Tonye Briggs-Oniyide is the current Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. [1] She was appointed in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike,replacing Nnabuihe Imegwu.
Briggs was born in Port Harcourt with family roots in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers State. She attended the University of Port Harcourt for her undergraduate studies,earning a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry.
Briggs was appointed member of the Federal Character Commission by President Goodluck Jonathan on 9 July 2013. [2] She assumed office on 17 August,representing Rivers State. [3]
On 18 December 2015,she assumed office as Rivers State Culture and Tourism Commissioner,taking over the helm of the ministry from Nnabuihe Imegwu. In April 2016,she facilitated a partnership between the Africa Film Academy and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism through a landmark agreement which secured Port Harcourt as host city for the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards. [4] She has been criticized for not doing enough for the Entertainment industry in Rivers State,with some quarters calling for her resignation. She was suspended by the governor of the state on 31 August 2016. [5]
Port Harcourt is the capital and largest city in Rivers State,Nigeria. It is the fifth most populous city in Nigeria after Lagos,Kano,Ibadan and Benin. It lies along the Bonny River and is located in the Niger Delta. As of 2016,the Port Harcourt urban area,had an estimated Port Harcourt's 2023 population is now estimated at 3.5m,up from 1.4m as of 2006. The population of the metropolitan area of Port Harcourt is almost twice its urban area population with a 2015 United Nations estimate of 2,344,000. In 1950,the population of Port Harcourt was 59,752. Port Harcourt has grown by 150,844 since 2015,which represents a 4.99% annual change. Historically it has been known as Obomuotu Country within which a few other smaller areas were called Diobu.

Formed in 1967,when it was split from the former Eastern Region,Rivers State borders include:Imo to the north,Abia and Akwa Ibom to the east,and Bayelsa and Delta to the west. On 9 April 2022,Amaechi declared his interest to contest in the Presidential election in 2023,he came second in the APC presidential primaries held in June 2022 behind Bola Tinubu with 316 votes from the delegates.

Dame Patience Faka Jonathan (born 25 October 1957) is a Nigerian civil servant who served as the First Lady of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 and second lady of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. She is the wife of former president and Vice president of Nigeria Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. She served as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State.
Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who served as the governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023. He is an Ikwerre from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor,Rivers State. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party and was educated at Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

The Politics of Rivers State function within the framework of a presidential republic,with the Governor of Rivers State as both head of state and head of government. Daisy Wotube Okocha served as the 7th Chief Judge of Rivers State,in charge of the state's High Court of Justice,and Judicial Service Commission. She was appointed to the office by Governor Ezenwo Wike on 4 January 2016,and held it until her retirement on 15 January 2016. She had also served as Chief Judge in an acting capacity before attaining the substantive appointment.

The First Wike Executive Council was the Executive Council of Rivers State between 5 June 2015 and 24 June 2017. It was led by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike with Ipalibo Banigo as Vice-Chairman. The first set of appointments to the cabinet were made on 5 June 2015. The designees included Kenneth Kobani,Chukwuemeka Woke,Emmanuel C. Aguma,Fred Kpakol,Onimim Jacks,Emmanuel Okah and Opunabo Inko-Tariah. Governor Wike appointed Desmond Akawor,Ambassador to South Korea,to serve as Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority.
Onimim Ernestina Jacks is a lawyer serving since June 2015 as the Rivers State Commissioner of Agriculture in Nigeria. She is a member of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party.
The 2016 Africa Movie Academy Awards ceremony was held on Saturday 11 June 2016 at the Obi Wali International Conference Center in Port Harcourt,Rivers State. The ceremony recognized and honored excellence among directors,actors,and writers in the film industry. The awards night was hosted by Chris Attoh,Mike Ezuruonye and Kgopedi Lilokoe. It aired live on NTA to over 100 million viewers worldwide.
Roseline Sonayee Konya is a Nigerian academic and a politician from Khana,Rivers State. She is a professor of Toxicology and Pharmacology at the University of Port Harcourt. She served as Commissioner for Environment in the cabinet of Governor Peter Odili and was re-appointed to same office in the cabinet of Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. She was also the Chairman of Civil Service Commission in 1997.
Felicity Okpete Ovai is an engineer and academic from Degema,Rivers State in Nigeria. A member of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party,she was the first woman to be appointed Commissioner of Works,serving from 2003 to 2006.
Princewill Ogbogbula is the current Commissioner of Youth Development in the Executive Council of Rivers State. He was appointed to the position in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

The 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Rivers State,concurrent with elections to the Rivers State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.
On 28 May 2022,31 people were killed and seven others injured in a stampede in Port Harcourt,Rivers State,Nigeria,at a church event where free food was to be given out.
