Sunayana Kachroo is an Indian-American poet, film-writer, lyricist and a columnist. [1]

Education

Sunayana Kachroo was born and raised in Kashmir, India into a Kashmiri Pandit family. She received her education in Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra, and earned a master’s in computer science from Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune. [2] Her father, Chaman Kachroo, was also a poet known for his Urdu Nazm titled Charcha. [3]

Career

In 2000, Sunayana moved to the US and began working as an analyst in New York City. [1] [2] Her first book, Waqt Se Pare- Beyond Time, was published in 2013. [2]

Sunayana entered into dialogue writing and creative production with Half Widow , a 2017 Indian drama film. [1] [4] She served as an associate producer for The Illegal, an American drama released in 2021, starring Suraj Sharma, Shweta Tripathi, and Adil Hussain. [5] The illegal was shortlisted for nominations for the Best Picture Category at the Academy Awards 2019. [6] Sunayana also wrote dialogues for short films like In Search of America, Inshallah, [7] [8] and The Good News. [9] [10] Additionally, she co-wrote the film Songs of Paradise featuring Saba Azad, Soni Razdan, and Lillete Dubey. [11]

She has also written lyrics for songs sung by artists like Sonu Nigam, Shankar Mahadevan, [12] Ali Sethi, Sunidhi Chauhan, Hariharan, Harshdeep Kaur, Rashmeet Kaur, Anuradha Palakurthi, Jasraj Joshi, Hrishikesh Ranade, and Archana Kamath. [1] [7]

Sunayana developed an interest in poetry at the age of 15, trying different forms like Kavita, English Poems, Nazms, and Dohe. [7] She started as a featured poet at the South Asian Institute of Harvard in 2014 and later shared the stage with Punjabi poet Nirupama Dutt at the Bangalore Literature Festival. [13] Since 2015, she has been a featured poet at the annual South Asian Poetry reading at Harvard University hosted by the South Asian Institute. [14] [15]

In 2022, she launched a new collection of poems called Sunny Side Up, which received reviews from Shashi Tharoor, Subhash Kak, and Lopa Banerjee, [7] and an NFT poem named Home and Homeless, [1] after which she was invited to the US Capitol Hill to recite her poems. Sunayana has participated in poetry shows globally and recited her poems at various venues, including Jose Mateo's Ballet Theatre, Harvard University, NECA awards, Indian Consulate NYC, Lalded Ke lal-vakh, and Hindu Heritage Day in 2015. Notable events included her poetry showcase at the U.S Capitol hill. [1] [16]

In 2023, she released the song Tum Kehte Ho, sung and produced by Sunidhi Chauhan. [17]

Literature of Kashmir has a long history, the oldest texts having been composed in the Sanskrit language. Early names include Patanjali, the author of the Mahābhāṣya commentary on Pāṇini's grammar, suggested by some to have been the same to write the Hindu treatise known as the Yogasutra, and Dridhbala, who revised the Charaka Samhita of Ayurveda.

His collections include A Walk Through the Yellow Pages, The Half-Inch Himalayas,A Nostalgist's Map of America, The Country Without a Post Office, and Rooms Are Never Finished, the latter a finalist for the National Book Award in 2001.

He is especially noted for introducing a new style into Kashmiri poetry and for expanding Kashmiri poetry into previously unexplored thematic realms. Mahjoor is recognized as father of Kashmiri language.

Rasul Mir also known as Rasul Mir Shahabadi, was a romantic poet of Kashmir in the 19th century. He was born at Doru Shahabad, a historic town in Anantnag district of Kashmir. He is often referred to as imām-e-ishqiya shairi' for his literary contribution to Kashmiri romanticism. Mir was said to have been alive in around 1855 when Mahmud Gami and Swoch Kral sa'eb died. He died a few years before Maqbool Shah Kralawari. Though, Muhammad Y. Taing, in his book کلیاتِ رسول میر mentions of a document from Revenue Department, Anantnag, dated 5 April 1889, acknowledging Rasul Mir as a muqdam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rehman Rahi</span> Kashmiri poet (1925–2023)

Abdur Rehman Rahi was an Kashmiri poet, translator and critic. He was awarded the Indian Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for his poetry collection Nawroz-i-Saba, the Padma Shri in 2000, and India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith Award in 2007. He is the first Kashmiri writer to be awarded the Jnanpith, India's highest literary award for his poetic collection Siyah Rood Jaeren Manz. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2000 by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.

"Sheila Ki Jawani" is an Indian Hindi-language song sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Vishal Dadlani featuring Katrina Kaif along with Akshay Kumar in the 2010 Bollywood film Tees Maar Khan. The music is composed by composer duo Vishal–Shekhar and the lyrics are penned by Dadlani. The moves were choreographed by choreographer-director Farah Khan, who went on to win the Filmfare award for best choreography for the film.

Begum Zaffar Ali, née Sahibzaadi Syeda Fatima, was an Indian women's rights activist and the first woman matriculate of the Indian state of Kashmir and Jammu who went on to become Inspector of Schools in Kashmir. She was an educationist, women's liberation activist, deputy director of education and later a legislator in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. She was associated with the activities of the All India Women's Conference and was its secretary before partition, but a chance meeting with Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his sister, Fatima Jinnah in Kashmir, who would later visit the family for banquets, influenced her and she left the conference to concentrate her efforts in women's liberation movements in the pre-independent India.

<i>Half Widow</i> 2017 Indian film

Half Widow is a 2017 Indian drama film directed by debutant Danish Renzu and written by Renzu and Gaya Bhola. The film tells the story of a woman from Srinagar in Kashmir, who tries to find her husband who is abducted by the Indian army. Jointly produced by Bhola and Renzu, the film stars Neelofar Hamid, Shahnawaz Bhat, Mir Sarwar and Haseena Sofi. Because there are no theaters in Kashmir, the film was screened at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre. The title of the film refers to the namesake term used for Kashmiri women whose husbands have disappeared mostly in custody of security forces in the Kashmir conflict. The film's official trailer was released in May 2017. The characters in the film talk in Urdu, with some Kashmiri. The film received a favourable review on Cineblitz. The film was released theatrically on 6 January 2020 in India.

Danish Renzu is an Indian born Los Angeles based film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is also the Founder of Renzu Films. Renzu is best known for directing and producing films like Half Widow, The illegal, and Songs of Paradise featuring Saba Azad, Soni Razdan, Lillete Dubey, currently in post production.

Ae Watan is an Indian patriotic Hindi song from the soundtrack of the 2018 Bollywood film Raazi. The song is sung by Arijit Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan. Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy composed the music, and Gulzar and Allama Iqbal wrote the lyrics. The music video for the song stars Sehmat Khan.

Songs Of Paradise is a musical drama set in Kashmir, directed by Danish Renzu whose last directorial was The Illegal. The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Shafat Qazi and Danish Renzu, with a screenplay by Danish Renzu, Sunayana Kachroo and dialogues by Niranjan Iyengar. The lead role is played by Saba Azad, an actress and singer known for her appearances in movies such as Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge and Nautanki Saala. The film also stars Zain Khan Durrani, Soni Razdan, Taaruk Raina, Lillete Dubey, Sheeba Chaddha, Shishir Sharma, and Lalit Parimoo. This story follows the journey of a Kashmiri woman who dreams of becoming a singer, inspired by the music of Raj Begum. Raj Begum, known as the Melody Queen of Kashmir, was a Padma Shri awardee and a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Mohammad Muneem Nazir is an Indian singer, songwriter and poet who sings and writes in the Kashmiri, Urdu and Hindi languages. Hailing from Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley, Muneem founded of Alif, in 2008. Mohammad Muneem (alif) is known for making music that combines Kashmiri traditional and folk styles with western and contemporary genres.

Aabha Hanjura is an Indian singer, songwriter and composer who sings primarily in the Kashmiri and Hindi languages, as well as in Punjabi, Dogri and other languages. Hanjura is the lead vocalist of pop band Sufistication, which she founded in 2012. An indie artist, she is known for music that blends Kashmiri and other Indian folk and Sufi styles with contemporary pop music.
