The SS Belgic was a steam ship built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line for service in the Far East and across the Pacific. Sold to the Atlantic Transport Line in 1899 she was transferred to the North Atlantic. After service as a Boer War transport she was scrapped in 1903.
Belgic was a steel-hulled ship divided by watertight bulkheads into 8 separate compartments. In addition to her engines she had four masts with the first pair being square rigged. Her main propulsion was provided by two double cylindered engines of 400 NHP, also built by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, the steam for which was supplied from three coal-fired elliptical boilers, working at a pressure of 90 psi. In the event of one engine failing it could be disconnected from the propeller shaft enabling the vessel to continue at reduced power. She carried eight lifeboats as well as two life rafts. [1]
The comfort of passengers on board was enhanced by the provision of electric light and a refrigerated compartment enabling fresh meat to be served on the voyage. [2]
Belgic was launched on 3 January 1885 and completed on 7 July the same year. On completion she was chartered to the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company for service in the Far East and Pacific. As a positioning move her maiden voyage was utilised to take 590 emigrants to Australia, leaving London on 30 July, under the command of Captain William Henry Walker, and arriving in Sydney on 12 September. [1] She then took up her intended services connecting Yokohama, San Francisco and Hong Kong.
On 26 May 1894 she was rammed by Blue Funnel's Ulysses while loading tea in Amoy Harbour. No damage was caused to either ship. A year later, on 9 May 1895, she went aground in Sateyama Bay, Japan but was refloated. In 1898 she returned to Britain. [3]
In 1899 she was sold to the Atlantic Transport Line who renamed her Mohawk. After refitting she was then used on the North Atlantic, sailing between London and New York City from September 1900. In December 1900 Mohawk was requisitioned as a transport for Boer War service. She was returned to her owners in 1902 but the decision was taken not to refurbish her and she was scrapped by Garston at Liverpool in 1903. [3]
The White Star Line was a British shipping line. Founded out of the remains of a defunct packet company, it gradually rose up to become one of the most prominent shipping companies in the world, providing passenger and cargo services between the British Empire and the United States. While many other shipping lines focused primarily on speed, White Star branded their services by focusing more on providing comfortable passages for both upper class travellers and immigrants.
Oceanic was the White Star Line's first liner and first member of the Oceanic-class; she was an important turning point in passenger liner design. Entering service in 1871 for Atlantic crossings, she was later chartered to Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company (O&O) in 1875. The ship provided passenger service for O&O in the Pacific until 1895 when she was sold for scrap.
RMS Gaelic was a passenger and cargo liner built for the White Star Line. She transported the first 102 Korean immigrants to the United States. Sold in 1905 for further service in the Pacific, she was scrapped in 1907.
SS Britannic was an ocean liner of the White Star Line. It was the first of three ships of the White Star Line to sail with the Britannic name.

SS Medic was a steamship built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line which entered service in 1899. Medic was one of five Jubilee-class ocean liners built specifically to service the Liverpool–Cape Town–Sydney route. The ship's name pertained to the ancient Persian region of Media and was pronounced Mee-dic.
SS Suevic was a steamship built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line. Suevic was the fifth and last of the Jubilee-class ocean liners, built specifically to service the Liverpool-Cape Town-Sydney route, along with her sister ship Runic. In 1907 she was wrecked off the south coast of England, but in the largest rescue of its kind, all passengers and crew were saved. The ship herself was deliberately broken in two, and a new bow was attached to the salvaged stern portion. Later serving as a Norwegian whaling factory ship carrying the name Skytteren, she was scuttled off the Swedish coast in 1942 to prevent her capture by ships of Nazi Germany.
SS Noordam was a steam ocean liner that was launched in Ireland in 1901 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1928–29. Holland America Line owned her throughout her career. From 1923 to 1924 Swedish American Line chartered her and renamed her Kungsholm.
SS Nomadic was a steamship of the White Star Line. She was laid down in 1891, in yard 236 at Harland and Wolff Shipyards, Belfast, as a livestock carrier and completed on 14 April 1891. She sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 24 April 1891 and spent the next few years on this service. She was requisitioned as a troopship and horse transport in October 1899 and spent the two years of the Boer War on this service, making three trips to the cape under the designation 'HM Transport No. 34'.
SS Persic was an ocean liner of the White Star Line, built by Harland and Wolff in 1899. She was one of the five Jubilee-class ships built specifically to service the Liverpool–Cape Town–Sydney route. The voyage took six weeks.
Coptic was a steamship built in 1881, which was successively owned by the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and the Japanese Oriental Steam Ship Co. before being scrapped in 1926. She was filmed by Thomas Edison in 1897 in one of his early movies. The movie is currently stored in the Library of Congress, archive.org and other internet archives.

The SS American was a steamship built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, which entered service in 1895. the American was a combined cargo and passenger ship which was originally built for the West India and Pacific Steamship Company along with her sister ship the SS European. In 1904 she passed to the White Star Line and was renamed Cufic, the name she retained until she was sold to Italian ownership in 1924, after which she became known as Antartico then Maria Guilia until being scrapped in 1932.

SS Demosthenes was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1911 in Ireland for Aberdeen Line and scrapped in 1931 in England. In the First World War she was an Allied troop ship.
The Teutonic-class ocean liners were a pair of passenger liners named the Teutonic and Majestic. these ship were built by Harland & Wolff shipyard for the White Star Line, specifically for the White Star Line's transatlantic service route. These ships are also renowned as revolutionary for the time, as their main propulsion are propellers instead of square-rigged sails.
SS Norseman was a British cargo liner that was torpedoed by the German submarine SM U-39 in the Mediterranean Sea off Thessaloniki, Greece on 22 January 1916 while on route from Plymouth, United Kingdom to Thessaloniki, Greece, while carrying a varied cargo including about 1,100 mules and munitions. Norseman was subsequently beached at Moudros, Greece, and declared a total loss. She was scrapped in situ in 1920.
