Triptii Dimri (born 23 February 1994) [1] [2] is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. She made her acting debut in the thriller Mom (2017) and had her first lead role in the romantic drama Laila Majnu (2018). She gained critical recognition for her performances in Anvita Dutt's period films Bulbbul (2020) and Qala (2022), with the former earning her a Filmfare OTT Award.
Dimri was featured in Forbes Asia 's 30 Under 30 list of 2021. [3] She gained popularity with a supporting role in the top-grossing action film Animal (2023), earning a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, and has since starred in the comedy Bad Newz (2024).
Triptii Dimri hails from Garhwal in the state of Uttarakhand. [4] She was born to Meenakshi and Dinesh and in an interview she revealed that her parents have always been supportive of her in her career. [5]
Dimri did her schooling at Delhi Public School, and completed her graduation in English Honors from Sri Aurobindo College Evening. She later went on to pursue acting at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune after her graduation. [6]
After a role as an extra in Mom (2017), Dimri made her acting debut with Shreyas Talpade's directorial debut, the 2017 comedy Poster Boys , starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Talpade in lead roles. [7] An official remake of the Marathi film Poshter Boyz , it featured her as Talpade's love interest. [8] [9] A critic for Bollywood Hungama noted that Dimri's performance was overshadowed by others in the ensemble cast, yet found her to be "decent". [10] She next appeared in a leading role in the 2018 critically acclaimed romantic drama Laila Majnu , opposite Avinash Tiwary. In her review for Firstpost, Anna M. M. Vetticad noted that she "imbued her Laila with an edge that made the character's constant flirtations with danger believable". [11] Following its release digitally, many outlets assigned the film cult status despite its commercial failure. [12] [13] [14] Dimri later admitted to struggling to cope with the films failure at the box-office. [15]
After a short hiatus, Dimri achieved her breakthrough as the protagonist in Anvita Dutt's 2020 supernatural drama Bulbbul , reuniting with Tiwari for a second time. Produced by Anushka Sharma, the film was met with positive reviews from critics. [16] Namrata Joshi of The Hindu wrote, "From the vulnerable and the innocent to the transformation into the mysterious tease, Dimri is a stunner who speaks volumes with her eyes. And the audience can do little but stay enraptured". [17] Her performance earned her a Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Actor, Web Original Film (Female). [18]
In 2022, Dimri reunited with Dutt and starred in the title role of the critically acclaimed Qala . [19] The film received positive reviews from critics with Dimri's performance as an aspiring singer struggling to balance her personal life alongside her growing career receiving praise. [20] Sanatanu Das of the Hindustan Times found Dimri to be "in fine form" but added that "her character is frustratingly one-note and delivered mostly in the same anxious wavelength". [21] Dimri said that she deliberately chose to star in Qala to diversify her filmography and improve as an actor by appearing in genres she was previously unfamiliar with. [22]
Dimri appeared in a brief role in the top-grossing action drama Animal (2023), starring Ranbir Kapoor. [23] Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times was appreciative of Dimri's short appearance in the film. [24] The film proved to be a significant advancement in Dimri's career with her role gaining her wider recognition. [25] She received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. [26] She credited the success of Animal with providing her access to a wider variety of roles. [27]
In the following year, Dimri had a starring role alongside Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk in Bad Newz , a comedy about heteropaternal superfecundation. [28] She admitted that she found the comedy genre challenging, having grown accustomed to working in dramatic pieces. [29] NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee found her lacking in her portrayal of a "befuddled character". [30] Many critics lamented the reduction of Dimri’s character to mere eye candy, especially when compared to her roles in both Bulbbul and Qala. [31] [32] The film emerged a modest commercial success. [33]
Dimri will next star with Rajkummar Rao in the 1990s-set masala film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, [34] Kartik Aaryan starrer horror comedy film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 , [35] and with Siddhant Chaturvedi in a remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal , titled Dhadak 2 . [36]
Dimri was featured by Forbes Asia in their 30 Under 30 list of 2021. [3] She ranked 8th in Rediff.com's list of Bollywood Best Actresses of 2020. [37] She ranked 20th in The Times of India 's 50 Most Desirable Women List of 2020. [38]
