arizona State Legislature during 1937–1938. [2] He also served two terms in the State Senate as the lone senator from Pinal County in the 10th and 11th Arizona State Legislatures. [3] [4]
Jones returned to his drug store business,however in 1953,he left the drug store business and started the Jones Western Wear store in Phoenix at 101 E. Washington,where his Phoenix pharmacy used to be. He also owned a cattle ranch near Chandler. [1]
He died on June 11,1958,in Phoenix,Arizona and is buried in Greenwood/Memory Lawn Mortuary &Cemetery in Phoenix. [1]
His house in Superior was converted into the Bob Jones Museum in March 1994. The displays in the museum are focused on local artifacts and include exhibits of photographs,mining equipment and geological samples. [1]
George Wylie Paul Hunt was an American politician and businessman. He was the first governor of Arizona,serving a total of seven terms,along with President of the convention that wrote Arizona's constitution. In addition,Hunt served in both houses of the Arizona Territorial Legislature and was posted as U.S. Minister to Siam by Woodrow Wilson.

Ralph Henry Cameron was an American businessman,prospector and politician who served as both Arizona Territory's Delegate to Congress and as an Arizona United States Senator. As a Territorial delegate,he saw Arizona achieve statehood in 1912. Cameron's greatest achievement in the US Senate was authorization for the Coolidge Dam.
In the 1912–13 United States Senate elections,Democrats gained control of the Senate from the Republicans. Of the 32 seats up for election,17 were won by Democrats,thereby gaining 4 seats from the Republicans. Two seats were unfilled by state legislators who failed to elect a new senator on time. They were the last Senate elections held before ratification of the 17th Amendment,which established direct elections for all seats in the Senate.
Richard Elihu Sloan was an American jurist and politician,who served as Associate Justice of the Arizona Territorial Supreme Court,a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona and as the 17th and final Governor of Arizona Territory. As an Associate Justice he served for 16 years,the longest service of any member of the Arizona Territorial Supreme Court,and wrote over 150 legal opinions. As Governor he oversaw Arizona's transition from territory to statehood.
Frederick Augustus Tritle was an American politician,businessman,and attorney. He served as the sixth Governor of Arizona Territory and held a number of lesser government positions there and in Nevada. He presented the silver spike used at the Promontory Point was held ceremony in May 1869. Tritle was the first governor to have visited Arizona before his appointment and also the first governor to make the territory his lifelong home.
The 15th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly was a session of the Arizona Territorial Legislature which began on January 21,1889,in Prescott,Arizona,moved to Phoenix on February 7 and did not adjourn till April 11. The session is known as the "Hold-over Legislature" due to the Republican majority extending the length of the session past the sixty-day limit prescribed by law.

Prosper Powell Parker was a Canadian-born American engineer and politician. During the American Civil War he served as a junior officer under General William T. Sherman,rising to the rank of captain. Following the war he served on the committee that organized Towner County,North Dakota before moving to Arizona Territory. In Arizona he was twice elected to the territorial legislature and became Speaker of the House during the 21st Arizona Territorial Legislature.
The 25th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly was the final session of the Arizona Territorial Legislature. The session convened in Phoenix,Arizona,and ran from January 18 till March 18,1909. Its actions include the creation of Greenlee County,establishing the Arizona Pioneers' Home,and requiring primary elections.
The 9th Arizona State Legislature,consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives,was constituted from January 1,1929,to December 31,1930,during the first and second years of John Calhoun Phillips's tenure as Governor of Arizona,in Phoenix. The number of senators remained constant at 19,while the number of representatives increased from 52 to 54. The Democrats held large majorities in both houses,although the Republicans made significant inroads in the House.
The 10th Arizona State Legislature,consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives,was constituted from January 1,1931,to December 31,1932,during the first and second years of George W. P. Hunt's seventh tenure as Governor of Arizona,in Phoenix. The number of senators remained constant at 19,while the number of representatives increased from 54 to 63. The Democrats increased the large majorities they held in both houses.
The 1st Arizona State Legislature,consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives,was constituted from February 14,1912 to December 31,1914,during the first term of George Wylle Paul Hunt as Governor of Arizona,in Phoenix. The legislature was heavily skewed towards the Democrats,with their holding a 15–4 lead in the senate,and a 31–4 lead in the Arizona House of Representatives The number of senators and representatives was set by the State Constitution,with 9 counties being granted one Senator,while the other 5 were granted two. Representation in the house was also by county,apportioned by population,with each county being guaranteed a minimum of 1 Representation.
The 12th Arizona State Legislature,consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives,was constituted from January 1,1935,to December 31,1936,during Benjamin Baker Moeur's second term as Governor of Arizona,in Phoenix. The number of senators remained constant,while the number of representatives in the house decreased from 63 to 51. The Republicans broke the Democrats complete domination in the senate,managing to obtain a single seat,that of Apache County,however the house was entirely in Democratic hands.
The 13th Arizona State Legislature,consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives,was constituted in Phoenix from January 1,1937,to December 31,1938,during Rawghlie Clement Stanford's first and only term as Governor of Arizona. The number of senators and representatives remained constant,with 19 and 51 members respectively. While the Democrats regained one hundred percent of the senate seats,the Republicans broke the Democrats complete domination in the house,managing to obtain a single seat,one of the two from Navajo County.
J. F. Hechtman was a politician from Arizona,who served as a senator in the 1st Arizona State Legislature,serving Gila County.
Andrew P. Martin was an Arizona politician who served a single term in the Arizona state senate during the 2nd Arizona State Legislature. He was known as the father of the Arizona National Guard,having organized and led the first company in the territory in 1910. With no formal education in pharmacology,he became a registered pharmacist,and grew his father's single drug store to become the largest drug store chain in Tucson,before selling in 1954. He was also called the father of the University of Arizona College of Pharmacology,having led the drive to establish school. In addition,he saw combat as an artillery soldier during World War I.
Dan P. Jones was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 8th Arizona State Legislature,holding one of the two seats from Maricopa County. Prior to that he had served three terms in the Arizona House of Representatives,during the 1st,5th,and 6th Arizona State Legislatures. During the 6th Legislature,he was elected Speaker of the House. He was also very involved in the education system in Mesa,serving as its board president,as well as in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Everett Hunter McEachren was an American politician from Arizona. He served a four consecutive terms in the Arizona State Senate during the 10th through 13th Arizona State Legislatures,holding one of the two seats from Gila County. He had served a portion of the 9th Arizona State Legislature,having been appointed to serve the unexpired term of John R. Lyons,who had died in office in November 1929.
