Sandema is the capital town of Builsa North District, a district in the Upper East Region of Ghana. [1] [2]
The town of Sandema has several educational institutions ranging from Day Care facilities to second cycle institutions. There are three second cycle institutions, the oldest being the Sandema Senior High/Technical School. The Sandema Senior High School and the Youth Leadership Training Institute are the other two. There is no tertiary institution in the town yet. [3] [4] The school is a second cycle institution. [5] Some basic schools in the area are Sandema Preparatory Junior High School and Success International Junior High School. [1]
Sandema is the seat of the Paramount Chief of the Builsa traditional area. The people of Sandema speak the Buli language which is a member of the Kwa language group. There is also a sizable resident population of people of Moore origin in the town who are mainly Muslim.
The Chief Palace. The Sandema Chief Palace is located in the center of Sandema known as the Abil-Yeri community. The Palace is the home of the OVER LORD of the entire BUILSA land (NAB AZANTILOW AZAGSUG II), son of the late Dr. NAB AYIETA AZANTILOW known for his bravery during the world wars days.
The Builsa Community Bank Limited (BUCO Bank) at Sandema has been a great source of credit and a place of making deposits for the people of Sandema in the Builsa North, the people in the Builsa South, and some people in the other parts of the Upper East Region. [6]
The Fiok festival takes place annually in December to commemorate the victory of Builsa forces over the slave raider Babatu in the Battle of Sandema in the 1890s. In the visually stunning event, costumed men from across the district carry ancient armaments and perform dances.
The Upper East Region is located in north Ghana and is the third smallest of the 16 administrative regions in Ghana. Builsa North Municipal District is one of the fifteen districts in Upper East Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Builsa District in 1988, until the southern part of the district was split off to create Builsa South District on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Builsa North District, which it was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 19 December 2018 to become Builsa North Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of Upper East Region and has Sandema as its capital town.

Effiduase is made up of mostly traders. Effiduase is the district capital of Skyere East District. Effiduase houses the biggest hospital in its Sekyere East district.

Akantigsi Afoko was a Ghanaian teacher and politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Northern territories from 1951 to 1954. In 1954 he was elected to represent the Builsa electoral district in the Legislative Assembly, he was re-elected in 1956 and maintained his post as the member of parliament for the constituency until 1965. In 1965 he became the member of parliament for the Sandema constituency. He served in this capacity until the ousting of the Nkrumah government in 1966. Prior to politics Afoko was a trained teacher who taught at Fumbisi, a town in the Builsa District of Ghana.
The Battle of Sandema was a battle in Africa that was fought between Babatu and the people of Sandema. The battle is said to have taken place at a place called Akumcham, where the Builsa united and defeated the leader of the Zabarma warriors.
Sylvester Ateteng Azantilow was a Ghanaian politician and a member of the First Parliament of the Fourth Republic representing the Builsa North Constituency in the Upper East Region of Ghana. He was a member of the National Democratic Congress.
Mirigu Senior High School is a public co-eductional second-cycle institution located in mirigu a town in the Kassena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. In 2019, the school took part in the National Science and Maths Quiz organized in the Upper East region and perform creditably.
Fumbisi is a town in the Builsa South District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The town is known for rice production. In 2019, the Paramount Chief of Fumbisi was Nab Clement Anyatuik Akanko II.
