The HELIX Health + Life Science Exchange, originally called The Hub for the New Jersey Innovation and Technology Hub, is a research, business incubator and innovation center under construction in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which itself is called The Hub City. [1] [2] The project is across the street from the New Brunswick station, served by NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor Line and several Amtrak trains. [3]
The site was formerly the Ferren Mall, which opened in 1982, was later abandoned and demolished in 2017. It is planned to contain three buildings. Ground was broken for Phase 1 of the $650 million project in October 2021. It includes a 13-story building with retail space on the first floors. [4] It is expected to be completed in 2024 [5] [6] and open in 2025.
The 3rd phase of the project will include a 42-story mixed used building. [7] [8]
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority and the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO) are partners in the project. [9] Part of the project will be dedicated to translational research. Tenants will include: [10] Officials believe a chip manufacturer could be a potential tenant. [11]

It is an outdoor shopping plaza with a gross leasable area of 470,000 sq ft (44,000 m2). From the mall's opening in 1972 until 2016, it was branded Ledgewood Mall as a 518,246-square-foot (48,147 m2) enclosed mall.
RWJBarnabas Health is a network of independent healthcare providers in New Jersey, based out of West Orange. Members include academic centers, acute care facilities, and research hospitals. The goals of the network include collaboration on educational and research programs.
The Gateway is a mixed-use tower in New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States, adjacent to the Northeast Corridor Line New Brunswick rail station. It was proposed in February 2005 by DEVCO as part of the Easton-Somerset redevelopment area. Several businesses were relocated from the site during 2008 and 2009. The project was completed in September 2012, at a cost of $150 million.
Robert Lawrence Barchi is an American academic, physician, and scientist. He was the 20th president of Rutgers University, holding the position from September 1, 2012, to June 30, 2020. Barchi was appointed to the position on April 11, 2012, to succeed Richard L. McCormick. Previously, Barchi was president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, prior to which he was provost of the University of Pennsylvania.

50 Rector Park is an apartment building in Newark, New Jersey, the first market rate residential high-rise to be newly built in the city since 1962. Originally called One Riverview and later 1 Rector Street, there was a groundbreaking in 2013, but construction did not begin at the site until the spring of 2017. It was topped out in April 2018 and opened June 2019.

New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit urban real estate development organization created in the mid-1970s to initiate redevelopment projects and to serve as the vehicle for public and private investment in the City of New Brunswick and other New Jersey urban communities. Since its inception, Devco has overseen more than $3 billion in investment to aid in economic revitalization in New Brunswick as well as redevelopment projects in Atlantic City, Newark, and Paterson.
Mary Chayko is an American sociologist and Distinguished Teaching Professor of Communication and Information at Rutgers University. She is the director of Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies at Rutgers University's School of Communication and Information and a five-year Faculty Fellow in Residence at the Rutgers-New Brunswick Honors College (2017-2022). She is an affiliated faculty member of the Sociology Department and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department at Rutgers.
