The Cleanest War is the debut extended play by American metallic hardcore band Morning Again. It was released on May 15, 1996, by American record label Conquer the World Records, initially on compact disc, and subsequently on 12" vinyl and digitally. [2] [3] [4]
The release was recorded with vocalist Damien Moyal, guitarists John Wylie and Michael Wolz, bass guitarist Eric Ervin and drummer Louie Long. In promotion of the release, the band toured the United States and Canada during the summer of 1996, playing with such bands as Hot Water Music, Bane, Elliott, 108, Inquisition, Rye Coalition and Fury of Five. [5] [6] [7] Moyal and Ervin were fired from the band shortly after returning home from the tour. [6] [7] [8]
The material recorded for The Cleanest War was the basis of several Morning Again compilation albums over the years, including Hand of Hope for Good Life Recordings, [1] Hand of the Martyr for Eulogy Recordings and Alveran Records, [9] and I for Demons Run Amok Entertainment; it was also re-issued by Stick to the Core in 2022. [10]
Morning Again was formed in November 1995, by guitarist and principle songwriter John Wylie and drummer Louie Long. [11] [5] [12] The pair had previously played together in the metallic hardcore bands Culture and Organized Pain. [13] [7] [12] After practicing with vocalist César Morales for about a month, they recruited new vocalist Damien Moyal, who had also previously played in Culture with Wylie, and Reach (another metallic hardcore band) with Long, [14] and was then a member of the melodic metalcore band Shai Hulud. [5] [15] Although Moyal and Wylie had suffered conflicts of interest in Culture nine months prior (which had led to Moyal's departure shortly before a tour and hasty replacement by Long), the two hoped to reconcile their differences, which in turn inspired the lyrics to Moyal's first Morning Again song, "Turning Over". [5] [7] In December 1995, the band was completed with the addition of second guitarist Michael Wolz (formerly of Uplipht and After All) and bass guitarist Eric Ervin (formerly of Discount). [16]
In late January 1996, the band entered Studio 13 in Deerfield Beach, Florida to record five songs ("Turning Over", "Family Ties", "America On Line", "Minus One" and "Remedy") with recording engineer and producer Jeremy Staska. [17] [18] Moyal and Wylie had previously recorded at the studio several times with Culture, while Long had recorded there with his other band Donut Run. [7] [19]
The lyrics to "Family Ties" talk about a teenager having to choose between a bigoted family or everything else in which he personally believes; the release's title The Cleanest War stems from a line of lyric in the song "Alone is the cleanest war, at least it's now fought fair". [7] "America On Line" deals with social and political issues surrounding internet dependency, being entrapped by one's computer, social security numbers and tracking by the LoJack system. [7] Its title is a reference to the internet service provider America On Line. [7] "Minus One" recounts a story from the perspective of parents whose child is abducted and murdered; how it must feel to have a child taken away and what one would want to do about it, challenging the positions of the death sentence. [7] It was loosely inspired by the story of Adam Walsh, which had become folklore for children growing up in Miami, Florida during the 1980s and early 1990s. [7] [5] "Remedy" was partly inspired by the 1995 film Outbreak, and partly by the AIDS disease, and deals with a fictional political authority that has developed a cure for the virus but is refusing to make it public for nefarious reasons and profit. [7] The opening of the song includes a sample from the film, and the ending features backing group vocals performed by all of the members of the band. [17]
Although Wylie later professed in retrospective interviews that the band originally went into Studio 13 to record a demo tape, without definitive plans for a future release, [20] he had already been in contact with Redford, Michigan-based record label Conquer the World Records' owner Michael Warden. [7] [21] Conquer the World Records had previously released Culture's debut full-length album, Born of You, in June 1995, [13] and although the band had mixed feelings about the record label's practices, [22] [23] Wylie remained in contact with Warden, letting him hear practice recordings of his new band Morning Again's songs over the phone. [7] [21] Warden liked what he heard and offered to release whatever the band recorded. [7] [21]
With the band's debut extended play originally scheduled for release in mid-April 1996 (it was ultimately delayed by a month), [24] Morning Again self-released a limited edition demo tape that included the songs "Turning Over" and "Remedy"; the demo tape was available starting February 9, 1996. [25] The cover art and booklet design for The Cleanest War was made up of Moyal's newly-designed band logo and handwritten song titles (for the back cover), along with live pictures of the band taken by Stefanie Jones, Kelly Wisniewski and Heather Iannelli. [17] The layout work was handled by Ronald Jasin, an associate of Conquer the World Records. [17]
Conquer the World Records released The Cleanest War on compact disc on May 15, 1996. [2] [26] The 12" vinyl version was delayed by several months, and was first released on a clear medium blue color with black swirl, limited to 300 copies. [21] [27] It was subsequently repressed twice by Conquer the World Records. [28] The second pressing was released in August 1998 and came on clear color with black swirl (limited to 500 copies) and clear color with black and green swirl (limited to 75 copies). [27] [21] The third pressing was released in December 1998 and came on solid black color, limited to 300 copies. [21] [29] In October 2005, Conquer the World Records reissued The Cleanest War digitally through digital retailers Echospin and iTunes. [30] [31]
In a 1997 interview, Wylie initially criticized Conquer the World Records for only selling a few thousand copies of the release, [20] but in subsequent interviews, he criticized the record label for repressing the release without the band's permission. [23] [11] [22] [32]
All five songs from The Cleanest War were later combined with Morning Again's eponymous 7" vinyl (recorded in March 1996), [16] for Belgian record label Good Life Recordings' compact disc and 12" vinyl compilation Hand of Hope , released in January 1997. [1] [33] The same songs were again reissued on the compact disc compilation Hand of the Martyr , which was co-released by Wylie's own record label, Eulogy Recordings, and German record label Alveran Records, on May 28, 2002, to coincide with a Morning Again reunion show. [9] [34] [35] The songs were once again repackaged on the 12" vinyl compilation I, released by German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment on September 25, 2015. [10] In 2022, Belgian record label Stick to the Core Records repressed The Cleanest War for its 26th anniversary. [4]
In promotion of The Cleanest War and its eponymous 7" vinyl (both released in May 1996), [16] the band embarked on its first two-week North American tour, playing shows across the East Coast and Midwest of the United States and Canada. [5] [6] [7] Accompanied by Intention Records owner Jon Philips as roadie, [16] the tour spanned from May 27 to June 12, 1996, during which Morning Again played in Atlanta, Georgia, Madisonville, Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana, Dayton, Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio, Westland, Michigan, Oakville, Ontario, Buffalo, New York, Connecticut, Takoma Park, Maryland, Washington D.C., Gainesville, Florida, Coconut Grove, Florida, and Saint Petersburg, Florida. [6] [7] The band shared the stage with such bands as Hot Water Music, Bane, Elliott, 108, Inquisition, Rye Coalition and Fury of Five. [5] [6] [7]
Shortly after returning home from the tour, Moyal and Ervin were fired from the band due to recurring conflicts with Wylie. [5] [7] [8] In a retrospective interview, Moyal revealed that his firing was driven by egos and a fight for leadership of the band. [36] Wylie wanted the band to become a strict vegan and straight-edge outfit, with not only the members following those lifestyles, but for the band's lyrics to preach those beliefs as well, while Moyal, on the other hand, had joined Morning Again under the condition that his lyrics would not be limited to topics once covered in his former vegan and straight edge band Culture. [5] [36] Unbeknownst to Moyal, Wylie had already made plans to replace him with Kevin Byers, a musician then-based in Dayton, Ohio, with whose band, Outcast, Morning Again had played four days into the tour. [5] [7] [37] Byers, in turn, invited another friend from Dayton, Ohio, Christopher Beckham, to replace Ervin. [5] [7] [37] Moyal went on to play in Bird of Ill Omen, As Friends Rust, Bridgeburne R and Damien Done, while Ervin played in Kumité. [5]

The Cleanest War and Morning Again received mixed critical acclaim upon the extended play's release. Although a first review by Ox-Fanzine panned the release in 1996, [40] a second review published in 1997 stated "The best release that has been released on Conquer the World Records to date is probably the Chokehold LP, but Morning Again could be the next big thing for [the label]." [41] Fracture's Sean McKee noted that "the band created thick chugging anthems, with scattered and intricate detail and guitar leads straight from the Bay Area thrash metal scene", [32] while Christine Boarts at Slug and Lettuce opined "I absolutely love this band. Power-packed, heavy on the metal-hardcore that is all about the chugga chugga and judd judd chunks with a unique and nice balance of emo bits". [1]
The release, however, received criticism for its affiliation with Conquer the World Records, with writers pointing out that the record label had shady business dealings, and was noted for its substandard layout designs. [3] [39]
The band was quickly compared to its predecessor, Culture, [3] [40] [41] as well as to Despair, [3] [39] Unbroken, [32] Snapcase, [39] Deadguy, [39] Chokehold, [41] Earth Crisis, [41] and Slayer. [3] [39] [41] With the term "metalcore" not yet a household name, Morning Again's style was described by critics as "new school mosh hardcore", [41] "new school heavy hardcore", [33] "metal-influenced hardcore", [32] "hardcore heavy with metal", [1] and "lending their hardcore influences with tight metallic elements". [4] Reviewers described the music as powerful [33] and having "fast cross-over metal riffs", [38] "breaks with subsequent tempo changes", [41] "heavy start and stop", [3] [39] and "mixing a robust collection of breaks and breakdowns". [4] Praise was given for the use of acoustic guitar for "a melodic effect" in the opening of "Minus One". [38] [39] [4]
Staska's recording was praised as a "good, clean production that enhances the metal aspect of the music". [39] Most reviewers also complimented Moyal's spoken word-style vocal delivery, [1] [38] and noted his lyrics as well-written. [38] [32] [1] However, some reviewers (including Kent McClard of HeartattaCk ) singled-out and mocked the lyrics from "America On Line", which dealt with internet dependency, an obscure topic at the time. A Young Trophy Band in the Parlance of Our Times is the third extended play by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc and 12" vinyl by American record label Equal Vision Records on May 28, 2002. German record label Defiance Records licensed the rights to the extended play for the European market, though these compact disc and 12" vinyl editions were released a day earlier than the American one, on May 27, 2002.
The Fists of Time is the debut extended play by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was originally released by Belgian record label Good Life Recordings on July 13, 1998, on compact disc and 10" vinyl. American record label Doghouse Records reissued the release, under the expanded title The Fists of Time: An Anthology of Short Fiction and Non-Fiction, on compact disc, 12" vinyl and digitally, with new artwork and two additional songs, on June 22, 2000. In promotion of the release, As Friends Rust toured the United States, United Kingdom and Europe several times between June 1998 and September 2000. The bands that accompanied As Friends Rust on these tours include Discount, Dillinger Four, Strike Anywhere, Grade, Ensign, Ignite, Good Clean Fun, Garrison, Glasseater, Mid Carson July, The Agency, Purusam, Fast Times and Keith Welsh.
As Friends Rust is an American melodic hardcore band based in Gainesville, Florida. The original line-up, which included vocalist Damien Moyal, guitarist Henry Olmino, bass guitarist Jeronimo Gomez and drummer Matthew Crum, formed in Davie, Florida in September 1996. After recording a demo tape but failing to secure a record deal, the band parted ways in February 1997.
As Friends Rust is the third release by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc, 8-inch vinyl and digitally in the United States on September 17, 1999. The eponymous extended play was the band's first output as part of an exclusive three-record contract with Toledo, Ohio-based record company Doghouse Records. As Friends Rust was licensed by Doghouse Records to various foreign markets, beginning with Belgian record label Good Life Recordings, which released the extended play on compact disc and double 7-inch vinyl several months earlier in July 1999. The European edition features a bonus song and a different artwork, but was erroneously promoted by Good Life Recordings as God Hour, though that title never appeared on the actual release. Doghouse Records also licensed As Friends Rust to Japanese record label Howling Bull Entertainment, which released a compact disc edition on October 5, 1999, and British record label Golf Records, which released a compact disc edition on October 22, 2001; these versions included six additional songs, a different artwork, and were promoted under the title Eleven Songs.
Damien Zev Moyal is an American vocalist, lyricist, musician, songwriter and designer. Originally from Amstelveen, North Holland, Netherlands, he moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Miami, Florida, where he notably fronted such hardcore punk, metallic hardcore and melodic hardcore bands as Shai Hulud, As Friends Rust, Morning Again, Culture, Bird of Ill Omen and Bridgeburne R. Moyal has been based in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2006 and is the founding member of the semi-eponymously named gothic rock/post-punk band Damien Done.
Won is the first full-length album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc and 12" vinyl by American record label Doghouse Records on October 23, 2001. German record label Defiance Records licensed the rights to release the album on compact disc and 12" vinyl for the European market, though this edition was released a week earlier than the American one, on October 15, 2001. Japanese record label Howling Bull Entertainment also licensed the rights to release the album for the Asian market; this compact disc edition was released even earlier, on October 5, 2001, and includes two bonus tracks.
Morning Again is an American metalcore band from Florida. They were known for their metallic sound as well as for their straight edge, vegan, anti-religious and anti-government ideals. The band was a "sister band" to Culture, often switching members after one had left the other. Several members went on to play in other bands such as As Friends Rust and Dead Blue Sky. The band was originally from Cooper City, Florida, but moved to Coral Springs in 1998 before breaking up later that year. After playing several reunion shows over the years, the band released a new EP in 2018.
Eleven Songs is a compilation album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was originally released on compact disc by Japanese record label Howling Bull Entertainment on October 5, 1999. British record label Golf Records reissued the release, also on compact disc, on October 22, 2001. At the time of its original release in 1999, Eleven Songs was considered somewhat of a discography, since it included all but a single song of what As Friends Rust had released; the Circle Jerks cover "Operation" was omitted.
Damien Done is an American post-punk/gothic rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Formed in Gainesville, Florida in 2002 as a semi-eponymously-named solo project by frontman Damien Moyal, the group has since been expanded to include other band members and co-songwriters. The current lineup features Moyal, Laura Jane Leonard and Tyler Kane.
Kaleb Stewart was an American musician, vocalist, songwriter and former skateboarder. Originally from Talkeetna, Alaska, he moved around in his childhood before settling in Tampa, Florida as a teenager, and later made his home in Gainesville, Florida. While in Gainesville, he notably played bass guitar and provided backing vocals in the melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust from 1998 to 2000, and in the hardcore punk band Bridgeburne R from 1999 to 2000. Stewart took part of As Friends Rust's reunion in 2008, and remained with the band until 2019.
Timothy James Kirkpatrick is an American drummer. Originally from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Kirkpatrick played in punk band Shaft and emotional hardcore bands Roosevelt and Burgundy in his teens. After moving to Gainesville, Florida in 1997, he joined metallic hardcore band Culture and melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust, both with vocalist Damien Moyal.
Greatest Hits? is a compilation album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was originally released on compact disc by Japanese record label Cosmic Note on June 4, 2014. Indonesian record label D'Kolektif released the compilation on compact cassette on December 27, 2014. Dutch record label Shield Recordings re-issued the compact disc and issued a 12" vinyl edition for the European market on April 29, 2015, though this version omitted three songs due to vinyl time constraints.
The Porch Days: 1998 to 2000 is a compilation album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on vinyl by German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment on May 22, 2015. The release compiles a selection of As Friends Rust recordings that showcase the band's most recognizable line-up, which spanned from March 1998 to October 2000. The band then consisted of lead vocalist Damien Moyal, drummer Timothy Kirkpatrick, bass guitarist and backing vocalist Kaleb Stewart, and revolving guitarists Gordon Tarpley, Joseph Simmons, Peter Bartsocas and James Glayat.
Charm Offensive is the debut full-length album by American gothic rock/post-punk band Damien Done. Originally scheduled for release on February 16, 2018, by American record label Mind Over Matter Records, the digital version was pushed back to March 2, 2018, while the 12-inch vinyl version was delayed until April 26, 2018. Belgian record label Hypertension Records licensed the rights to issue the album on 12-inch vinyl for the European market, releasing its edition on August 10, 2018, to coincide with the band's European and British tour.
On Bodies was an American hardcore band active from 2009 to 2017. Principally based in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the majority of its members resided, it also included members from Michigan, Florida, New Jersey, and Kentucky. The group was formed by guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter Richard Thurston, and vocalist and lyricist Damien Moyal. The band later also included former members of Until the End, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Glasseater, Destro, Mixtapes, and The Homeless Gospel Choir.
As Tradition Dies Slowly is the debut full-length album by American metalcore band Morning Again. It was released on compact disc and 12-inch vinyl by American record label Revelation Records on June 30, 1998. It was the band's first release to enter music charts, reaching number 22 and spending nine weeks on CMJ New Music Report's Loud Rock chart, and reaching number 50 on FMQB's Metal Detector Pure Spins chart. The album was subsequently re-issued digitally by Revelation Records, and was later repressed on 12-inch vinyl on July 9, 2015, and again on January 22, 2019.
Joseph Lee Simmons is an American guitarist, bass guitarist, songwriter and brewer. Originally from Houston, Texas, Simmons grew up in Coral Springs, Florida, where he notably played in the hardcore punk bands Dinner Time and Lock Down, the sludge metal band Bird of Ill Omen and the metallic hardcore band Morning Again. He later moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he played in the metallic hardcore bands Culture and Some Sort of Radio, the melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust, and the emotional hardcore / post-hardcore band Salem. He currently plays in the black metal band Rot in Coffins.
The discography of Damien Done, an American post-punk / gothic rock band, includes two studio albums, four extended plays, five internet compilation extended plays, fourteen singles and eight music videos.
Stay Black is the debut extended play by American gothic rock and roll / post-punk band Damien Done. Originally titled Love Thongs, it was recorded in September 2003 and scheduled for release in April 2004, through Belgian record label Good Life Recordings. The record company refused to release the extended play and kept it stuck in limbo for thirteen years, until German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment licensed its rights in late 2015. While awaiting its official release, the band offered the music for free download and streaming across a variety of websites, with an often-changing track listing and several different cover artworks. Demons Run Amok Entertainment's official vinyl and digital release was finally issued on July 8, 2016.
