Geography

Sharpesburg Township is located in the northeast section of Iredell County. It is bordered by New Hope Township to the north, Concord Township and the Yadkin River to the south, Olin Township to the east, and Alexander County to the west. The following streams flow through Sharpesburg Township: Snow Creek, Buck Branch, Little Rocky Creek, Patterson Creek, Tuckers Creek, and the Yadkin River. [2] [5]

History

Sharpesburg Township was named for William Sharpe (17421818), who lived in the area. Historic sites within Sharpesburg Township include the Damascus Baptist Church built in 1855 and the Snow Creek Methodist Church and Burying Ground built in 18841885. [2]

Another notable resident of Sharpesburg Township was William Franklin Wasson (18581874), who was the Sheriff of Iredell County when Tom Dula was arrested and tried. Wasson was buried at the Snow Creek Methodist Church Burying Ground. [6]

Snow Creek Methodist Church and Burying Ground United States historic place

Snow Creek Methodist Church and Burying Ground is a historic Methodist church building and cemetery located near Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. The church was established in 1801. The existing church building was built in 1884–1885, and is a one-story, one bay by four bay, rectangular frame church in the late Greek Revival style. It has a steep gable roof and vestibule added in the mid-20th century. Also on the property is the contributing church cemetery, which dates from 1780. Graves in the cemetery include that of William Sharpe.

Damascus Baptist Church Arbor United States historic place

Damascus Baptist Church Arbor is a historic Baptist church arbor located in Sharpesburg Township south of Love Valley, Iredell County, North Carolina. It was built in 1855, and is an open rectangular structure measuring 35 feet by 55 feet. The Damascus Baptist Church Arbor continues to be used for brush arbor revivals. It has a gable-on-hip roof and hand hewn, pegged frame, log rafters. The arbor is part of a Damascus Baptist Church complex that includes a church, education building, and cemetery.

Fourth Creek Congregation Place in Province of North Carolina

The community of the Fourth Creek Congregation was a group of Scots-Irish Presbyterians who first arrived in the Province of North Carolina in the mid to late 1730s and established a congregation by 1750 under pastor John Thompson in Anson County which became Rowan County in 1753 and finally Iredell County in 1788. The site of the Fourth Creek Congregation was chosen as the location of the county seat of Iredell County in 1789 and was named Statesville in 1789. The Fourth Creek Presybterian Church officially became the First Presbyterian Church of Statesville in 1875.

Williamsburgh, North Carolina Town in North Carolina, United States

Williamsburgh was a town in north Iredell County, North Carolina from 1815 to 1971. It was the second town in Iredell County established by the North Carolina General Assembly, after Statesville, North Carolina. In the 1800s, the town contained a tavern, post office, church, and possibly a horse racing venue. Williamsburgh was located in the southeast section of Union Grove Township, which was created in 1868. The only portions of the town to survive after its charter was repealed in 1971 was the Macedonia Methodist Church.

The Concord Presbyterian Church was founded as an offshoot of the Fourth Creek Congregation in 1775. It was located west of the Fourth Creek Congregation that later became the center of the city of Statesville, North Carolina.
