Tara Teng (born August 17, 1988) [1] , Chinese name Oi Kwan [2] is a Canadian former pageant winner. She was crowned Miss Canada 2011 and also Miss World Canada 2012. During her title reigns she was an advocate for human rights and spoke about human trafficking.

Contents

Early life and education

Teng is the daughter of a Chinese Singaporean church pastor father and a European Canadian mother, and she was raised as a Christian. [3] She was homeschooled until the age of 15. [4] She received a Bachelor of Education from Trinity Western University (TWU). [5] [6]

Teng spent four months studying at TWU's Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC) in Ottawa, participating in the Laurentian Leadership Program. [7] [8] While in Ottawa, she had a year-long internship with Joy Smith, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kildonan—St. Paul in Winnipeg, who had been working to implement laws to reduce the demand for prostitution in Canada and on improving awareness about human trafficking. [9]

Pageants

In 2010 Teng won the Miss BC World contest [10] [11] and the pageant's online People's Choice Award. [12] In 2011, she was crowned Miss Canada. [13] She won the Miss World Canada pageant in 2012, and represented Canada at the 2012 Miss World pageant, [4] although she did not place as a finalist in the Beauty with a Purpose segment of the competition [14] or as a top 30 quarter-finalist. [15]

Activism

In Canada

Teng was inspired to begin working against human trafficking when, at age 16, she moved to suburban Vancouver and met a neighbour whose daughter had been lost to human trafficking when she was 14 and prostituted by the girl's then-boyfriend. [16]

In October 2010, Teng met with Canada's Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to discuss human trafficking. [17] In November 2011, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton, Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, hosted a reception in Teng's honour, at which she gave a speech to Senators and MPs about human trafficking. [7]

Teng participated in "Buying Sex is Not a Sport", a campaign during the 2010 Winter Olympics. [12] After participating in Toronto's second annual Freedom Walk in March 2011, she organized the Freedom Week campaign in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia with Todd Hauptman. [5] [13] [18] That August, she participated in the Ignite the Road to Justice Mission Tour, beginning in Vancouver. [19] [20] The tour continued across the country eastwards. [17]

Teng participated in an anti-human trafficking task force in her hometown of Langley, British Columbia, producing a report on measures the community could do to tackle it. [21] In April 2012, Teng and Hauptman presented Langley Township with an "action plan" and asked the township to accept the plan's first two stages, dealing with prevention and education. [22] [23]

Teng partnered with World Vision International [24] to give speeches at events raising funds for International Justice Mission, which rescues children from brothels. [25] [26]

In Asia

In June 2011, [27] Teng visited towns and slums in Cambodia and Thailand where families had sold their daughters to sexual slavery. [17] [20] [28] These included Patpong, Thailand where she partnered with Rahab Ministries Thailand to spend time with female human trafficking survivors. [29] In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Teng spoke to an audience of 40,000 people at the MTV Freedom Concert in support of MTV EXIT, a campaign to end human trafficking and exploitation. [9] [30] The Cambodia trip was supported by the advocacy group Traffic Jam [9] and World Orphans. [30]

In February 2012, Teng was a keynote speaker at the Freedom and Honor Conference in Seoul. [28] Later in the year, she travelled to Sri Lanka. There, she visited World Vision's development programs in Thanamalvila Divisional Secretariat and Bogawantalawa to help fundraising efforts. [31]

Post-pageant life

Teng currently works as a life and style blogger and is the B.C. director of the Joy Smith Foundation, an organization which serves to combat human trafficking and help survivors. [16] [32] She also works as a spiritual embodiment coach in Vancouver working within the 'Deconstructing Faith movement'. [33] Her book, Your Body is a Revolution: Healing Our Relationships with Our Bodies, Each Other and the Earth was published in 2023. [34]

Honours

In 2011, Chatelaine named her one of Canada's "Hot 20 Under 30" women. [35] In 2012 she was one of 30 Langley residents to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. [24] That same year the Joy Smith Foundation recognised her work in human rights by giving her its International Freedom Award, [25] and she was added to the Catalyst Conference's Young Influencers List. [36]

Personal life

Teng married husband Chris Yamauchi in May 2013. [37] They had two children together. [32] [38] In November 2019, she announced that her marriage had ended and she had been living as a single mother for a full year. [39]

Since her divorce, Teng has come out as bisexual. [40] She left mainstream Christianity due to the scrutiny she faced as an Asian bisexual woman. [33]

In November 2021, she announced that she and her fiancé Anthony Lively are expecting a child in 2022. [41]

Miss Earth is an annual international major beauty pageant based in the Philippines that advocates for environmental awareness, conservation and social responsibility. Along with Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss International, it is one of the Big Four beauty pageants.

Miss Canada is a beauty pageant for young women in Canada. It was founded in Hamilton in 1946. No title was awarded from 1993 through 2008. The trademark was purchased in 2009 by a Québec organization who produces the pageant under the name to this day. According to the new Miss Canada and Miss Teen Canada web site, the title was re-established with a focus on personality over physical appearance. The Miss Canada competition is Canada's oldest extant beauty pageant.

The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria – often abbreviated as MBGN – is a pageant organised by Silverbird Group with the main purpose of sending representatives to international competitions. Originally known as Miss Universe Nigeria, it was renamed Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria after news publishers Daily Times lost their license to send delegates from rival contest Miss Nigeria to Miss World. Since 2005, the pageant has produced multiple representatives, but the MBGN World recipient is considered the overall winner. Miss Universe Nigeria was reestablished in 2023, breaking away from MBGN and operating as an entirely different pageant.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking</span> Canadian action plan established in 2012

The National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking is a four-year action plan that was established by the Government of Canada on June 6, 2012 to oppose human trafficking in Canada. In 2004, the government's Interdepartmental Working Group on Trafficking in Persons was mandated to create a national anti-human-trafficking plan, but the mandate went unfulfilled despite reminders from politicians and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Member of Parliament (MP) Joy Smith put forward motion C-153 in February 2007 to put a plan in place, and the House of Commons passed it unanimously. Smith began developing a proposal and released it in September 2010 under the title "Connecting the Dots". University of British Columbia law professor Benjamin Perrin helped guide Smith's writing of the proposal. Before the establishment of the NAP-CHT, a variety of people and organizations—including the 2009 and 2010 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Reports of the United States Department of State—criticized Canada for failing to have such a plan.

Timea Nagy is a Canadian activist who has spoken on behalf of victims of human trafficking. She founded Walk With Me, a Toronto-based organization that aids survivors of trafficking. Nagy was featured in an anti-trafficking campaign by the Salvation Army in 2009. Her activism has drawn upon her own experience of forced prostitution in Canada.

Mr. World Canada is a Canadian male beauty pageant that runs in parallel with the Miss World Canada pageant, the two sending their winners to compete in the Mister World and Miss World pageants respectively.

Miss India Worldwide is a beauty pageant which draws contestants from India and from among members of the Indian diaspora residing in other countries. It is conducted by India Festival Committee (IFC), first founded and headed by Dharmatma Saran in New York City, USA.

Francesco "Frankie" Anthony Cena is a Canadian television presenter, musician and debate coach. He was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He is known for being Mister World Canada in 2012, competing at Mister World that same year, and for later co-hosting multiple Mr. World and Miss World competitions.

Jessica Simpson, commonly known by her former legal name, Jessica Yaniv, is a Canadian transgender activist in British Columbia who is best known for filing at least 15 complaints of discrimination on the basis of gender identity against various beauty salons after they refused to wax her male genitalia. The complaints were filed with the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal in 2018 and 2019. It was the first major case of alleged transgender discrimination in retail in Canada. In 2019, the Tribunal rejected her complaints and ruled Yaniv had racist motives. In following years, Yaniv has gone on to make additional complaints of discrimination, libel and privacy breach.

Courage Productions runs the Miss BC pageant, including the Mrs. BC, Miss Teen BC, and Miss Charity BC titles. It was founded in Langley in 2002 by Darren Storsley. The final pageant night is televised by Shaw TV. The pageant has not been held since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
