Silicon Valley University (SVU) was a private, non-profit higher educational institution located in San Jose, California. The university was accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) at the bachelor's degree and master's degree levels until December 7, 2017. On April 5, 2018, the state regulators of California ordered SVU to close and refund students' money within 45 days. [2] On May 24, 2021, SVU was granted an Approval to Operate for an Institution Non-Accredited by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) by the State of California. [3]

History

Silicon Valley University (SVU) was founded in 1997 by the current President, Dr. Jerry Shiao, and began offering the MSCS program in 1999. Over 5000 students have graduated from the MSCS program during the 18-year time when the program was offered, until 2017 when SVU lost its ACICS accreditation and the State of California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) license. On December 20, 2019, SVU filed an application with BPPE for an Approval to Operate for an Institution Non-Accredited license. On May 24, 2021, BPPE granted SVU the Approval to Operate for an Institution Non-Accredited license. In fall 2021, the institution restarted its Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program. The MSCS program is a graduate degree program providing students with a strong theoretical background and practical experience in keeping current with the high-tech trends and state-of-the-art technologies in Silicon Valley. Special topics are offered to introduce the latest developments and issues in both academic research and industry application areas. State-of-the-art hardware equipment and software tools currently used by most companies in Silicon Valley are used in the class.

The California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) was a unit of the California Department of Consumer Affairs whose purpose was to protect students by establishing academic standards for private institutions of higher education in California. BPPVE approval or exemption was required by the State of California to ensure consumer safety from fraudulent or substandard education providers. The agency ceased operation on July 1, 2007, when the legislative authority for its creation expired. A new agency, the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, took its place on January 1, 2010.

California Pacific School of Theology is a higher-education Christian theological school in the United States non-accredited at this time, issuing religious degrees in West Hills, California. The school offers distance education for Graduate and Undergraduate programs.

Abraham Lincoln University (ALU) is a private, for-profit online university based in Glendale, California.

Coding House was a coding bootcamp in Silicon Valley, California. The 14-week-long bootcamp taught students JavaScript and other technologies. Founded in 2014 by Nicholas James, it was ordered shut down in November 2016 by the regulatory agency California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) for violating California law many times. BPPE denied Coding House's licensing application three times and found that Coding House had engaged in false advertising.
