Toilet talk

Last updated

Toilet talk is a form of telephony where parties communicate through toilets connected to the same plumbing line. [1] Parties at either end speak into their toilet bowls, and the bowls and plumbing line serve as a speaking tube.

Due to hygienic issues, toilet talking is only prevalent among inmates.

The practice has been documented at multi-story jails in the United States including Multnomah County Detention Center in Oregon and San Quentin State Prison in California. [1]

The practice was highlighted by the Netflix series Jailbirds , at the Sacramento County Jail. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Pruno, or prison wine, is an alcoholic beverage variously made from apples, oranges, fruit cocktail, fruit juices, hard candy, sugar, high fructose syrup, and possibly other ingredients, including crumbled bread. Bread is incorrectly thought to contain yeast for the pruno to ferment. Pruno originated in prisons, where it can be produced with the limited selection of equipment and ingredients available to inmates. The concoction can be made using only a plastic bag, hot running water, and a towel or sock to conceal the pulp during fermentation. The end result has been colorfully described as a "bile flavored wine-cooler". Depending on the time spent fermenting, the sugar content, and the quality of the ingredients and preparation, pruno's alcohol content by volume can range from as low as 2% to as high as 14%.

Slopping out is the manual emptying of human waste when prison cells are unlocked in the morning. Inmates without a flush toilet in the cell have to use other means while locked in during the night. The reason that some cells do not have toilets is that they date from the Victorian era and were therefore not designed with plumbing. As a result, there is no space in which to put a toilet, together with the expense and difficulty of installing the necessary pipes.

In the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a dry cell can be used if a prisoner claims to be unable to urinate for a drug test under direct visual supervision. Prisoners are also sometimes placed in dry cells if they are suspected of having swallowed contraband.
