The Legend of Xiao Chuo (Chinese :燕云台; pinyin :Yan Yun Tai) is a 2020 Chinese television series based on the novel Yan Yun Tai by Jiang Shengnan. It stars Tiffany Tang in the title role, along with Shawn Dou, Charmaine Sheh and Jing Chao. [1] The series chronicles the life of legendary Empress Xiao Yanyan. [2] [3]
This is the story of Empress Xiao Yanyan, also known as Xiao Chuo from the Liao dynasty.
Xiao Yanyan is the third daughter of prime minister Xiao Siwen and Princess Yan. She falls in love with the young lieutenant Han Derang and the couple eventually decide to marry each other. However, their promise of love is severed when Xiao Siwen, Yanyan's father agrees to let Yelü Xian take Yanyan as his empress after ascended the throne. Yanyan's relationship with sisters Xiao Hunian and Wuguli also deteriorate due to the power struggle between their husbands, who each believe they have a legitimate claim to the throne.
Suddenly, Yelu Xian was critically ill that he entrusted the government to Yanyan and she became the most important woman in Liao history. She broke political boundaries, completed the process of Liao's sinicization from original tribe to a feudal dynasty, promoted the integration of Khitans and Hans, also bring prosperous and continuous towards the dynasty. On emotional side, she bravely pursued disregarding the widow's voice and the world's material opinions about womens. [4]

Emperor Xingzong of Liao, personal name Zhigu, sinicised name Yelü Zongzhen, was the seventh emperor of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China.
Emperor Taizong of Liao, personal name Yaogu, sinicised name Yelü Deguang, courtesy name Dejin, was the second emperor of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China.
Emperor Jingzong of Liao, personal name Yelü Xian, courtesy name Xianning, was the fifth emperor of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China. He improved government efficiency and reduced corruption. He was known for going to war with the Northern Song dynasty. He died during a hunting trip and his wife later served as regent over his still 11-year-old son, the later Emperor Shengzong.
Xiao Chuo, nickname Yanyan, also known as Empress Dowager Chengtian (承天皇太后) was a Khitan empress and military leader of imperial China's Liao dynasty. She was regent on behalf of her son from 982.
Yelü Bei, also known as Yelü Tuyu, posthumously honored Emperor Wenxian Qinyi (文獻欽義皇帝) with the temple name Yizong, formally known as Renhuang Wang during his lifetime, known as Dongdan Muhua (東丹慕華) (931) and then Li Zanhua (李贊華) (931–937) as a Later Tang subject, was the eldest son of Emperor Taizu of Liao, the founder of the Liao dynasty. He was declared successor to the Emperor Taizu in 916, but never succeeded to the throne. Rather, after the accession of his younger brother Yelü Deguang, he fled to the Shatuo-led Later Tang dynasty, where he was killed in 937.
Xiao Wen, formally Empress Jing'an, probably née Shulü Wen (述律溫), was an empress of the Khitan-led Chinese Liao dynasty. She was the wife of Emperor Taizong.
Li Congyi, known as the Prince of Xu (許王), was an imperial prince of the Later Tang dynasty of China. He was the youngest son of its second emperor, Li Siyuan. During the chaos following the destruction of the Later Tang's successor state, the Later Jin dynasty, he was forced to claim imperial title by Xiao Han, a general of the Liao dynasty, and was subsequently killed by Liu Zhiyuan, the founder of the succeeding Later Han dynasty.
Yelü Lihu (耶律李胡) (911-960), also named Honggu (洪古), courtesy name Xiyin (奚隱), formally Emperor Zhangsu (章肅皇帝), was an imperial prince of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty. As the third son of Liao's founding emperor Emperor Taizu and his wife Empress Shulü Ping, Yelü Lihu served as crown prince during the reign of his older brother Emperor Taizong, who was their second son, as Empress Shulü wanted him to be emperor after Emperor Taizong. However, after Emperor Taizong's death, their older brother Yelü Bei's son Yelü Ruan was able to defeat Yelü Lihu in battle and take the throne. Yelü Lihu was put under arrest and later died while under arrest.
Xiao Han, probably born with the name Shulü Han (述律翰), also named Dilie (敵烈), courtesy name Hanzhen (寒真), was a general of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China. After Emperor Taizong of Liao conquered the Later Jin, Xiao was left in control of the Later Jin's former capital Daliang, but he was unable to hold it. He later plotted against Emperor Taizong's nephew and successor Emperor Shizong and was executed.
Empress Zhen was an empress of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China. She was one of the two empresses of Emperor Shizong.

Han Derang, known for his Khitan name, Yelü Longyun, Xingning, or Yaoge was a Chinese politician. He served as the prime minister of the Liao dynasty during the reign of Empress Xiao Chuo. He was a native of Hebei Yutian (祖籍河北玉田) and born into the Shihou family.
Xiao Siwen was a Chinese politician who served as the chancellor and northern commissioner for military affairs of the Liao dynasty. He was the father of Xiao sisters. However, for the sake of the overall situation and family glory, he agrees to make his youngest daughter Xiao Yanyan married with Yelü Xian and in 969, after Yanyan become the Liao Empress, Xiao then honoured as King of Wei (魏王). Later, when he an accompanied Xian Siwen on the hunt, he was assassinated by Gao Xun's people.
Yelü Lübugu or known by the title Princess of Yan State, was a Liao dynasty princess and the first daughter of Emperor Taizong of Liao. She then married Prime Minister Xiao Siwen and bore him the three Xiao Sisters. However, she died from her illness. Her youngest daughter Xiao Yanyan married with Yelü Xian and in 969 and become the Liao empress. The Xiao family was the consort kin of the Liao dynasty, all future empresses and imperial brides originating from this faction.
Yelü Xiyin, also known by his title Prince of Song, was an imperial prince of the Liao dynasty. He was the eldest son of former Crown Prince Yelü Lihu by Empress Hejing. Xiyin married Lady Xiao, the second daughter of Prime minister Xiao Siwen.
Yelü Zhimo, also known by his title the King of Ning (宁王), was an imperial prince of the Liao dynasty. He was granted as the King of Ning during the reign of Emperor Muzong of Liao. He was the third son of Emperor Shizong by Empress Zhen. His mother was the only Han Empress Consort in Liao's history. He was half younger brother of Emperor Jingzong. Zhimo has an affair with one of Yelü Jing's maid and after it was discovered by Jing own, he lost one of his eye to protect his lover and then become half blind, also sentenced to imperial punishment and became an eunuch. After his wife death, he started live alone in his Mansion and became a Buddhist monk.
