The county was created in November 1883 when it was carved out of Yakima County. Kittitas County comprises the Ellensburg, Washington, Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The county was organized December 29, 1836, from Ray County and named for Major Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, a soldier from Kentucky who was killed in 1811 at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Yelvington Baptist Church organized on June 30, 1813, about two miles west of its present location in Yelvington, Kentucky, is the oldest Southern Baptist congregation in Daviess County, Kentucky. When organized the church adopted its original name as "Panther Creek Church of Ohio County, near Yellowbanks." This name was adopted because of what is now known as Yelvington was in Ohio County at that time. In 1817 the name was changed to "Rock Spring", and in 1854 the name was changed to "Yelvington Baptist Church" and as remained so ever since. It is the oldest Baptist church in Daviess County.
C. L. Appelgate and Company was a bourbon whiskey distillery established and located in Yelvington, Kentucky. It was owned, built and operated by Colonel C.L. Applegate and his brother Edward Applegate sometime between 1875 and 1880 on the west of the road between Maceo and Yelvington, Kentucky, today known as KY Hwy 405, on land purchased from Sam Taylor Hawes of Yelvington. The company made only bourbon whiskey using the brand names Rosebud and Beechwood.
Yellow Banks, Kentucky, was the name of the rustic community founded by pioneer William Smeathers or Smothers around 1790 on the banks of the Ohio River. The name was derived from the yellowish banks along the river. In 1817, Yellow Banks became the established town of Owensborough, in honor of Col. Abraham Owen.

David Glenn was of Irish descent and was born in 1753, likely in Pennsylvania but possibly in Virginia. He was one of the early settlers of Kentucky having accompanied James Harrod in founding Harrodstown in 1774, along with his older brother, Thomas. Today, Harrodsburg is considered the oldest permanent white settlement in Kentucky, being it was settled almost a full year before Boonesborough.
