Stephen Mark Hawkins OAM (born 14 January 1971) is an Australian former national champion, World Champion and Olympic gold medal winning lightweight rower.
Hawkins' senior rowing was from the Lindisfarne Rowing Club near Hobart. He commenced contesting the national lightweight single sculls title at the Australian Rowing Championships in 1990, coached by his father Stephen Hawkins Snr. [1] In 1991 he beat out his Tasmanian rival Simon Burgess and claimed his first national lightweight championship in the single sculls. [2] He won that same title at Australian Rowing Championships in 1993 and 1994. [3] In 1992 he placed second behind Peter Antonie in the heavyweight single sculls Australian championship. [4]
From 1989 to 1994 he was the Tasmanian state representative picked to race the President's Cup – the open heavyweight single scull – at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. He won the interstate championship for Tasmania in 1993. [5]
Hawkins first competed at a FISA event at the 1990 World Rowing Championships in his home state of Tasmania – in a lightweight quad scull with Burgess, Gary Lynagh and Bruce Hick. They won the bronze medal. [6] The following year at Vienna 1991 that same crew won gold and a World Championship title. They rowed through the field and won by 0.23 seconds. [7]
In 1992 Hawkins was selected in the Olympic heavyweight double scull with Peter Antonie to compete at Barcelona 1992. Antonie, a veteran of 15 years of international competition was, like Hawkins a lightweight and they were respectively Australia's #1 and #2 ranked scullers ahead of the heavyweights Richard Powell and Jason Day. The selectors felt that Antonie would be unlikely to win the single scull event but using a weight corrected ergo score methodology determined that Antonie and Hawkins together could be competitive in the double. They prepared perfectly, raced superbly and won the Olympic gold. [8] [9]
For Roudnice 1993 and Indianapolis 1994 Hawkins was selected as Australia's lightweight single sculler. He rowed to second place and a silver medal in 1993 behind Great Britain's Peter Haining. In 1994 he finished in twelfth place. [8] [10]
Hawkins was inducted into the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame in 2003. [11]
Peter Thomas AntonieOAM is an Australian former rower. He is an Olympic and Commonwealth games gold medallist and world champion. He is regarded as one of Australia's greatest ever rowers figuring in senior representative squads consistently from 1977 to 1996 and representing Australia on eighteen occasions at three Olympics and fifteen World Rowing Championships. He competed at the highest levels as both a sculler and a sweep oarsman, in both lightweight and open divisions, across all boat classes. He won twenty-nine Australian national championship titles in his career.
Duncan Seth Free is a retired Australian rower and Olympic gold medallist. He is 4-time Olympian and two-time world champion who represented Australia at four world rowing championships in both sculls and sweep oared boats. He was a six-time Australian national sculling champion.
Anthony John Edwards is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a five time Olympian, triple Olympic medallist, a world champion and a six-time Australian national champion. He represented Australia at the premier world regattas consistently over a twenty-year period from 1993 to 2012.
The Australian Rowing Championships is an annual rowing event that determines Australia's national rowing champions and facilitates selection of Australian representative crews for World Championships and the Olympic Games. It is Australia's premier regatta, with states, clubs and schools sending their best crews. The Championships commence with the National Regatta - men's, women's and lightweight events in open, under 23, under 19, under 17 and school age events. Rowers at the National Regatta race in their local club colours with composite crews permitted. The Championships conclude with the Interstate Regatta - currently eight events competed by state representative crews or scullers selected by the state rowing associations. The states compete for an overall points tally which decides the Zurich Cup.
Darren Bruce Balmforth is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a twelve-time Australian national champion, a world champion and an Olympic silver medallist.
Simon Burgess is an Australian national champion, two-time World Champion, three-time Olympian and dual Olympic silver medal-winning lightweight rower. He represented Australia ten times at World Rowing Championships between 1990 and 2002. He won world and national championships in both sculls and in sweep-oared boat classes during an eighteen-year elite level career.
Paul Reedy is an Australian former rower. He is a dual Olympian, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medalist who competed over a seventeen-year period at the elite level. He was a fourteen-time Australian national champion across both sculling and sweep-oared boats and then coached six Australian crews to national championship titles. He later coached at the London Rowing Club and was appointed as British national Head Coach from 2009. He took Great Britain's lightweight women's sculling crews to Olympic and World Championship gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
Bruce Hick is an Australian national champion, three time World Champion and dual Olympian lightweight rower. He represented Australia over a fifteen-year period and rowed at ten World Rowing Championships.
Rebecca Susan Joyce is an Australian former rower, a sculler in the lightweight division. She was a five-time national champion, a 1995 world champion and Olympic medal winner.
Virginia Lee is an Australian former rower. She was a four-time national champion, a 1992 world champion, a dual Olympian and an Olympic bronze medallist who competed in both sweep oared and sculling events in the lightweight division.
Lyall McCarthy OAM is a former Australian national champion lightweight rower and national rowing coach. He has coached Australian crews to gold medals at the World Rowing Championships and the Olympic Games.
Simon Gillett is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a two-time world champion, was a selector of Australian Olympic and world championship representative crews and is a former head coach of Australian rowing.
Gary Joseph James Lynagh is an eleven time Australian national champion, three time World Champion and Olympian lightweight rower. He represented Australia at every premier international regatta from 1990 to 1998.
Alister Foot is an Australian world champion lightweight rower. He won a gold medal at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled in the lightweight men's eight.
Adair Janelle Ferguson is an Australian former World Champion lightweight rower. She became Australia's first female world champion rower in 1985 in only her second year of rowing.
Deon Birtwistle is an Australian lightweight rower. He was three times a national champion, an U23 World Champion and a silver medallist at the 2003 World Championships. He continued to compete at the national elite level into his 40s.
Georgia Nesbitt is an Australian former representative lightweight rower who made 10 representative appearaances for Australia between 2013 and 2022. She was an seven-time national champion and she won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In 2022 prior to a serious cycling accident, she competed in Australian Road National championships and had qualified to participate in her age group at the 2023 Ironman World Championships in Helsinki.
Stephen Spurling is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was an Australian national representative at four World Rowing Championships. He won a silver medal at the 1983 World Rowing Championships.
