Urdu poetry is a tradition of poetry and has many different forms. Today, it is an important part of the culture of India and Pakistan. According to Naseer Turabi there are five major poets of Urdu: Mir Taqi Mir (d.1810), Mirza Ghalib, Mir Anees (d.1874), Muhammad Iqbal and Josh Malihabadi (d.1982). The language of Urdu reached its pinnacle under the British Raj, and it received official status. All famous writers of Urdu language including Ghalib and Iqbal were given British scholarships. Following the Partition of India in 1947, it found major poets and scholars were divided along the nationalistic lines. However, Urdu poetry is cherished in both the nations. Both the Muslims and Hindus from across the border continue the tradition.
Brij Narayan Chakbast, also spelled as Brij Narain Chakbast, was an Indian Urdu poet.
Chaudhary Abdul Hayee Gujjar, popularly known by his pen name (takhallus) Sahir Ludhianvi, was an Indian poet who wrote primarily in Urdu in addition to Hindi. He is regarded as one of the greatest film lyricist and poets of 20th century India.
Jan Nisar Akhtar was an Indian poet of Urdu ghazals and nazms, and a part of the Progressive Writers' Movement, who was also a lyricist for Bollywood.
Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad, known by his pen name as Mahjoor, was a poet of the Kashmir Valley, along with contemporaries, Zinda Kaul, Abdul Ahad Azad, and Dinanath Nadim. He is especially noted for introducing a new style into Kashmiri poetry and for expanding Kashmiri poetry into previously unexplored thematic realms. Mahjoor is recognized as father of Kashmiri language.
Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli, known as Nida Fazli, was a prominent Indian Urdu and Hindi poet, lyricist and dialogue writer. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 by the government of India for his contribution to literature.
Hasrat Jaipuri, born Iqbal Hussain, was an Indian poet, who wrote in the Hindi and Urdu languages. He was also a renowned film lyricist in Hindi films, where he won the Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist twice – in 1966 and 1972.
Abdur Rehman Rahi was an Kashmiri poet, translator and critic. He was awarded the Indian Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for his poetry collection Nawroz-i-Saba, the Padma Shri in 2000, and India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith Award in 2007. He is the first Kashmiri writer to be awarded the Jnanpith, India's highest literary award for his poetic collection Siyah Rood Jaeren Manz. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2000 by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
Muzaffar Warsi was a Pakistani poet, essayist, lyricist, and a scholar of Urdu. He began writing more than five decades ago. He wrote a rich collection of na`ats, as well as several anthologies of ghazals and nazms, and his autobiography Gaye Dinon Ka Suraagh. He also wrote quatrains for Pakistan's daily newspaper Nawa-i-Waqt.
Akhtar ul Iman was a noted Urdu poet and screenwriter in Hindi cinema, who had a major influence on modern Urdu nazm.
Fayyaz Hashmi was a Pakistani poet and screenwriter who worked both in the Indian and Pakistani film industry.
Half Widow is a 2017 Indian drama film directed by debutant Danish Renzu and written by Renzu and Gaya Bhola. The film tells the story of a woman from Srinagar in Kashmir, who tries to find her husband who is abducted by the Indian army. Jointly produced by Bhola and Renzu, the film stars Neelofar Hamid, Shahnawaz Bhat, Mir Sarwar and Haseena Sofi. Because there are no theaters in Kashmir, the film was screened at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre. The title of the film refers to the namesake term used for Kashmiri women whose husbands have disappeared mostly in custody of security forces in the Kashmir conflict. The film's official trailer was released in May 2017. The characters in the film talk in Urdu, with some Kashmiri. The film received a favourable review on Cineblitz. The film was released theatrically on 6 January 2020 in India.
Liaqat Jafri is an Indian poet, scholar and researcher of Urdu. He has authored books and serves as editor of Alla Taleem magazine, published by Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. He represented Jammu and Kashmir in International Festivals and Mushairas held in UAE, South Asia and elsewhere. His poems have gone viral including his popular poem about Narendra Modi. He writes songs for Bollywood movies.
Danish Renzu is an Indian born Los Angeles based film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is also the founder of Renzu Films. Renzu is best known for directing and producing films like Half Widow, The illegal, and Songs of Paradise featuring Saba Azad, Soni Razdan, Lillete Dubey, currently in post production.
Ghulam Ahmad Fazil Kashmiri was a Kashmiri poet and lyricist. He was involved in Arabic, English, Persian, Urdu and particularly in Kashmiri literature. His uncertain work includes thirty six books published in various genres such as ghazal, nazm, rubaʿi, qata, marsiya, munajat, naʽat, manqabat and leela among others.
"Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang" is an Urdu nazm by Faiz Ahmad Faiz. The song is popular through its rendition by singer Noor Jehan and has been notably performed by many others. According to Faiz, the nazm also marks his transition from romantic work of his earlier years to mature works of his later years.
Coke Studio Bharat is an Indian music series that's part of the international franchise, Coke Studio. It features live studio recordings by various artists, showcasing a diverse range of music. This includes classical genres from India like Hindustani, Carnatic, Indian folk, alongside hip hop, rock, and pop music.
Mohammad Muneem Nazir is an Indian singer, songwriter and poet who sings and writes in the Kashmiri, Urdu and Hindi languages. Hailing from Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley, Muneem founded of Alif, in 2008. He is known for making music that combines Kashmiri traditional and folk styles with western and contemporary genres.
Aabha Hanjura is an Indian singer, songwriter and composer who sings primarily in the Kashmiri and Hindi languages, as well as in Punjabi, Dogri and other languages. Hanjura is the lead vocalist of pop band Sufistication, which she founded in 2012. An indie artist, she is known for music that blends Kashmiri and other Indian folk and Sufi styles with contemporary pop music.
Rashmeet Kaur is an Indian singer, composer, and songwriter known for her songs Nadiyon Paar (Roohi), Jadi Buti, and Ishq Nachaawe.
