SS Council Bluffs was a 1918-built, 77.1 metres long American cargo steamship. It was built by Great Lakes Engineering Works and owned by United States Shipping Board. During the morning of 13 November 1919, the ship sank by a mine near Terschelling, the Netherlands. The wreck of the ship was found in 1993.
The steel cargo ship was built in 1918 [2] or 1919 [3] by Great Lakes Engineering Works and owned by United States Shipping Board of Detroit. She was 77.1 metres (252 ft 11 in) long and had a width of 13.3 m (43 ft 8 in). She had tonnage of 2450 GRT. She had a 1 x 3-cylinder triple expansion steam engine with a single shaft and 1 screw. She had a speed of 9.5 knots. She had yard number 213 and IMO number: 217512. [2]
On 16 October 1919 she departed from Philadelphia, United States to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. [4] After arriving in Rotterdam, she departed on 12 November 1919 to Hamburg, Germany. From Hamburg she was scheduled to take cargo to the United States. [3]
During the morning of 13 November 1919 at around 8am, she struck a mine near the Dutch coast. She broke into two pieces and sank. The 38 crew memberes were able to get into two lifeboats. After being for three hours in the lifeboats, they were found by Dutch minesweeper Hr.Ms. M1 that was actually in search for lifeboats of the sunken ship Zaan. [1] [5]
The crew members arrived at Nieuwediep at 6pm and were brought to several hotels. [1]
In 1993 the wreck of the ship was found by divers of Terschelling. The two parts of the ship are lying 80 metres apart from each other. The bow was standing upright. Two anchors were still in the lockers that were secured on the forecastle with chain stoppers. The ship was broken behind the anchor lockers. A porthole is still visible. Very little remains of the stern. Recognizable were the rudder quadrant and the rudder stock that protrudes meters above the bottom. Half in the sand two Scottish steam boilers and a large triple-expansion steam engine. In the stern were many refractory boiler bricks marked “Sawyer & Fisher Phoenix No.1.”; “Savage” and “Sawerville”. [6]
Lutine was a frigate which served in both the French Navy and the Royal Navy. She was launched by the French in 1779. The ship passed to British control in 1793 and was taken into service as HMS Lutine. She sank among the West Frisian Islands during a storm in 1799.
SS Soesterberg was a Dutch-owned cargo steamship that was built in Belgium in 1927 and sunk by a U-boat in 1940 in the Battle of the Atlantic.
SS Saint Boswells, also written as SS St. Boswells, was a 463 GRT tug built in 1919 for the British Royal Navy. While towing SS Santa Therasa in June 1920 she struck a naval mine near Terschelling, the Netherlands and sank immediately. 16 people were killed in the disaster. Six people were rescued, one of them was injured.
SS Binnendijk was a Holland America Line (NASM) cargo steamship. She was one of NASM's "B" class ships: the company's first cargo ships to be powered by steam turbines. Binnendijk was built in South Holland in 1921, and sunk by a mine in the English Channel in 1939. She was the first ship that NASM lost in the Second World War. Her wreck off the coast of Dorset, England is now a wreck diving site, nicknamed "The Benny".
SS Stolwijk, a Dutch cargo ship of 2,489 tons, was wrecked off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland on 6 December 1940. She was part of a Convoy SC 13 sailing from the Dominion of Newfoundland to Liverpool, England, when her rudder was damaged in a fierce storm. Attempts to rescue her by her destroyer escort failed and she went on the rocks off Tory Island, County Donegal, Ireland. Ten of her crew were lost but the remaining 18 were rescued the following day by Arranmore Lifeboat and landed safely in Burtonport. The rescue of the survivors was conducted in terrible weather conditions and both the RNLI and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands awarded medals to the Irish lifeboat crew.
The SS Lakeland was an early steel-hulled Great Lakes freighter that sank on December 3, 1924, into 205 feet (62 m) of water on Lake Michigan near Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin, United States, after she sprang a leak. On July 7, 2015, the wreck of the Lakeland was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Rotterdam was a steam ocean liner that was launched and completed in Ireland in 1908, and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1940. Holland America Line (HAL) owned and operated her throughout her career. She was the fourth of seven HAL ships to have been named after the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Until Statendam entered service in 1929, Rotterdam was the largest and swiftest ship in the company's fleet, and was the company's flagship.

SS Anna Paulowna was a 1857 built 63 metres long Dutch steamship. It was owned by Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM) and had hometown Amsterdam.
Lisette was an 1881-built, 50-metre long German three-masted iron schooner. It was owned by Johan Georg Oestman and had hometown Blankenese.
SS Aline Woermann was a 1879 Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik-built 74-metre -long German steamship. It was owned by the Woermann-Linie of Carl Woermann registered at Hamburg, Germany. She was deployed on a scheduled service between Hamburg, Liberia and Cameroon.
SS Katowice, originally named SS Vendemiare, was a 1925-built, 82-metre (269 ft)-long Polish merchant steamship. It was owned by Polish Ocean Lines and was registered in Gdynia.
SS West Arvada was a 1919-built, 124-metre -long American cargo steamship. It was built by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Los Angeles Division and owned by United States Shipping Board. During the night of 15–16 September 1919, the ship sank due to naval mines near Terschelling, the Netherlands. One Polish crew member died.
SS West Aleta was a 142 metre long American Design 1019 cargo steamship with home port San Francisco. She was built in 1919 by Western Pipe and Steel Company, and owned by United States Shipping Board. During a storm on her maiden voyage on 12 February 1920, the ship sank near Terschelling, the Netherlands. All 42 crew members were rescued. The salvage of the ship was difficult and took almost a year.
SS Margariti, originally named SS Wearwood and later also SS Carita and SS Harrow, was a 1930 British built cargo ship of the Constantine Group. It was later owned by British Galbraith, Pembroke & Co., Swedish Manne J. E. and from 1962 by Greek Sigalas & Platis Bros under Lebanese flag. On 18 October 1967 while en route from Gdansk, Poland to Tartous the ship sank near Ameland, the Netherlands, after the ship tilted due to shifting cargo during a gale. All 24 people on board were rescued.
MV Lady Odiel, often written as MV Lady Odile, originally named MV Kalmarsund IX and later also renamed into MV Jomfruland, was a Swedish-built 487 GRT cargo ship in 1957 for Swedish company Angbats A/B Kalmarsund.. She was acquired in 1964 by Swedish Andersson, AE, Rönnäng and later in 1981 by the British Odiel Shipping Company.
