The San Diego Surge were a women's professional football team based in Santee, California, that competed in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA). The team played its home games at Santana High School and previously at Mira Mesa Senior High School. The Surge began play in the 2011 season. On September 10, 2019, the team ceased operations indefinitely. [1]
In their first season, the Surge finished 8–0, winning their division, and won the American Conference championship over the Dallas Diamonds before losing to the Boston Militia in the WFA championship game.

The Big West Conference (BWC) is an American collegiate athletic conference whose member institutions participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The conference was originally formed on July 1, 1969, as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), and in 1988 was renamed the Big West Conference. The conference stopped sponsoring college football after the 2000 season.
The So Cal Scorpions were a semi-pro women's American football team based in San Diego, California, that competed in the Women's Football Alliance. The Scorpions also played in the Independent Women's Football League and the Women's Professional Football League. The team played its home games at Balboa Stadium.

Previously, the Militia played in the Independent Women's Football League from 2008 until 2010, winning the IWFL championship in 2010. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the Militia played its home games at Dilboy Stadium in nearby Somerville.

The Women's Football Alliance (WFA) is a semi-pro full-contact Women's American football league that began play in 2009. It is the largest 11-on-11 football league for women in the world, and the longest running active women's football league in the U.S. Since 2016, the league has operated with three competitive levels: Pro, Division 2 and Division 3. The league is owned and operated by Jeff King and Lisa Gibbons King of Exeter, California. Lisa King is also a wide receiver for the WFA's Cali War.
The Minnesota Machine was a women's tackle football team of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA) from 2009 to 2017. The team was started by Lisa Olson on December 8, 2008, after stints with the Indiana Speed and Minnesota Vixen, and began play in the WFA's inaugural 2009 season. Based in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, the Machine played its home games at different locations in the area each year.
The San Diego Sting were a women's professional football team based in Carlsbad, California, that competed in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA). The team played its home games at Carlsbad High School. The Sting ceased operations after the 2012 season.
The Detroit Dark Angels were a women's semi-professional American football team founded in 2010 by Chuck Lauber and Aaron Brothers. In 2014, the team was purchased and reorganized as a 501(c)3 corporation DDA Football Inc., by a group that included former Detroit Demolition players Alecia Sweeney and Yarlen Henry along with Coach Keith Thomas.
The 2011 Women's Football Alliance season was the third season of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA), a league of 61 teams. The regular season began on Saturday, April 2, and ended on Saturday, June 18. After the playoffs, the season ended with the WFA Championship Game on Saturday, July 30 at Pennington Field in Bedford, Texas, home of the Dallas Diamonds and the defending champions from 2010, the Lone Star Mustangs. The championship was between the National Conference champ Boston Militia and the American Conference winner San Diego Surge, who are in their first year of play, and the Militia won the WFA title with a 34–19 over the Surge. It is the team's first Women's Football Alliance championship.
The Utah Jynx is a team of the Women's Football Alliance that began play in 2011 and joined the WFA in 2012. Following their successful 2011 season as an independent team, they were placed at #7 in the WFA preseason rankings by EZ Football Rankings. Based in West Valley City, Utah, the Jynx play their home games on the campus of Taylorsville High School.
The 2012 Women's Football Alliance season was the fourth season of the Women's Football Alliance, a league of 64 teams. The regular season began on Saturday, April 2, and ended on Saturday, June 18. After the playoffs, which fielded 12 teams in each conference instead of the 8 that were fielded in the 2011 season, the season ended with the WFA Championship Game on Saturday, August 4 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was shown live on ESPN3, the first time a live women's football game has been shown on a major network. In the championship, the San Diego Surge defeated the Chicago Force 40–36, winning its first championship, having lost the previous year to the Boston Militia.
The Boston Renegades are a tackle football team in the Women's Football Alliance. The Renegades play their home games at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere, Massachusetts.
Katie Sowers is an American football coach, formerly in the National Football League (NFL). She was the first openly gay and first female coach in Super Bowl history. Sowers began her American football career playing in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA). She joined the NFL in 2016 as a coach for the Atlanta Falcons and then with the San Francisco 49ers, before joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. Sowers currently works in the athletic department of Ottawa University.
The Women's National Football Conference (WNFC) is a semi-pro full-contact Women's American football league in the United States. With teams across the United States, the WNFC had its first game in 2019 with fourteen regular teams and one exhibition team.
