Southern Pacific 4404 is an EMD SD9E diesel locomotive that was originally built in April 1955 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division for the Southern Pacific Railroad. [1] [4]

History

Revenue service

4404 had begun its life as Southern Pacific SD9 #5428 upon being delivered in 1956 and was first painted in the Southern Pacific's "Black Widow" livery but would be repainted into the Southern Pacific's "Bloody Nose" livery later on in its career. #5428 was later renumbered to #3906 in 1965 by the Southern Pacific's 1965 renumbering plan. [4]

On September 15th, 1975, the Southern Pacific Railroad rebuilt the #3906 into an SD9E and renumbered by the Southern Pacific as #4404 in addition to plumbing and electrical work. [1] The main spotting feature of the upgrade that was given to the 4404 was the addition of a Farr air filter that was located in a Saddle Style box which was located behind the cab and forward of the dynamic brakes. [1] [4]

Retirement and preservation

After running for a total of thirty years of service on the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, on September 18th, 1995, Southern Pacific SD9E #4404 was officially retired from service on the Southern Pacific. The 4404 would eventually be donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum (WPRM) on December 17, 1991. [1] [3] [5]

In 2006, Southern Pacific SD9E #4404 had met up with another former Southern Pacific locomotive at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum which was Southern Pacific SD9E #4450 (also nicknamed "Huff"), this had occurred when #4450 was sold to the WPRM from the Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM) when the GGRM was evicted from Hunters Point back in 2005 and moved to Sunol. [6]

In 2013, Southern Pacific #4404 was declared surplus to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum's collection along with SD9E #4450, [7] and although No. 4450 was scrapped due to its poor condition and lack of alignment control couplers, [7] #4404 was not scrapped and was instead put up for sale for $40,000 (Present day inflation $50251). [7] It remained on sale until Western Rail Inc. decided to purchase the locomotive following an agreement with the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. [8] [9] [10] [2]

The EMD SW1 is a 600-horsepower (450 kW) diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Corporation between December 1938 and November 1953. Final assembly was at EMD's plant at LaGrange (McCook) Illinois. The SW1 was the second generation of 3,402 cu in (55.75 L) switcher from EMD, succeeding the SC and SW. The most significant change from those earlier models was the use of an engine of EMD's own design, the then-new 567 engine, here in 600 hp (450 kW) V6 form. 661 locomotives of this design were built, with a gap in production between March 1943 and September 1945 due to World War II.

The SD7 is a model of 6-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between May 1951 and November 1953. It had an EMD 567B 16-cylinder engine producing 1,500 horsepower (1.12 MW) for its six traction motors. United States railroads bought 188 units.

The EMD SD9 is a model of diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1954 and June 1959. An EMD 567C 16-cylinder engine generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). Externally similar to its predecessor, the SD7, the SD9 was built with the improved and much more maintainable 567C engine.

The BLH AS-616 was a 1,600 horsepower (1,200 kW) C-C diesel-electric locomotive built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton between 1950 and 1954. Nineteen railroads bought 214 locomotives, and two railroads bought seven cabless B units. The AS-616 was valued for its extremely high tractive effort, far more than any comparable ALCo or EMD product. It was used in much the same manner as its four-axle counterpart, the AS-16, and its six-axle sister, the AS-416, though the six-traction motor design allowed better tractive effort at lower speeds.

Southern Pacific 1215 is a preserved 0-6-0 switcher steam locomotive. It was built by Baldwin in 1913, and it was primarily used to switch rolling stock in rail yards, until it was removed from the Southern Pacific's active roster in 1957. It subsequently spent thirty-seven years on static display in Hanford, California until 1995, when it was removed from display while going through a few ownership changes. As of 2022, the locomotive is owned by the California Trolley and Railroad Corporation, and No. 1215 is displayed in San Jose, California.
