Roseline Sonayee Konya is a Nigerian academic and a politician from Khana, Rivers State. She is a professor of Toxicology and Pharmacology at the University of Port Harcourt. [1] [2] She served as Commissioner for Environment [3] in the cabinet of Governor Peter Odili and was re-appointed to same office in the cabinet of Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. [4] She was also the Chairman of Civil Service Commission in 1997. [5]

Background and education

Born in Buan, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. Professor Konya attended St Arthur's Anglican Primary School, Buan from there she moved on to Mercy Secondary School, Okigwe (in present-day Imo State, Nigeria) for her secondary education.[ citation needed ] This was however disrupted by the Nigerian civil war, which began in late 1967. In 1968, while the war was still raging, she got enrolled into Holy Rosary Secondary School, Port Harcourt where she continued her secondary school education until 1969. From 1970 to 1971, she pursued studies for her A-level in St. Anne's School, Ibadan, from where she proceeded to The Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), UK, where she obtained her B.Sc. in Science in 1976 and 1977 obtained a master's degree from Loughborough University. In 1984, Konya rounded off her Doctorate Degree program in Brunel University, London.[ citation needed ]

Career

Konya began her career as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt in 1979, after which she moved on to Brunel University, U.K where she obtained her Ph.D. She returned to Nigeria in 1984 and continued as a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt. In the year 2003, Konya got promoted to the position of Professor of Animal and Environmental Biology.

She is the chairman of, the Technical Committee for the implementation of the Recommendations of the Rivers State Government Report on Soot [7] [8] [9]

Roseline Konya was married to the late Barido Konya, [10] with whom she had three children [11]

She is the pioneer chairman of the Methodist Knights Council – Port Harcourt Archdiocese; and the first female Methodist Knight in Rivers and Bayelsa States. [ citation needed ]

Peter Otunuya Odili is a Nigerian politician who was the third governor of Rivers State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. Odili is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is a Nigerian politician, he served as the federal minister of transportation of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022 under the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari. He resigned to contest for Nigeria's presidency under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). He previously served as governor of oil-rich Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007. On 9 April 2022, Amaechi declared his interest to contest in the presidential election in 2023, he came second in the APC presidential primaries held in June 2022 behind eventually winner Bola Tinubu with 316 votes from the delegates.

Obio-Akpor is a local government area in the metropolis of Port Harcourt, one of the major centres of economic activities in Nigeria, and one of the major cities of the Niger Delta, located in Rivers State, with industries and companies like Pabod Breweries, Coca-Cola Company, Indomie Company and Portharcourt Electricity Distribution Plc. Port Harcourt Local Government Area (PHALGA) is a local government area of Rivers State in southern Nigeria. It is one of the 23 local government areas created for the state. Marvin Dekil, is a Nigerian environmental scientist, lawyer, businessman and politician.
