The Australia men's national cricket team represents Australia in men's international cricket. As the joint oldest team in Test cricket history,playing in the first ever Test match in 1877,the team also plays One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket,participating in both the first ODI,against England in the 1970–71 season and the first T20I,against New Zealand in the 2004–05 season,winning both games. The team draws its players from teams playing in the Australian domestic competitions –the Sheffield Shield,the Australian domestic limited-overs cricket tournament and the Big Bash League. Australia are the current ICC World Test Championship and ICC Cricket World Cup champions. They are regarded as one of the most successful cricket teams in the history of Cricket
An all-rounder is a cricketer who regularly performs well at both batting and bowling. Although all bowlers must bat and quite a handful of batsmen do bowl occasionally,most players are skilled in only one of the two disciplines and are considered specialists. Some wicket-keepers have the skills of a specialist batter and have been referred to as all-rounders,but the term wicket-keeper-batter is more commonly applied to them,even if they are substitute wicket keepers who also bowl.
Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards is an Antiguan retired cricketer who represented the West Indies cricket team between 1974 and 1991. Batting generally at number three in a dominant West Indies side,Richards is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Richards helped win his team the 1979 Cricket World Cup.
David Clarence Boon is an Australian cricket match referee,former cricket commentator and international cricketer whose international playing career spanned the years 1984–1996. A right-handed batsman and a very occasional off-spin bowler,he played first-class cricket for both his home state Tasmania and English county side Durham. Boon was a part of the Australian team that won their first world title during the 1987 Cricket World Cup.
The captain of a cricket team,often referred to as the skipper,is the appointed leader,having several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of the other players. As in other sports,the captain is usually experienced and has good communication skills,and is likely to be one of the most regular members of the team,as the captain is responsible for the team selection. Before the game the captains toss for innings. During the match the captain decides the team's batting order,who will bowl each over,and where each fielder will be positioned. While the captain has the final say,decisions are often collaborative. A captain's knowledge of the complexities of cricket strategy and tactics,and shrewdness in the field,may contribute significantly to the team's success.
Hit wicket is a method of dismissal in the sport of cricket. This method of dismissal is governed by Law 35 of the Laws of Cricket. The striker is out "hit wicket" if,after the bowler has entered his delivery stride and while the ball is in play,his wicket is put down by his bat or his person. The striker may do this whilst preparing to receive or receiving a delivery or in setting off for his first run after playing the delivery. In simple language,if the striking batsman knocks the bails off the stumps or uproots the stumps,while attempting to hit the ball or take off for a run,he is out hit wicket.
The Ball of the Century,also referred to as the Gatting Ball or simply That Ball,is a cricket delivery bowled by Australian spin bowler Shane Warne to English batter Mike Gatting on 4 June 1993,the second day of the first Test of the 1993 Ashes series,at Old Trafford in Manchester. With his first ball against England,in his first Ashes Test,Warne produced a spectacular delivery that bowled Gatting out. It became recognised as being of significance not just in the context of the match,but more generally in signalling a revival of leg spin bowling.
Ottis Delroy Gibson is a Barbadian cricket coach and former cricketer who played for the West Indies cricket team. From 2010 to 2014,Gibson was the head coach for the West Indies,where he led the team to be champions of the 2012 T20 World Cup. He has been appointed as Bangladesh bowling head coach and previously twice worked as bowling coach for England,from 2007 to 2010 and again from 2015 to 2017. Gibson also coached the South African cricket team from 2017 to 2019. He is currently the pace bowling coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team and Multan Sultans. In January 2022 Gibson was appointed the head coach of Yorkshire County Cricket Club,he is set to join the team after the conclusion of the 2022 Pakistan Super League season.
Douglas Thomas Ring was an Australian cricketer who played for Victoria and for Australia in 13 Test matches between 1948 and 1953. In 129 first-class cricket matches,he took 426 wickets bowling leg spin,and he had a top score of 145 runs,which was the only century of his career.
The West Indian cricket team toured England from 13 May to 3 September 1995 as part of the 1995 English cricket season. The tour included six Tests and three One Day Internationals. The Test series was drawn 2–2 while the ODI series finished 2–1 to England. The first ODI match of the series was the 1,000th ODI to be played.
The West Indian cricket team in England in 1991 played three one day internationals and five Tests,under the captaincy of Viv Richards,as part of an extensive tour in which they also played first-class matches against 11 first-class county teams,the combined Minor Counties,the Combined Universities of Oxford and Cambridge,and a World XI to finish,plus 55-over one-day matches against one more first-class county (Gloucestershire) and the Duchess of Norfolk's Invitation XI. Of the non-international matches,West Indies defeated Kent,Middlesex and Leicestershire in the longer matches,and Gloucestershire over 55 overs,and lost only the opening match against the Duchess of Norfolk's XI:all the other matches were drawn,although some were close to a finish. England,by contrast with the previous disastrous tour of 1988,were a far more settled side,and gave a far better account of themselves under the captaincy of Graham Gooch.
In 1984 the West Indies cricket team toured England,playing three One Day Internationals and five Tests. West Indies beat England 2–1 in the ODI series,then whitewashed England 5–0 in the Test series,and as of 2023 this was the only instance England faced such whitewash at home. This was the only test series where the home side lost all tests of a 4 or more match series. The West Indies team was captained by Clive Lloyd throughout,and England by David Gower.
The New Zealand cricket team toured England in the 1949 season. The team was the fourth official touring side from New Zealand,following those in 1927,1931 and 1937,and was by some distance the most successful to this date. The four-match Test series with England was shared,every game ending as a draw,and of 35 first-class fixtures,14 were won,20 drawn and only one lost.
The West Indian cricket team in England in 1973 played 17 first-class matches including three Tests. The team won the series against England by two matches to nil,with one drawn game. It also won the Prudential Trophy for the one-day series.
The West Indian cricket team toured England in 1976,spending virtually the whole of the 1976 English cricket season in England. West Indies also played one match in Ireland in July.
The 1965-66 Australians drew 1-1 with the touring England team in the 1965-66 Ashes series. They were strong in batting,but weak in bowling and by the end of the series had seven batsmen,an all-rounder,a wicket-keeper and only two specialist bowlers in the team,with the batsman helping out with their part-time bowling skills.
The India national cricket team toured the West Indies during the 1975–76 cricket season. They played four Test matches against the West Indian cricket team,with the West Indies winning the series 2–1.
The England national cricket team toured the West Indies from February to April 1986 and played a five-match Test series against the West Indies cricket team which the West Indies won 5–0. England were captained by David Gower;the West Indies by Viv Richards. In addition,the teams played a four-match One Day International (ODI) series which the West Indies won 3–1.
