Serrognathus is a genus of beetles in the stag beetle family Lucanidae. [1] Species of the genus are found in the Indo-Australian region.

Taxonomy

In 2011, the genus Serrognathus was reclassified and merged into the genus Dorcus. Previously, specimens with serriform teeth on the mandibles and sable pigment were separated from specimens with a singular or multiple bulky notches on the mandibles and lustrous sable pigmentation which were placed in the genus Dorcus. Latterly, the genus has been resurrected and is once again accepted as valid.

Distribution and habitat

Species in this genus are found in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea, India, and Australia.

Threats

In view of their impressive jaws, specimens are often mounted for display alongside with butterflies and tarantulas. Unfortunately, as wild specimens are collected for mounting it should be expected that there will be a corresponding decline in wild populations.

The false potto is a lorisoid primate of uncertain taxonomic status found in Africa. Anthropologist Jeffrey H. Schwartz named it in 1996 as the only species of the genus Pseudopotto on the basis of two specimens that had previously been identified as a potto (Perodicticus). Its type location is Mount Tuhua summit, near Lake Kaniere on the West Coast of New Zealand. The name servandus is a Latin word meaning "[something] to be preserved, conserved, looked after".

<i>Geodorcus sororum</i> Species of beetle

Geodorcus sororum is a large flightless species of stag beetle in the family Lucanidae. It was discovered in 1973 by Mr. A. Wright on an expedition to Middle Sister Island/Te Awanui, one of The Sisters Islands/Rangitatahi which are part of the Chatham Islands in New Zealand. This holotype specimen is held in the New Zealand Arthropod Collection. It was first described by Beverley Holloway in 2007. The name sororum is translated from Latin to mean "belonging to the sisters".
