Sawai Man Singh Medical College, also known as SMS Medical College, is a government medical college in Jaipur, Rajasthan state, India. It was established in 1947 and was the 15th centre for medical education in India.

History

SMS Medical College marks its start with the establishment of a maternity hospital, a dispensary and a medical school in Jaipur in 1855, officially inaugurated in 1861. However, this medical school was closed in 1864. It was only in 1945 that Mirza Ismail, the Diwan (Prime Minister) of the Jaipur State, started working on the project of establishing a medical college in the state, which was to be the 15th centre for medical education in India. The foundation stone was laid down by Lord Wavell, the Governor-General and Viceroy of India, on 13 March 1946 and Sawai Man Singh Medical College was officially opened in 1947. [2]

The first principal of the college was G.N. Sen who was replaced shortly afterwards by S.C. Mehta. In 1951, S.K. Menon took over as principal. In 1952 the college was recognized by the Medical Council of India and postgraduate courses started in 1952. [2]

Veer Singh Mehta, is an Indian neurosurgeon. He received his education and training at SMS Medical College Jaipur and later at AIIMS. Mehta is a pioneer in surgery for brachial plexus injuries in India and is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He was elected as the president of the Neurological Society and as the President of the South Asian Neurosurgeons. He is renowned worldwide for his work in the field of Brain Stem Surgery, Brachial Plexus Surgery, Aneurysms and Spinal Tumor Surgery. He is well known Brain Tumor Surgeon in India and has treated numerous Indian and International patient all across the globe for Brain disorders. The Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 2005. Noted neurosurgeon B. K. Misra was his junior at AIIMS Delhi.

Mahendra Bhandari is an Indian surgeon who has made substantial contributions to the specialty of urology, medical training, hospital administration, robotic surgery and medical ethics. For his efforts, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India in 2000. Bhandari is currently Senior Bio-scientist and Director of Robotic Surgery Research & Education at the Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI) in Detroit, MI. He was the Symposium coordinator of the International Robotic Urology Symposium. He also has been the CEO of the Vattikuti Foundation since 2010.

Sawai Man Singh Hospital is the major hospital of Jaipur and Rajasthan state of India. The construction of the hospital building began in 1934. The hospital is named after Sawai Man Singh II, then King of Jaipur. The hospital also provides practical training to the students of the Sawai Man Singh Medical College. SMS hospital is under pressure due to a large number of patients and rare diseased patients from across the state as it is one of the few government super speciality hospitals.

Ashok Panagariya was an Indian neurologist, medical researcher and academic, known for his research on nerve cells and neuromyotonia. He was a vice chancellor of Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, Jaipur and a member of the Planning Board of the Government of Rajasthan. He was a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. Ashok Panagariya was awarded the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2014. He died on 11 June 2021 due to COVID-19 complications.

Digamber Singh was an Indian politician, who served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Rajasthan. Singh spent over two decades as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, representing the Kumher Assembly constituency, later renamed as Deeg-Kumher. He held numerous imperative Cabinet portfolios in the Government of Rajasthan, including Minister of Health, Ayurveda, Family Welfare and from 2009 onwards as the Minister of Industries.
