Sirens Football Club is a professional football club from the north-western seaside village of San Pawl il-Baħar, in Malta. Founded in 1968, they currently compete in the Maltese Challenge League.
Sirens FC was first known as "St. Paul's Bay Football Team" for the seasons 1968–69 and participated in the Amateur Soccer Cup Competition (ASCC). In their debut season, the St Paul's Bay team ended runners up that year. After obtaining such a good placing, the committee applied for affiliation in the Third Division of the Malta Football Association. A delegation from the MFA visited the club, which at that time was on the same premises as the Sirens Aquatic Sports Club. At this point one has to mention Joe Muscat, known as id-Debu, who is the founder of Sirens FC.[1]
Up to 1972 the club was known as Sirens Football Team because as mentioned before, they had no premises until a house was obtained at 61, St Paul's Street, St. Paul's Bay. The new premise was officially opened by the Hon. Minister of Culture and Education, Miss Agatha Barbara on 29 January 1972.
Season 2013–14 The blues left the league with an unbeaten record in the 2013-14 Maltese Third Division that made a big honour to them, Giovanni Galea made his all time goal scoring goals by scoring 44 goals in a single season, making him the record goalscorer in a single season in Maltese football (any level), breaking the record of Danilo Doncic.
After the first historic promotion, the team achieved another goal securing a place in a European competition for the first time, after reaching the fourth place in the season 2019-20 (terminated on 18 May 2020 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the island).[3] In its first ever European match, the team lost against Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia for 2–1, being eliminated in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.[4]
Sirens Supporters Club (SS.13) is the latest registered supporting club in Malta. The club was founded in 2013 as in that year in 2013-14 Maltese Third Division Sirens FC were in their glory as they won the league title unbeaten and ending the season with a dramatic draw against Swieqi United. Sirens supporters are also called Sirens Ultras 13.
In season 2013–2014 Sirens FC held the record for most supporters in the Malta Third Division, which record was previously held by Attard F.C. and Swieqi United F.C. The support for the club is constantly growing as presently the club plays in the Maltese Premier League for the first time ever.
Last game and derby of the 2015-16 Maltese Second Division against Mgarr United, Sirens supporters for the first time in the history organized a choreography to celebrate promotion to the Malta First Division. Unfortunately the boys in blue lost the derby and the chance to win the title, but the supporters never stopped chanting for their team that climbed in a higher league.
Sirens rivals are Mgarr United and Mellieha S.C. games between these clubs are usually referred to as The Derby of the North. Matches between Sirens and Mellieha are also called The Blue Derby, as both teams has the same color.
In 2011, they have a newly built training ground and pitch named Sirens Stadium with official Fifa-rated artificial surface. Most of the team's home games will be played at this venue. Before the stadium was built in the 1970s the St. Paul's Bay Football Club, as they were referred to before, or the man in blue played at the MFA stadiums in Ta' Qali till the 2010. The new stadium is built just between Bugibba and St. Paul's Bay as it is situated between the Coast Road highway and high-rise buildings of Bugibba. FIFA officially confirmed that the new Sirens Stadium can host competitive games from two local leagues, Maltese Third Division and the Maltese Second Division. The stadium can hold over 1000 supporters in 3 stands, the left support stand, the VIP area and the right support stand. Usually whenever Sirens play in the stadium supporters use the left side also called the home end.
Qormi Football Club is a Maltese football club from the city of Qormi, that currently plays in the Maltese National Amateur League.
Mosta Football Club is a Maltese football club based in the town of Mosta on the island of Malta. They have played in the Maltese Premier League since the 2011–12 season.
Attard Football Club is a Maltese football club from the small village of Attard in central Malta. They currently play in the Maltese Challenge League. The club was founded in 1974 and wears a red and black striped kit. The club are nicknamed Seracini.
The 2008–09 Maltese Second Division season, also known as the 2008–09 BOV 2nd Division due to sponsorship reason) started on 27 September 2008 and ended on 10 May 2009. Mellieha and Marsa were relegated from the First Division. The promoted teams were Gozo FC and Zebbug Rangers. Zebbug had to start the season with a five point deduction due to incidents which occurred the previous season. The 2008–09 Maltese Second Division was won by Balzan.The runners-up were Melita, who finished 2 points off Lija Athletic. Mgarr United and Marsa were relegated to the Third Division. This was the third straight relegation for Marsa, who 3 years previously were competing in the Premier League and now have to compete in the Third Division. Naxxar Lions were also relegated as they lost in the promotion-relegation play-offs to Santa Lucia. The play-offs were won by Zurrieq.
The Maltese Second Division 2007–08 started on 21 September 2007 and ended on 18 May 2008. San Gwann and Naxxar Lions were relegated from 2006–07 Maltese First Division.The promoted teams from 2006–07 Maltese Third Division were Mgarr United, Sirens and Zurrieq.The league was won by San Gwann.They finished on 47 points, level with Balzan Youths and Rabat Ajax.They were declared champions for their superior goal difference. Balzan Youths and Rabat Ajax had to play a promotion play-off for the team to get promoted. The play-off was won 3-0 by Rabat Ajax. At the other end Sirens and Zurrieq were relegated while Mgarr United had to play the relegation playoffs with four teams from the Third Division. Zurrieq were relegated because they had a 5-point deduction by the Malta Football Association. They had three points deducted after failing to present the signed balance sheet. Zurrieq had another two points deducted after being found guilty of casing the incidents which led the BOV Second Division match against Luxol on April 27 to be abandoned. Referee Chris Francalanza abandoned the match on 69 minutes after he was hit by a Zurrieq player. If they were deducted no points it would have been Mgarr United relegated. Mgarr managed to win the relegation playoffs and secure their second division status for the first time.
Swieqi United Football Club is a Maltese football and futsal club representing the municipality of Swieqi. The club was created by a group of University Students and Swieqi residents. Founded in 2009, the club enjoys a good fan-base especially amongst young people on the island. The team plays in Orange shirts and use blue as the away kit. The club is renowned for giving young players the opportunity to play football and the club's symbol is the Owl – a reference to the students who founded Swieqi United Football Club.
The 2010–11 Maltese Second Division started in September 2010 and will end in May 2011. St. Patrick and San Gwann were relegated from the 2009–10 Maltese First Division. Zejtun Corinthians, Mgarr United and Naxxar Lions were promoted from 2009–10 Maltese Third Division.
The 2012–13 Maltese Third Division began on 16 September 2012 and ended on 5 May 2013.
The 2015–16 Maltese Second Division started in September 2015 and ended in May 2016. Msida Saint-Joseph F.C., Kirkop United F.C. and Żurrieq F.C. were relegated to the Maltese Third Division. Marsa F.C., Sirens F.C. and Gharghur F.C. were promoted to the Maltese First Division.
The 2013–14 Maltese Third Division began on 12 September 2013 and ended on 27 April 2014.
The University of Malta Students' Futsal Team, known as the University Futsal Team for short, is a futsal team that competes in the Maltese Futsal League. The team previously bore the name of its parent club, Mdina Knights F.C. In 2018, the team won its first silverware in the Maltese Futsal Knockout Cup.
The 2017–18 Maltese FA Trophy was the 80th version of the football tournament. It was sponsored by Boost Diesel, which was revealed during the draws of the first, second and third round of the Maltese FA Trophy at the Trophies Lounge in Malta Football Association headquarters in Ta' Qali. A total of sixty–four clubs participated in this season's cup competition.
The 2018–19 Maltese Second Division is the league competition for the third-tier league in the Maltese football league system. The opening fixture was played on 5 September 2018 and the league season ended on 20 April 2019.
