The stolen ambulance crashes, and the team treat the two frat boys responsible. Trinity is humbled when she accidentally drops a scalpel onto which pierces the foot of Yolanda, an ace surgeon to whom she had been ingratiating herself. Nick's parents continue to struggle to accept the death of their son, while Heather treats a young man with testicular torsion and is encouraged by his relationship with his mother, which helps her start to come to terms with her own pregnancy. Trinity and Frank treat a patient with neurocysticercosis, as Mel struggles with what to do about Ginger, who is still waiting for her daughter to return, but receives reassurance from Dana that she doesn't need to have all of the answers to be there for her patients. Victoria is embarrassed when her mother arrives to see a patient. Gloria tells Robby that, if patient satisfaction scores don't improve, she will have to consider bringing in a corporate management firm to take over The Pitt. Kristi's mother forbids her to have the abortion, so she locks herself in a bathroom and contacts Lynette for backup, leading to a fight between the two women.

Following a frank discussion with Heather, Kristi's mother consents to her having the abortion. Mel's experience caring for her sister is an asset when Frank finds it difficult to support an autistic patient with a sprained ankle. The team treat a gentleman suffering from a heart attack and call in the ECMO team for assistance, which triggers Robby's memories of Dr Adamson receiving the same intervention. He later argues with Heather over his treatment of Samira and the other staff. Samira and Victoria deal with a case of suspected schizophrenia, but further investigation reveals that the patient may be feeling the effects of mercury poisoning from an unapproved face cream. The wife of Trinity's patient confesses that she has been drugging her husband with progesterone to dull his sex drive because she believes he is molesting their daughter, so Trinity relays this to Robby and Kiara who agree to look into it. When the daughter does not want to discuss the situation, Trinity threatens the incapacitated father, citing previous experiences with men who abuse their positions of trust. After being inadvertently caught in the fight between Lynette and her sister earlier in the shift, Heather goes to the bathroom and fears she may be suffering a miscarriage.

On March 26, 2024, Max gave production a 15-episode series order for The Pitt. The series is created and showrun by R. Scott Gemmill who is also an executive producer alongside Noah Wyle, John Wells, Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich. [1] Production companies involved with the series are John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The pilot is also written by Gemmill. [10] On August 27, 2024, it was reported that the estate of ER creator Michael Crichton, represented by his widow Sherri, had sued Warner Bros. Television, Wells, Wyle, and Gemmill—all of whom had been involved in the earlier series—over breach of contract, claiming that The Pitt was a reworking of a planned sequel to ER that the estate had not approved, and that Crichton should be credited as creator of The Pitt. [11] On November 4, 2024, Warner Bros. Television's lawyers responded to the lawsuit by filing for a motion to dismiss, claiming that it is "a completely different show". [12] On February 14, 2025, Max renewed the series for a second season. [4]
Upon the series order announcement, Wyle was also cast to star. [1] On July 12, 2024, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Katherine LaNasa joined the cast as series regulars. [13] On August 14, 2024, Shawn Hatosy, Michael Hyatt, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Brandon Mendez Homer, Kristin Villanueva, Amielynn Abellera, Alexandra Metz, Krystel V. McNeil, and Deepti Gupta were cast in recurring capacities. [5]
The Pitt premiered on Max on January 9, 2025, with the first two episodes available immediately and the rest debuting on a weekly basis until April 10. [2]
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating with an average rating of 8.1/10, based on 44 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Setting the trials and tribulations of hospital life on a timer, The Pitt combines multiple tried-and-true formulas to create a bracingly fresh medical drama." [7] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 76 out of 100 based on 26 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews. [14]
In a positive review written for The New Republic , Phillip Maciak praised the contrasting pacing of the show's plotlines. [15] The show has been well-received by the medical community, in part due to its accurate portrayal of medicine and emergency room conditions. [16]
