Sierra Schmidt (born May 6, 1998) is a retired American competition swimmer who swam for the University of Michigan and was a distance freestyle medalist in the 2015 Pan American Games and 2016 World Cup.
Schmidt was born to Melinda and Joseph Schmidt in Scottsdale, Arizona. [1]
In Junior High, around 2012–2014, Sierra swam for Hall of Fame Coach Dick Shoulberg while attending Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania and competed in a number of events including the 1650 free. [2] [3] On February 22–23, 2014, taking a first-place finish with a time of 4:46.29 in the 500 freestyle, she helped lead Germantown Academy to a first-place finish at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships at LaSalle University. [4] In 2014, she was named a Catholic League All-Star. [5]
Schmidt graduated from the 21st Century Cyber Charter School in Exton, Pennsylvania in 2017. [1] She was a multiple time junior national champion in 2014 and competed for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club from 2014 to 2016. [6]
Schmidt won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in the 800 metre freestyle. This performance set a Pan American Games record. [7]
She competed for the University of Michigan and Club Wolverine under Head Coach Mike Bottom from 2017 to 2021 and graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2021, earning a BA in film, Television, and Media, with honors. She was a six-time CSCAA All-American, Big Ten champion in the 800 free relay, as well as a two-time Big-Ten Distinguished Scholar and four-time CSCAA Scholar All-American during her time in Ann Arbor.
Schmidt announced that she signed a sponsorship deal with TYR Sport on June 3, 2021. [8]
Schmidt is known as the “Dancing Queen” for her ritual of dancing behind the starting blocks prior to her races. [9] [10] [11]
Schmidt qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, where she finished 10th in the 400 meter freestyle and 8th in the 800 meter freestyle. [12] At the postponed 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, June 13–20, 2021, Sierra finished 6th in the 400 meter freestyle, 8th in the 800 meter freestyle, and 7th in the 1500 meter freestyle, one of only three swimmers to qualify for all three distance finals in the arduous Olympic prelim/final schedule. Her best time in the 1500 free from a month prior, 16:06.85, was ranked 19th in the world at that time.
Schmidt announced her retirement on June 29, 2023, following her participation at the 2023 U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis. Schmidt's last event in the competition was the 400 meter freestyle, which took place on June 30, 2023. [13] [11]
Kate Marie Ziegler is an American competition swimmer who specializes in freestyle and long-distance events. Ziegler has won a total of fifteen medals in major international competition, including eight golds, five silvers, and two bronzes spanning the World Aquatics and the Pan Pacific Championships. She was a member of the 2012 United States Olympic team, and competed in the 800-meter freestyle event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
David Lee "Dave" Wharton is an American former competition swimmer, 1988 Olympic silver medalist, and former world record-holder in two events. During his competition swimming career, Wharton set world records in both the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley events.
David "Dave" Charles Berkoff is an American former competition Hall of Fame swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in two events. Berkoff was a backstroke specialist who won a total of four medals during his career at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992. He is best known for breaking the world record for the 100-meter backstroke three times, beginning at the 1988 Olympic trial preliminaries, becoming the first swimmer to go under 55 seconds for the event. He is also remembered for his powerful underwater backstroke start, the eponymous "Berkoff Blastoff" which after a strong push-off from the side of the pool used a horizontal body position with locked arms outstretched overhead and an undulating or wavelike aerodynamic dolphin kick to provide thrust and build speed.
Francis Crippen was an American long-distance swimmer. After being a pool swimmer for most of his career, Crippen made the transition to open water swimming in 2006. In international competitions, Crippen won seven medals, five of which were in the open water and two in the pool. Crippen died during an open water swimming race in the United Arab Emirates in 2010 at the age of 26.
Madeleine Marie Crippen, also known by her married name as Madeleine Plankey, is an American former competition swimmer. Crippen represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Allison Rodgers Schmitt is an American competition swimmer who specializes in freestyle events. She is a four-time Olympian and a ten-time Olympic medalist.
Chloe Elizabeth Sutton Mackey is an American former competition swimmer who specializes in freestyle and long-distance events. Sutton represented the United States at two consecutive Olympic Games. Sutton has won a total of five medals in major international competition, three gold, one silver, and one bronze spanning the Open Water Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and Pan American Games. She was a member of the 2012 United States Olympic team, and competed in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky is an American competitive swimmer. She has won nine Olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. With 14 medals and 9 gold medals, she is also the most decorated American woman, most decorated female swimmer, the female with the most gold medals and fifth most decorated athlete in Olympic history. She has won a record 16 individual gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships. Ledecky's eight individual medals at the Olympics and 26 overall medals at the World Aquatics Championships are records in women's swimming. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women's 800- and 1500-meter freestyle, as well as the former world record holder in the women's 400-meter freestyle. She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events. She is widely regarded as the greatest female swimmer of all time and one of the greatest Olympians of all time.
Katrina Diane Radke Gerry is a former competitive swimmer who represented the United States at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
Pathunyu "Guy" Yimsomruay is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke and in individual medley events. He swam for Thailand in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but did not make the finals. He excelled, however, as a four-time medalist at the Southeast Asian Games in 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003. While studying in the United States, Yimsomruay earned four All-American and five All-ACC honors for the Virginia Cavaliers.
Madeline Jane "Maya" DiRado-Andrews is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley events. She attended and swam for Stanford University, where she won NCAA titles in the 200 and 400 meter individual medley in 2014 and graduated with a degree in management science and engineering. At the 2016 US Olympic Trials, DiRado qualified to swim the 200 meter and 400 meter individual medley events, as well as the 200 meter backstroke, at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she won a gold medal in the women's 4x200 meter freestyle relay, a silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley, a bronze medal in the women's 200 meter individual medley, and a gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke. Following the Olympics, DiRado retired from the sport.

Alexandra Walsh is an American competitive swimmer. She is known for her versatility in all four strokes that has allowed her to have success in medley events. Growing up, Walsh was a phenom who started setting national age group records at 12 in 2014. She led her high school team to multiple state and national championships. At the 2019 Pan American Games, she won three gold medals.
Katherine Cadwallader Douglass is an American competitive swimmer. A versatile swimmer who competes in many events, Douglass won her first major international medal at the 2020 Olympic Games and then won three medals at the 2022 World Championships. Douglass then won six medals, including two golds, at the 2023 World Championships. At the 2024 World Championships, she won five medals, including two golds. Douglass won four medals, including two golds, at the 2024 Olympic Games; she became the Olympic champion in the 200 m breaststroke.
Kayla Han is an American competitive swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. She is a 800 m freestyle Champion in 2023 World Junior Championships. In 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, she won silver medalist in the 400-meter individual medley. At the 2021 U.S. Open Championships, Han achieved a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley and placed seventh in the 800-meter freestyle. She won the B-final of the 400-meter individual medley in Wave I of the 2020 USA Swimming Olympic Trials where she was the youngest swimmer to compete at 13 years of age. A video of the race posted by NBC Sports on YouTube became the most viewed video from the year's Olympic trials.
Dick Shoulberg was an American Hall of Fame club, Prep School, and U.S. Olympic swim coach best known for coaching swimming at Pennsylvania's Germantown Academy in Fort Washington. From 1969 to 2015, he led the Germantown Academy men's team to two National Prep School Championships, and the Women's team to five women's Prep School Championships. He also coached and founded the prestigious Germantown Academy Aquatic age group team which merged with the Foxcatcher Swim Club from 1985-2000.
