Nirupama Sanjeev is a retired Indian professional tennis player, and the former Indian No. 1. In the 1998 Australian Open, she became the second Indian woman in the open era to feature in a Grand Slam main draw, and the first one in singles to feature and then win a round at a main draw, beating Gloria Pizzichini. She has also won the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games in Mixed Doubles, partnering Mahesh Bhupathi. Sanjeev was the first Indian female to enter the top 200 world singles rankings.

Since 2018, the event is held at the Laurel Oak Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, United States. It has been held at the United Tennis Center in Bradenton, Florida in its inaugural event in 2008 and in 2017. Other locations were Lakewood Ranch (2015-2016) and Longboat Key (2009-2014). An expected move to Bath and Racquet Athletic Club near Bee Ridge and U.S. 41 fell through as the tournament was moved to United Tennis Center in 2017.

The Shanghai Masters is a professional men's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts, and held annually in early October at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in the Minhang District of Shanghai.
