Soroti University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SUSMHS), is one of the three schools of Soroti University, one of Uganda's public universities. The school houses the university's medical school, the fifth public medical school in the country. [2]

Location

The school's campus is on the premises of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, in the central business district of the city of Soroti in Soroti District, Eastern Region. This campus is approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [3] The coordinates of the school are 1°42'57.0"N, 33°36'50.0"E (Latitude:1.715833; Longitude:33.613889). [4]

Overview

The school, whose official name is Soroti University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SUSMHS), is organised in over 20 distinct departments, each led by a departmental head. The areas of study include human medicine, nursing, dentistry, biomedical science, pharmacy, and allied health professionals. The objectives of the school include the training of competent health professionals, who will provide the required health care and relieve the disease and morbidity burden in the region and the country. Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), is one of the 10 colleges that constitute Makerere University, East Africa,s oldest university. The college was established in 2007 by consolidating the training offered by the University in the disciplines of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Optometry, Radiography and other health sciences. The college of Health Sciences consists of 5 schools: School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Dentistry and School og Health Sciences. The college provides training in the health sciences at the undergraduate, masters, PhD and post- doctoral levels levels.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
