The Supermarine Nighthawk or P.B.31E was a First World War British aircraft, designed by Noel Pemberton Billing and built at Woolston, Southampton after Pemberton Billing's company became Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd. The P.B.31E, as with its predecessor the P.B.29 "Battle Plane", was an anti-Zeppelin night fighter. It was operated by a crew of three to five, and was designed to fly for 9 to 18 hours. The prototype of the P.B.31E flew in February 1917. It quickly became obsolete when it was found that Zeppelins could be more easily be destroyed by igniting their hydrogen bags using explosive bullets. Only a prototype aircraft was built.
The Nighthawk was developed to counter the threat of bombing raids by German Zeppelins against the UK during the First World War. [1] In 1916, the British Member of Parliament and aviator Noel Pemberton Billing published Air War: How To Wage It, which included promotion of the use of aircraft as a defensive measure against Zeppelins. [2] He wrote: [3]
[Each machine must].. also carry a searchlight driven independently of the engines. It must have at least a speed of 80 m.p.h. [130km/h] to overtake airships... It must be able to carry fuel for 12hr cruising at low speed to enable it to chase an airship to the coast. It must be able to climb to 10,000ft in not more than 20min... The engines must be silenced. The pilots must have a clear-view arc of fire above, in front and below. All the above requirements are within the capacity of any competent aeroplane designer.

Pemberton Billing, who owned the small aircraft company based at Woolston, Southampton, was asked by the British government to design and build a slow aircraft capable of attacking an airborne Zeppelin. [1] He responded to the government's request by personally designing a quadruplane aircraft according to the recommendations of Air War: How To Wage It, which was designated as the P.B.29E. [2] [a] The quadruplane configuration was required, as the wing surface area needed to be large enough to lift the aeroplane to the same altitude of a Zeppelin. [6] It had two cockpits (in front and behind the wings) that had dual controls, as well as a tailplane and three rudders. The two propellers were driven by 90- horsepower (67 kW ) Austro-Daimler engines. A crew member armed with a Lewis gun was in an enclosed position above the third wing. [5]
The P.B.29E was delivered to the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) station at Chingford, Essex, where it underwent tests on 1 January 1916 and received a somewhat critical report. [7] Shortly after the completion of the RNAS trials, the aircraft accidentally crashed at Chingford. After it was written off, the wreckage was returned to Woolston. [6] The design of the P.B.29E was thought by the RNAS to be good enough to be developed further and an order to construct two improved machines was given. [8]
The improved version of the P.B.29E was called the P.B.31E. [9] Drawings of the new aircraft dating from July to November 1916 have the initials of Reginald Mitchell, who become its chief designer. [b] Mitchell is best known for designing racing seaplanes such as the Supermarine S.6B and for leading the team that designed the Supermarine Spitfire. [11] [12]
The P.B.31E incorporated the quadraplane wings and tailplane of its predecessor. [8] It was powered by two 100 hp (75 kW) Anzani 9-cylinder radial engines. [13] It was designed for long-lasting flights, with patrols occurring at low speeds whilst a Zeppelin was being hunted. [14] It had a trainable nose-mounted searchlight to detect enemy aircraft. A 1½-pounder (37 mm) Davis gun was mounted above the top wing with 20 shells and it carried two .303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis guns. Power for the searchlight was provided by an independent petrol engine-driven generator made by ABC Motors, possibly the first instance of a recognisable airborne auxiliary power unit. [9] The comfort of the crew was considered in the design; the cockpit was enclosed and heated and sleeping quarters were provided in the form of a bunk. [15] The Admiralty ordered two aircraft of the type but only number 1388, was built. [9]
The Nighthawk (as it became known) first flew in February 1917, eight months after Pemberton Billing Ltd. had been sold to the airman and entrepreneur Hubert Scott-Paine and renamed the Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd. The aircraft was tested by the American test pilot Clifford B. Prodger. [16] During trials at Eastchurch, Kent, Prodger managed to reach a speed of 75 mph (121 km/h) and attained a landing speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). [9]
The Nighthawk's lack of power meant that it took an hour to attain an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,000 m). [6] It finally became obsolete when it was found that Zeppelins could be destroyed using explosive bullets fired from a more lightly armed aircraft, which caused the oxygen-rich hydrogen bags to ignite. [6] The Nighthawk was scrapped in July 1917. [17] One of the aircraft's propellers is preserved at Solent Sky, an aviation museum in Southampton.[ citation needed ]

Supermarine was a British aircraft manufacturer. It is most famous for producing the Spitfire fighter plane during World War II. It also built a range of seaplanes and flying boats, winning the Schneider Trophy for seaplanes with three wins in a row in 1927, 1929 and 1931. After the war, the company produced a series of jet fighters.
Reginald Joseph Mitchell was a British aircraft designer who worked for the Southampton aviation company Supermarine from 1916 until 1936. He is best known for designing racing seaplanes such as the Supermarine S.6B, and for leading the team that designed the Supermarine Spitfire.
The Supermarine Spiteful was a British fighter aircraft designed by Supermarine during the Second World War as a successor to the Spitfire. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, it had a radical new wing design to allow safe operations at higher speeds and incorporating inwards-retracting undercarriage. Other changes included a larger fin to improve the marginal stability of Griffon Spitfires. Development of the wing was formalised by Air Ministry specification F.1/43; as well as a new aircraft, there was an expectation the wing could be used as a replacement for the elliptical wing on Spitfire production.

The Supermarine S.6 is a 1920s British single-engined single-seat racing seaplane built by Supermarine and designed by its chief designer, R.J. Mitchell, who refined the earlier Supermarine S.5 to produce a larger, more powerful aircraft. Two aircraft, N247 and N248, were built to participate in the 1929 Schneider Trophy contest. Rolls-Royce produced the R engine for the new all-metal aircraft. The engine's initial issues—such as the short time between overhauls and the heat generated when the engine power was increased to 1,900 hp (1,400 kW)—were resolved within a few months before the aircraft were completed at Supermarine’s works at Woolston, Southampton.
The Armstrong Whitworth F.K.10 was a British two-seat quadruplane fighter aircraft built by Armstrong Whitworth during the First World War. While it was ordered in small numbers for the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service, it was not used operationally. It is one of the few quadruplane aircraft to reach production.

The Supermarine Seamew was a British twin engined amphibious aircraft built by Supermarine at their works in Woolston, Southampton. It was intended as a small, shipborne reconnaissance aircraft. It was designed in 1925–1927 by R. J. Mitchell to meet the Air Ministry's specification 29/24. It was the first aeroplane built by Supermarine to incorporate metal in the construction; two machines were built. Mitchell planned a civilian version of the aircraft, to accommodate up to six passengers.
The Supermarine Sparrow was a British two-seat light biplane designed by R.J. Mitchell and built at Supermarine's works at Woolston, Southampton. It first flew on 11 September 1924. After being rebuilt in 1926 as a parasol monoplane, it was re-designated Sparrow II.

Supermarine Spitfire variants powered by early model Rolls-Royce Merlin engines mostly utilised single-speed, single-stage superchargers. The British Supermarine Spitfire was the only Allied fighter aircraft of the Second World War to fight in front line service from the beginnings of the conflict, in September 1939, through to the end in August 1945. Post-war, the Spitfire's service career continued into the 1950s. The basic airframe proved to be extremely adaptable, capable of taking far more powerful engines and far greater loads than its original role as a short-range interceptor had called for. This would lead to 19 marks of Spitfire and 52 sub-variants being produced throughout the Second World War, and beyond. The many changes were made in order to fulfil Royal Air Force requirements and to successfully engage in combat with ever-improving enemy aircraft. With the death of the original designer, Reginald J. Mitchell, in June 1937, all variants of the Spitfire were designed by his successor, Joseph Smith, and a team of engineers and draftsmen.
The Supermarine Baby was a First World War fighter aircraft that was the earliest example of a single-seat flying boat fighter to be built in the United Kingdom. It was designed by Supermarine to meet a 1917 Navy Board specification which stipulated the aircraft have a speed of 95 knots, a ceiling of 20,000 feet (6,100 m), and be capable of being launched from ships at sea. When it first flew in February 1918 it was one of the smallest and fastest flying boats then in existence.
The Supermarine Air Yacht was a British luxury passenger-carrying flying boat. It was designed by Supermarine's chief designer R. J. Mitchell and built in Woolston, Southampton in 1929. It was commissioned by the brewing magnate Ernest Guinness, and was the first British flying yacht built to the order of a private owner. Only one machine was built.
The Supermarine Nanok was a British three-engined biplane flying boat built by Supermarine. Built to meet a Royal Danish Navy requirement, the single prototype was rebuilt as a private air yacht and renamed the Supermarine Solent.
The Rolls-Royce Griffon engine was designed in answer to Royal Navy specifications for an engine capable of generating good power at low altitudes. Concepts for adapting the Spitfire to take the new engine had begun as far back as October 1939; Joseph Smith felt that "The good big 'un will eventually beat the good little 'un." and Ernest Hives of Rolls-Royce thought that the Griffon would be "a second power string for the Spitfire". The first of the Griffon-engined Spitfires flew on 27 November 1941.
The Davis gun was the first true recoilless gun developed and taken into service. It was developed by Commander Cleland Davis of the United States Navy in 1910, just prior to World War I.
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II.
