Safi Landmark Hotel is a four star hotel, [1] in Kabul, Afghanistan. [2] It was opened in 2005 with the attached Kabul City Center mall. [3]

The Safi Landmark hotel is located in downtown Kabul near governmental offices, ministries, UN and embassies. It is approximately 15 minutes by road from Kabul International Airport.

Incidents

The hotel was near the site of a suicide attack on February 26, 2010, that killed 17 people, to which the Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed the group's responsibility. [6] The hotel was targeted again in another suicide bombing on February 14, 2011, at its entrance, killing three guards. [7] The hotel was at the time frequented by foreigners. [6]

The Safi Landmark has become one of the most famous hotels in Kabul for visitors and foreigners. The building has been subject to two terrorist attacks, in 2010 and 2011. In 2013, the mall received media attention for housing an unofficial Apple Store.

The February 2010 Kabul attack on 26 February 2010 was a combined suicide bombing and shooting attack. A car bomb levelled the Arya Guesthouse, also known as the Hamid Guesthouse, popular with Indian doctors. Two armed attackers then entered the nearby Park Residence, housing other foreigners. One detonated a suicide bomb, and the other was shot dead. The Safi Landmark Hotel nearby was badly damaged by the blasts. At least 18 people were killed and 36 more were injured.

On 27 January 2018, an ambulance was used as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device near Sidarat Square in Kabul, Afghanistan. At least 103 people were killed and 235 others wounded in the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Islamic State–Taliban conflict is an ongoing armed conflict between the Islamic State and the Taliban in Afghanistan. The conflict escalated when militants who were affiliated with Islamic State – Khorasan Province killed Abdul Ghani, a senior Taliban commander in Logar province on 2 February 2015. Since then, the Taliban and IS-KP have engaged in clashes over the control of territory, mostly in eastern Afghanistan, but clashes have also occurred between the Taliban and IS-KP cells which are located in the north-west and south-west.

In May 2020, a series of insurgent attacks took place in Afghanistan, starting when the Taliban killed 20 Afghan soldiers and wounded 29 others in Zari, Balkh and Grishk, Helmand on 1 and 3 May, respectively. On 12 May, a hospital's maternity ward in Kabul and a funeral in Kuz Kunar (Khewa), Nangarhar were attacked, resulting in the deaths of 56 people and injuries of 148 others, including newborn babies, mothers, nurses, and mourners.
