Sharon Ferris-Choat (born 17 January 1974 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) is a New Zealand-Canadian professional sailor, Olympian, and offshore racing skipper. She has competed in multiple Olympic Games, set world sailing speed records, and became one of the first women to win a round-the-world yacht race. Over her career spanning more than three decades, Ferris-Choat has been a trailblazer for women in competitive sailing, advocating for sustainability, mentorship, and increased female participation in the sport.
Sharon Ferris-Choat was born in Canada and traveled to New Zealand with her Kiwi parents when she was a young child. Sharon grew up in the Bay of Islands, where she discovered sailing as a teenager. She was inspired by the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race, particularly Tracy Edwards’ all-female team aboard Maiden, which fueled her ambition to pursue professional sailing.
Encouraged by early regatta successes, Ferris-Choat balanced sailing with education. With determination and perseverance, she rapidly progressed in the sport, earning top results in youth and national sailing competitions.
Olympic Career
Ferris-Choat represented New Zealand in two Olympic Games:
1996 Summer Olympics (Atlanta, USA) – 5th place, Europe class.
She also competed in numerous Olympic-class regattas, including the ISAF World Championships and World Cup events, securing podium finishes. In 2004, her crew won a silver medal at the Yngling World Championships, ranking them at the top of the Yngling class world rankings.
