SS Grampian was a transatlantic ocean liner that was built in Scotland in 1907 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1925. She was operated originally by Allan Line, and later by Canadian Pacific Steamships. In the First World War she remained in commercial service but carried Canadian troops. In 1919 she survived a collision with an iceberg. In 1921 she was gutted by fire while being refitted. The refit was abandoned, and in 1925–26 she was scrapped.
In 1907 Alexander Stephen and Sons built a pair of sister ships for Allan Line in Linthouse, Glasgow. [1] Grampian was yard number 422. She was launched on July 25, 1907 and completed later that year. [2] Her sister Hesperian was yard number 425. She was launched on December 20, 1907 and completed in 1908. [3]
Grampian's registered length was 485.7 ft (148.0 m), her beam was 60.2 ft (18.3 m) and her depth was 38.1 ft (11.6 m). [4] She had berths for 1,460 passengers: 210 first class, 250 second class and 1,000 third class. [5] As built, her tonnages were 9,603 GRT, 6,119 NRT. [4]
Grampian had twin screws, each driven by a three-cylinder triple expansion engine. Between them her twin engines were rated at 825 NHP and gave her a speed of 17 knots (31 km/h). [5]
Allan Line registered Grampian at Glasgow. Her UK official number was 124220 and her code letters were HLKW. [4] In 1907 she made her maiden voyage from Glasgow to Montreal via Quebec. [1]
By 1910 Grampian had been equipped for submarine signalling and wireless telegraphy. The Marconi Company supplied and operated her wireless. Her call sign was MRN. [6] By 1911 her tonnages were reassessed as 10,947 GRT and 7,033 NRT. [7] By 1914 they had been reassessed again as 10,074 GRT and 6,439 NRT. [8]
In the First World War, Grampian remained in commercial service, but carried members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force from Canada to Europe. [9] In 1915 a U-boat torpedoed her sister ship Hesperian in the Western Approaches, killing 32 people. Hesperian was taken in tow, but sank two days later. [3]
In 1917 Canadian Pacific took over Allan Line. [10] Grampian remained in Allan Line ownership, and registered in Glasgow, but was now managed by Canadian Pacific. [2] [11]
In July 1919 Grampian was on an eastbound voyage from Montreal to Liverpool, carrying 750 passengers and a crew of 350. Early on the evening of July 9 she was in fog about 45 nautical miles (83 km) off Cape Race, Newfoundland when she sighted an iceberg. It was too close to avoid a collision, so her Master decided to hit the iceberg head-on. [12] [13] [14]
Grampian's bow was stove in by nearly 40 feet (12 m), killing two stewards in the fo'c's'le and injuring another steward and a stoker. But the damage did not extend below her waterline, and the iceberg was prevented from scraping down the side of her hull, which could have ruptured enough watertight compartments to sink her. She diverted to St John's, Newfoundland for emergency repairs. [12] [13] [14]
Grampian's passengers were transferred to RMS Empress of Britain to complete their journey to Liverpool. Grampian was given a temporary timber bow to enable her to reach a port she could receive permanent repairs. [15]
In 1921 Grampian was in Antwerp being refitted. On March 14 she caught fire and was badly damaged. Her owners abandoned the ship to her underwriters. She was scrapped in the Netherlands, but sources differ as to when and where. One states that it was in July 1925 at Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. [2] Another states that it was by F Rysdyk in Rotterdam in 1926. [10]
Nimrod was a wooden-hulled, three-masted sailing ship with auxiliary steam engine that was built in Scotland in 1867 as a whaler. She was the ship with which Ernest Shackleton made his Nimrod Expedition to Antarctica in 1908–09. After the expedition she returned to commercial service, and in 1919 she was wrecked in the North Sea with the loss of ten members of her crew.
SS Newfoundland was a wooden-hulled brigantine and steamship that was built in 1872 and wrecked in 1916. She was a cargo ship, and for part of her career she was a sealing ship. In 1916 she was renamed Samuel Blandford.
SS Minnedosa was one of a pair of transatlantic steam ocean liners that were built in the United Kingdom, launched in 1917 and operated by Canadian Pacific until 1935. Her sister ship was Melita.
USS Long Beach (AK-9) was a cargo steamship that was built in England in 1892 as Yarrowdale, passed through a succession of British, Greek and German owners, and was seized by the United States in 1917. She served in the US Navy until 1921, then in the US Merchant Marine, and was scrapped in 1924. She was called Nicolaos Castriotis in Greek ownership, Hohenfelde in German ownership, and Golden Gate from 1923.
Belgenland was an iron-hulled sail-steamer that was launched in England in 1878 and spent most of her career as a Belgian transatlantic ocean liner. She was renamed Venere in 1904 and scrapped in Italy in 1905.
SS Montrose was a British merchant steamship that was built in 1897 and wrecked in 1914. She was built as a cargo liner for Elder, Dempster & Company. In 1903 the Canadian Pacific Railway bought her and had her converted into a passenger liner.
Komagata Maru was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1890, was in German ownership until 1913, and then had a succession of Japanese owners until she was wrecked in 1926. She was launched as Stubbenhuk, renamed Sicilia in 1894, Komagata Maru in 1913 and Heian Maru in 1924.
USS Charlton Hall (ID-1359) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1907 and served in the merchant fleets of the United Kingdom, United States and Greece. She served in the United States Navy in 1918. She was renamed Atlantis and then Anastasis in 1930. She was scrapped in China in 1934.
USS Craster Hall (ID-1486) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1909 and served in the merchant fleets of first the United Kingdom and then the United States. In 1918–19 she served in the United States Navy. In 1927 she was damaged in a collision off the coast of Peru, was beached to prevent her sinking, but was wrecked.
USS Santa Rosalia (ID-1503) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1910 and served in the merchant fleets of the United Kingdom, United States and Greece. She served in the United States Navy in 1918–19. She was renamed Stefanos Costomenis in 1929 and sank in the North Atlantic in 1936.
USS Munwood (ID-4460) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1914 and was part of the United States Merchant Marine until 1928. From 1918 to 1919 she served in the United States Navy. In 1928 Yugoslav interests bought her and renamed her Vila. In 1935 she sank as the result of a collision in the Adriatic Sea.
SS Polar Chief was a merchant steamship that was built in England in 1897 and scrapped in Scotland in 1952. In her 55-year career she had previously been called Montcalm, RFA Crenella, Crenella, Rey Alfonso, Anglo-Norse and Empire Chief. Early in the First World War she spent eight months pretending to be the battleship HMS Audacious.
TSS City of Belfast was a passenger steamship that was built in England in 1893, renamed Nicolaos Togias in 1925, renamed Kephallinia in 1933 and sank in 1941. She was owned and registered in Britain until 1925, when she passed to Greek owners.
SS City of Bradford was a British passenger and cargo steamship that was built in Yorkshire in 1903, renamed Donau in 1916, reverted to City of Bradford in 1919 and became Hanne in 1936.
