Secundilactobacillus is a genus of lactic acid bacteria containing secondary fermenters separated from the primary fermenters of Lactobacillus after the latter group depletes hexoses and disaccharides. [1] [2] These Gram-positive, rod-shaped heterofermenters have been isolated from beer and apple cider, and they are generally incapable of reducing fructose to mannitol. [1]

Phylogenetic relationships of twelve species reclassified by Zheng et al. 2020

Using whole-genome sequencing, Zheng et al. 2020 reclassified twelve Lactobacillus species into the novel genera Secundilactobacillus. The List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) currently recognizes fifteen member species: [1] [2]

These species have genomes sizes ranging from 1.85 Mbp for S. oryzae to 3.62 Mbp for S. collinoides, and their GC-content ranges from 41.03-47%. [1]

<i>Weissella</i> Genus of bacteria

Weissella is a genus of gram-positive bacteria placed within the family Lactobacillaceae, formerly considered species of the Leuconostoc paramesenteroides group. The morphology of Weissella species varies from spherical or lenticular cells to irregular rods. Several strains of Weissella cibaria and Weissella confusa have shown probiotic potential. In particular, the cell-free culture supernatant of Weissella confusa shows a number of beneficial characteristics, such as antibacterial potential and anti-inflammatory efficiency. However, several strains of W. confusa are opportunistic bacteria. A number of studies have been done on the safety of the bacterial species, indicating their probiotic potential. The Senate Commission on Food Safety has validated the use of W. confusa in food.

Weissella oryzae is a Gram-positive bacterium from the genus of Weissella which has been isolated from fermented Japanese rice from Tochigi Prefecture in Japan.

Limosilactobacillus is a thermophilic and heterofermentative genus of lactic acid bacteria created in 2020 by splitting from Lactobacillus. The name is derived from the Latin limosus "slimy", referring to the property of most strains in the genus to produce exopolysaccharides from sucrose. The genus currently includes 31 species or subspecies, most of these were isolated from the intestinal tract of humans or animals. Limosilactobacillus reuteri has been used as a model organism to evaluate the host-adaptation of lactobacilli to the human and animal intestine and for the recruitment of intestinal lactobacilli for food fermentations.
