On the fourth anniversary of the death of his beloved mentor due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Michael "Robby" Rabinavitch works a shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital ER (affectionately nicknamed "The Pitt"). As Dr. Robby starts his shift at 7 A.M., he is introduced to his new group of eager but inexperienced med students and interns: Victoria, daughter of respected senior physician Eileen Shamsi, who faints when confronted with a degloved foot, insecure but caring Dennis, who injures his finger after trapping it during a patient transfer, and the confident and assured Trinity, who is eager to start learning. Also new to The Pitt is Mel, a socially awkward but skilled resident with previous experience working with military veterans, who is assigned to shadow Frank, a charismatic and self-confident senior resident. Gloria, the chief medical officer, warns Robby that the department must improve its standards to avoid sanctions. Charge nurse Dana discovers that senior resident Heather is pregnant, but she agrees to keep it a secret. Heather attempts to determine a way to communicate with Minu, a patient who does not speak English, after she was seemingly pushed onto the subway track. Cassie, a second year resident, treats a triathlete named Otis, who presents with shortness of breath. Robby meets Theresa, a mother who makes herself ill so that she can seek help for her son David after she discovers some concerning and violent writing in his journal, but David flees the department before Robby can speak to him.

When a four year old child is brought into The Pitt after accidentally ingesting one of his father’s weed gummies, Frank and Mel have to manage his irate mother while ensuring the family receive the required intervention from Children’s Services. Robby must go against his morals when the children of an elderly man suffering from pneumonia decide to override his do not resuscitate orders and push for treatment that could lead to a slower, more painful death. Other cases include an unhoused man who arrives with a coat full of rats, a man with an electric dog collar glued to his neck, and a man who got into a scooter accident while not wearing a helmet. Victoria clashes with Trinity, and learns about Cassie's life as a single mother and doctor, but is shocked to find that she wears an ankle monitor. Third year resident Samira treats a lady with crippling pain due to sickle cell disease, while Robby must tell the parents of a teenage boy that their son is brain-dead after he overdoses on pills laced with fentanyl. Dennis connects with Bennett, a patient who he later finds unresponsive in the hallway.

On March 26, 2024, Max gave production a 15-episode series order for The Pitt. The series is created and showrun by R. Scott Gemmill who is also an executive producer alongside Noah Wyle, John Wells, Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich. [1] Production companies involved with the series are John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The pilot is also written by Gemmill. [10] On August 27, 2024, it was reported that the estate of Michael Crichton, represented by his widow Sherri, had sued Warner Bros. Television, Wells, Wyle, and Gemmill over breach of contract, claiming that The Pitt was a reworking of a planned sequel to ER that the estate had not approved, and that Crichton should be credited as creator. [11] On November 4, 2024, Warner Bros. Television's lawyers responded to the lawsuit by filing for a motion to dismiss, claiming that it is "a completely different show". [12] On February 14, 2025, Max renewed the series for a second season. [4]
Upon the series order announcement, Wyle was also cast to star. [1] On July 12, 2024, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Katherine LaNasa joined the cast as series regulars. [13] On August 14, 2024, Shawn Hatosy, Michael Hyatt, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Brandon Mendez Homer, Kristin Villanueva, Amielynn Abellera, Alexandra Metz, Krystel V. McNeil, and Deepti Gupta were cast in recurring capacities. [5]
The Pitt premiered on Max on January 9, 2025, with the first two episodes available immediately and the rest debuting on a weekly basis until April 10. [2]
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating with an average rating of 8.1/10, based on 44 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Setting the trials and tribulations of hospital life on a timer, The Pitt combines multiple tried-and-true formulas to create a bracingly fresh medical drama." [7] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 76 out of 100 based on 26 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews. [14]
In a positive review written for The New Republic , Phillip Maciak praised the contrasting pacing of the show's plotlines. [15]
