Tarsia is a town and comune in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of southern Italy. The ancient town of Caprasia is thought to be the modern Tarsia.

Geography

The municipality borders with Bisignano, Corigliano Calabro, Roggiano Gravina, San Demetrio Corone, San Lorenzo del Vallo, San Marco Argentano, Santa Sofia d'Epiro, Spezzano Albanese and Terranova da Sibari.

History

During World War II, Benito Mussolini built Italy's largest fascist concentration camp there, the Ferramonti internment camp. Imprisoned there were mainly Jews and ethnic minorities considered as enemies by the fascist regime. The camp was liberated by the British on September 14, 1943.

Ferramonti di Tarsia, also known as Ferramonti, was an Italian internment camp used to intern political dissidents and ethnic minorities. It was located in the municipality of Tarsia, near Cosenza, in Calabria. It was the largest of the fifteen internment camps established by Benito Mussolini between June and September 1940. Over 3,800 Jews were imprisoned at the camp.

Delegation for the Assistance of Jewish Emigrants or DELASEM, was an Italian and Jewish resistance organization that worked in Italy between 1939 and 1947. It is estimated that during World War II, DELASEM was able to distribute more than $1,200,000 in aid, of which nearly $900,000 came from outside Italy.

Ernst Bernhard (1896-1965) was a German Jungian psychoanalyst, pediatrician and astrologer. Refused asylum by Britain in 1935, he lived in Rome, Italy from 1936 onwards. Following the fascist Italian racial laws of 1938, Bernhard was sent to the internment camp, Ferramonti di Tarsia, in Calabria where he remained until the liberation of the camp by the Allies in September 1943.
