SS Royal Standard was an auxiliary steamship of the White Star Line, built in 1863 by Palmer Brothers & Company in Tyneside with an iron hull. She was launched on 1 August 1863, and completed with a screw steam engine by JP Balmer and Company of Jarrow.
She was fitted with 3 cylindrical boilers, providing 60 lbs pressure to her high pressure inverted steam engine. The small machinery allowed her to carry a greater quantity of cargo, though meant her steam propulsion was slower to other steamships of the time. Her saloon and sleeping berths for saloon class, and second cabin were well ventilated, and lit by oil lamps. Her accommodation was described as 'magnificent' and 'fitted in such a style' that there is 'nothing further to be desired'. She had a single deckhouse running the majority of the ships length, which contained second cabin forward, saloon class aft and also housed the saloon class dining saloon. [1] [2] The iron ship also contained 4 iron bulkheads, which increased the safety of her. [3]
Royal Standard departed on her maiden voyage for the White Star Line on 23 November 1863, departing Liverpool for Melbourne, Australia. During the maiden trip, her captain E.J Allen died and was replaced by G. H Dowell for the rest of the voyage, as well as the return trip. She departed Melbourne on 21 March 1864, on the return trip of her maiden voyage due to return to Liverpool, carrying a cargo of wool and 20,000 ounces of gold. On 4 April 1864, between Melbourne and the Cape Horn, the ship entered a haze around 11AM, then soon dense fog. As the ship was doing 10 knots under wind only, an enormous wall of ice 600 ft (183m) was spotted straight ahead. Dowell put her hard to starboard, and the ship hit the iceberg broadside. The mast tops were damaged badly, as well as the starboard side of the ship. [4] After 45 minutes of struggling, her propeller was re-installed, and she steamed away from the iceberg to Rio de Janeiro for repairs.
The Royal Standard arrived at Rio on 9 May, where she was quickly repaired, and departed with 350 tons of coal on 12 May. She returned to Liverpool on 19 June 1864. She was then put on the transatlantic for one voyage, sailing to New York departing 23 May 1866, where she performed badly due to her slow speed. She departed Liverpool on her last round trip to Melbourne on 27 September 1866.
Due to the collapse of the White Star Line in 1867, the Royal Standard was sold away in 1867 to C.M Palmer of Newcastle [2] Her engine was removed in 1867. converting her to exclusively sail.
She departed from Gravesend on her final voyage on 12 August 1869, with 28 passengers and around 60 crew. On 30 September 1869, in poor weather, her masts were destroyed, and she was put under jury rigging. Additionally, all but one of her four lifeboats had been destroyed. On 10 October 1869 the ship ran onto a sandbank off São Tomé Island. The one lifeboat left the stranded ship around 10:00am with a tin of biscuits, but no water. Upon beaching, the lifeboat tipped and 8 women on board drowned. [5]
The remaining survivors on the Royal Standard were rescued on the 13th by the Brazilian brigantine Camponeza, and the ship soon broke in half with her bow buried under the sand, and her stern sinking deeper. [6]
SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship that was advanced for her time. She was the largest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1853. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–1859), for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York City. While other ships had been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship. She was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic Ocean, which she did in 1845, in 14 days.
SS Great Eastern was an iron sail-powered, paddle wheel and screw-propelled steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by John Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works on the River Thames, London, England. She was by far the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. Her length of 692 feet (211 m) was surpassed only in 1899 by the 705-foot (215 m) 17,274-gross-ton RMS Oceanic, her gross tonnage of 18,915 was only surpassed in 1901 by the 701-foot (214 m) 20,904-gross-ton RMS Celtic and her 4,000-passenger capacity was surpassed in 1913 by the 4,234-passenger SS Imperator. The ship having five funnels was unusual for the time. The vessel also had the largest set of paddle wheels.
SS Oceanic was the White Star Line's first liner and first member of the Oceanic-class; she was an important turning point in passenger liner design. Entering service in 1871 for Atlantic crossings, she was later chartered to Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company (O&O) in 1875. The ship provided passenger service for O&O in the Pacific until 1895 when she was sold for scrap.
Marco Polo was a three-masted wooden clipper ship, launched in 1851 at Saint John, New Brunswick. She was named after Venetian traveler Marco Polo. The ship carried emigrants and passengers to Australia and was the first vessel to make the round trip from Liverpool in under six months. Later in her career, the ship was used as a cargo ship before running aground off Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, in 1883.
The first USS Gettysburg was a steamer in the United States Navy. The ship was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1858, named RMS Douglas, and operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in the United Kingdom between Liverpool, England, and Douglas on the Isle of Man until November 1862. She was then sold to Cunard, Wilson & Company on behalf of the Confederate agents Fraser, Trenholm & Company for use by the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Renamed Margaret and Jessie, she operated as a blockade runner until her capture by the Union on 5 November 1863. The ship then was commissioned into the Union Navy on 2 May 1864 as USS Gettysburg.
SS City of Glasgow of 1850 was a single-screw passenger steamship of the Inman Line, which disappeared en route from Liverpool to Philadelphia in March 1854 with 480 passengers and crew. Based on ideas pioneered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel's SS Great Britain of 1845, City of Glasgow established that Atlantic steamships could be operated profitably without government subsidy. After a refit in 1852, she was also the first Atlantic steamship to carry steerage passengers, representing a significant improvement in the conditions experienced by immigrants. In March 1854 City of Glasgow vanished at sea with no known survivors.
Storstad was a steam cargo ship built in 1910 by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd of Newcastle for A. F. Klaveness & Co of Sandefjord, Norway. The ship was primarily employed as an ore and coal carrier doing tramp trade during her career. In May 1914 she accidentally rammed and sank the ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland, killing over 1,000 people.
SS Britannic was an ocean liner of the White Star Line. She was the first of three ships of the White Star Line to sail with the Britannic name.
RMS Amazon was a wooden three-masted barque, paddle steamer and Royal Mail Ship. She was the first of 5 sister ships commissioned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company to serve RMSP's routes between Southampton and the Caribbean.
The Inman Line was one of the three largest 19th-century British passenger shipping companies on the North Atlantic, along with the White Star Line and Cunard Line. Founded in 1850, it was absorbed in 1893 into American Line. The firm's formal name for much of its history was the Liverpool, Philadelphia and New York Steamship Company, but it was also variously known as the Liverpool and Philadelphia Steamship Company, as Inman Steamship Company, Limited, and, in the last few years before absorption, as the Inman and International Steamship Company.

The America class was the replacement for the Britannia class, the Cunard Line's initial fleet of wooden paddle steamers. Adriatic was a wooden-hulled, side-wheel steamship launched in New York in 1856. She was conceived as the largest, fastest, most luxurious trans-Atlantic passenger liner of her day, the pride of the Collins Line. At the time of her launch she was the largest ship in the world.
