"Spit It Out" is a song by American heavy metal band Slipknot, released as the second and final single from the band's 1999 self-titled debut album. [8]
Originally,"Spit It Out" was recorded as the leading track in the 1998 demo of the band's self-titled album. They initially intended to re-record it for the final release, resulting in the faster "over-caffinated" remix, and the slower "Stamp You Out" remix. Unsatisfied with their later attempts, they decided that they "could not capture the magic of [the original] recording" and opted to use the original demo recording in the final release. [9]
Rick Anderson of AllMusic described the song as a "speed rap metal song". [5]
There was a dispute over the release of this song as the band and album's first single. While deciding which track to release, guitarist Mick Thomson and percussionist Shawn Crahan were reportedly very enthusiastic about releasing "Surfacing" as the next single. "Spit It Out" was chosen to be released. The song reached number 28 in the UK Singles Chart. [10] In 2020, Kerrang and Louder Sound both ranked the song number eight on their lists of the greatest Slipknot songs. [11] [12]
A music video was made for "Spit It Out" the video was directed by Thomas Mignone and consists of cuts between a live performance of the song and a band homage of the 1980 horror film The Shining ,with Joey Jordison as Danny Torrance;Shawn Crahan and Chris Fehn as the Grady twins;Corey Taylor as Jack Torrance;Mick Thomson as Lloyd the Bartender;Paul Gray as Harry Derwent;Anthony Stevens as Roger;Craig Jones as Dick Hallorann;James Root as Wendy Torrance;and Sid Wilson as Lorraine Massey. The Shining sequences for the video were shot at the Villa Carlotta,in Hollywood,California, and were art directed by Chris Jordan and Robert Piser. This music video was banned from MTV,for various violent depictions, including Corey Taylor's smashing through a door with an axe (a spoof of the "Here's Johnny!" scene) and the scene wherein James Root viciously assaults Corey Taylor with a bat. A re-edited,less violent version was subsequently aired on MTV. At one point during Slipknot's live performance,a fan can be seen wearing a Soulfly shirt - Taylor would later collaborate with the band for their track "Jumpdafuckup" on their 2000 album Primitive .
"Spit It Out" came out in MTV's return of the rock compilation. [13]
As of December 2023,the music video for "Spit It Out" has over 77 million views on YouTube. [14]

Slipknot is an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines,Iowa,in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, drummer Joey Jordison and bassist Paul Gray. After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade:Crahan,Jordison,Gray,Craig Jones,Mick Thomson,Corey Taylor,Sid Wilson,Chris Fehn, and Jim Root. Bassist Gray died on May 24,2010,and was replaced during 2011–2014 by Donnie Steele. Jordison was dismissed from the band on December 12,2013. Steele left during the recording sessions for .5:The Gray Chapter. The band found replacements in Alessandro Venturella on bass and Jay Weinberg on drums. After the departure of Jordison,as of December 2013 the only founding member in the current lineup is percussionist Crahan. Fehn was also dismissed from the band in March 2019 prior to the writing of We Are Not Your Kind and was replaced by Michael Pfaff. The band parted ways with Jones and Weinberg in 2023.

Later,it was reissued in December 1999 with a slightly-altered track listing and mastering as the result of a lawsuit. It was the first release by the band to be produced by Ross Robinson, who sought to refine Slipknot's sound rather than alter the group's musical direction. This is the only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard who left at the end of recording in late 1998 while the band was taking a brief break. Jim Root, who recorded two tracks at this point, would appear full time on subsequent albums starting with their next album Iowa.

Some band members had already been involved in side projects including Murderdolls,To My Surprise, and the reformation of Stone Sour. In 2003,Slipknot moved into The Mansion to work on the album. Initially, the band was unproductive;lead vocalist Corey Taylor was drinking heavily. Nevertheless, the band managed to write more than enough material for a new album. Vol. 3 is credited as Slipknot's first to incorporate more traditional, melodic song structures, guitar solos and acoustic instruments.

Before the album's launch,Slipknot released a series of promotional images and audio samples from the album through various websites. All Hope Is Gone was considered the band's most eclectic-sounding album at the time of release, incorporating elements from their previous three. The album shows Slipknot moving away from the nu metal genre towards a groove metal style. Songs such as the opening track "Gematria " and the title track espouse the band's more brutal, death metal-influenced edge, reminiscent of songs such as "(sic)" from their debut self-titled album;slow burning,"trippy" elements such as "Gehenna",recalling "Skin Ticket" from their second album Iowa;and more tragic, sentimental tracks such as "Dead Memories" and "Snuff".
