The Legendary Pink Dots discography | |
---|---|
Studio albums | 47 |
Live albums | 26 |
Compilation albums | 48 |
Video albums | 7 |
This is a detailed list of releases by the European band The Legendary Pink Dots. As of 2012 [update] , they have released 32 studio albums, 52 live albums and compilations, and 14 singles. Their first release was the cassette Only Dreaming in 1981, initially limited to 10 copies only, each with their own, handmade cover. [1] After a few more cassette-only releases, Brighter Now saw the light of day in the following year, as their first 'proper' album.
From the start, their output has been quite prolific, with no less than four tapes released in the first year of their existence alone. [2] This would not change until the late nineties, with a new album with original material every 1–2 years only, but accompanied by re-releases of early, hard-to-find material, and live albums.
In addition, singer Edward Ka-Spel has released more than 60 solo albums to date, and he and other members of the band have collaborated in various other projects, most notably in The Tear Garden, which originally consisted of Ka-Spel and cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy, [3] but later expanded to involve all current Pink Dots members as well as several friends of both the Pink Dots and Key.
Another notable peculiarity in the Pink Dots' discography is their affection for vinyl. With only a few exceptions, all of their albums have seen vinyl editions in addition to the standard CD release, many of them (like their 2010 studio album, Seconds Late For The Brighton Line ) featuring exclusive tracks not found on the CD, although some may later appear on the digital release.
In their history, The Legendary Pink Dots have released—and re-released—their records on a large number of labels, as well as having their own label, The Terminal Kaleidoscope, and a bandcamp.com page for digital self-distribution.

Kevin William Crompton, known professionally as cEvin Key, is a Canadian musician, songwriter, producer, and composer. He is best known as a member of the industrial music group Skinny Puppy, which he co-founded in 1982 with singer Nivek Ogre. Initially a side project while he was with the new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy quickly became his primary musical outlet after landing a record deal with Nettwerk Records in 1984.
Edward Sharp, better known by his stage name Edward Ka-Spel, is an English singer-songwriter and musician, born in London on 23 January 1954, to a family with East Anglia connections. He is best known for his work with the band The Legendary Pink Dots, which he co-founded.
The Legendary Pink Dots are an Anglo-Dutch rock band formed in London in August 1980. In 1984, the band moved to Amsterdam, playing with rotating musicians and having, as core members, singer/songwriter/keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist Phil Knight. In 2022, founding member and synthesist Philip Knight retired from touring, and Randall Frazier joined the band on synths, samples and electronics.
The Tear Garden is a psychedelic/experimental/electronic band, formed by Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots and cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy in 1985 after Key served as a sound engineer on tour in Canada for Ka-Spel. Mimir is a joint music project started by The Legendary Pink Dots member Edward Ka-Spel and the father of numerous other projects Christoph Heemann. On Mimyriad they were joined by musician and producer Jim O'Rourke, making them something of a left field supergroup. Having similar interests in musical experimentation, specifically in textural music, the two started recording in Heemann's studio. In 1991 their first, self-titled, album came out on the Flabbergast label. Two of the following albums the group members consider to be more successful in accomplishing the initial goal of making texture-based music. The first two albums have been reissued in remixed/reworked versions on the Streamline label in 2007.
Attrition are an English electronic music band, formed in Coventry in 1980 by Martin Bowes and Julia Niblock. The band emerged from the experimental post-punk scene of the early 1980s and, along with other groups such as Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Einstürzende Neubauten, and In the Nursery, greatly contributed to the development of industrial music in the UK.

The Last Man to Fly is The Tear Garden's second full release, released five years after the first. A single title Romulus and Venus was released and was well received by critics.

I Can Spin a Rainbow is a collaborative studio album by American singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer and English singer-songwriter Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots. In a blog post on her official website, Palmer explained the backstory of how she was obsessed with the Pink Dots as a teenager, and even wrote and directed an experimental dialogue-free play inspired by their album Asylum when she was seventeen. When she was nineteen, the band needed a place to stay while on tour in Boston, Massachusetts and Palmer offered up her house. The Legendary Pink Dots also served as an opening act for Palmer's band the Dresden Dolls in the early 2000s. The two of them spent years trying to find a time to record an album together, but due to struggles in Palmer's personal life, plans always fell through. Most of the album was recorded in the house of English musician Imogen Heap.
