Saraswathy s/o Kandasami (born 24 September 1968) is a Malaysian politician and lawyer who has served as the Deputy Minister of National Unity in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister Aaron Ago Dagang since December 2023 as well as Senator since December 2022. She served as the Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development in the PH administration under Prime Minister Anwar and Minister Ewon Benedick from December 2022 to December 2023. She is a member of the People's Justice Party (PKR),a component party of the PH coalition and has served as a Vice President of PKR since July 2022. [1] [2]
After the 2022 PKR party election on 20 July 2022,President of PKR Anwar appointed Saraswathy as the Vice President of PKR,serving alongside four elected Vice Presidents Amirudin Shari,Chang Lih Kang,Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Aminuddin Harun as well as another two appointed Vice Presidents,Awang Husaini Sahari and Nurul Izzah Anwar.
In the 2022 general election,Saraswathy made her electoral debut after being nominated by PH to contest for the Tapah federal seat. She lost to defending MP Saravanan Murugan of Barisan Nasional (BN) by a minority of 5,064 votes.
On 10 December 2022,Prime Minister Anwar appointed Saraswathy as Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives,deputising for Minister Ewon. As she was not an MP,Sarawasthy was also appointed as Senator for her to hold the deputy ministerial position.
In a cabinet reshuffle on 12 December 2023,Saraswathy was retained as a Deputy Minister but was moved from the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative to the Ministry of National Unity,deputising for Minister Aaron. On 27 March 2024,she revealed that the proposed amendments to the 2012 Rukun Tetangga act were being fine-tuned. She added that the amendments would pay more attention to neighbourhood pillar initiative than was being implemented. In addition,she reported that there were 8,428 neighbourhood watch committees established nationwide with the membership of 210,000 individuals,encompassing 12.5 million people. Besides,she also outlined the objective of the ministry was to realise the empowerment initiatives as a force for progressive community development through eight areas of focus ranging from the economy and livelihood,security and self-reliance,leadership,community well-being,lifelong learning and the environment to cultural and digital heritage. Furthermore,she noted that several activities had been drawn up to encourage the participation of youths in neighbourhood community (KRT),like the Young,Effective and Smart (YES) programme,Jiran Muda as well as e-Entrepreneur and Young Neighbour Innovation Team initiative. The People's Justice Party,is a reformist political party in Malaysia formed on 3 August 2003 through a merger of the party's predecessor,the National Justice Party,with the socialist Malaysian People's Party. The party's predecessor was founded by Wan Azizah Wan Ismail during the height of the Reformasi movement on 4 April 1999 after the arrest of her husband,former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. At the 2022 Malaysian general election,the PH coalition which the PKR was part of was returned to power again,albeit without a majority,leading it to form a unity government with political rivals. The party is one of main partners of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruling coalition in Malaysia.
Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim since December 2022 and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Setiawangsa since May 2018. The 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis was triggered after several Members of Parliament (MPs) of the 14th Malaysian Parliament changed party support,leading to the loss of a parliamentary majority,the collapse of two successive coalition governments,and the resignation of two Prime Ministers. Ewon Benedick is a Malaysian politician who has served as Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development in the Anwar Ibrahim Cabinet since December 2022,the Member of Parliament (MP) for Penampang since November 2022 and Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kadamaian since May 2018. He served as State Minister of Rural Development of Sabah in the Sabah Heritage Party (WARISAN) administration under former Chief Minister Shafie Apdal from May 2018 to the collapse of the WARISAN state administration in September 2020. He is a member of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO),a component party of the PH coalition. He has served as the 3rd President of UPKO since January 2023 and the 2nd State Chairman of PH of Sabah since December 2024. He was also Vice President of UPKO before his promotion to the party presidency in January 2023. He is one of the two UPKO MPs and sole UPKO MLA. The Anwar Ibrahim cabinet is the current federal cabinet of Malaysia,formed on 3 December 2022,nine days after Anwar Ibrahim took office as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia. The composition of the cabinet was announced by Anwar a day earlier on 2 December 2022,consisting of most of the political coalitions and parties represented in the 15th Parliament. He also served as Director of the logging firm MM Golden (M) Sdn Bhd prior to his deputy ministerial appointment.
