Simon Abeywickrema (1903 - 2 May 1948) was a Sri Lankan politician. [1]

Simon Abeywickrema was born in 1903 in Baddegama and received his education at Richmond College and St. Aloysious' College in Galle.

Abeywickrema unsuccessfully contested for the State Council, in the Udugama electorate, at the 1931 and 1936 elections but was subsequently elected in a 1938 by-election. When the United National Party was formed in 1946, he was selected as the party's vice president.

Abeywickrema was elected, representing Baddegama, at the 1st parliamentary election in 1947. [2] He served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport in the D. S. Senanayake cabinet. [3] Abeywickrema died in office on 2 May 1948. In the subsequent July by-election his younger brother, Henry, unsuccessfully contested the seat of Baddegama, losing to H. W. Amarasuriya. [4]

Abeywickrema was recognised with the naming of Simon Abeywickrema Avenue, a 0.27 km (0.17 mi) road in Mount Lavinia.

H. W. Amarasuriya

Henry Woodward Amarasuriya was a Ceylonese plantation owner, politician, educationist and philanthropist. He was the Cabinet Minister for Trade and Commerce in the cabinet of D. S. Senanayake. A former member of the Ceylon state council, H. W. Amarasuriya was a founding member and the first general secretary of the United National Party. He also held the position of Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees in the first parliament of Ceylon. A member of the first Education Executive Committee of the state council and a former general manager of the Buddhist schools, he did a great service to improve the education in Ceylon.

Baddegama electoral district was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between August 1947 and February 1989. The district was named after the town of Baddegama in Galle District, Southern Province. The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation electoral system for electing members of Parliament. The existing 160 mainly single-member electoral districts were replaced with 22 multi-member electoral districts. Baddegama electoral district was replaced by the Galle multi-member electoral district at the 1989 general elections, the first under the proportional representation system.
