The Palm Trump International Hotel & Tower was a proposed skyscraper hotel and residential complex at the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. It was a joint venture between the Trump Organization and Dubai-based Nakheel, a government-owned company, and was announced on October 5, 2005. This building and other prestigious building projects throughout Dubai in late 2008 were never built, largely as a result of the global credit crunch. [6]
The project was officially cancelled by Nakheel in February 2011, [7] and Nakheel opened Al Ittihad Park on the site in November 2012. [8]
The Trump International Hotel & Tower was to be the first development from the Trump Organization in the Middle East, but the project ultimately failed. During the planning phase, Donald Trump stated "When I look at potential sites for real estate investment, I concentrate on 'location, location, location' – and this is the best location not only in Dubai but the whole of the Middle East." [9] Christina Aguilera was booked to entertain guests at Trump's Los Angeles estate for the launch party on 23 August 2008. [10]
The joint venture of Al Habtoor Engineering and Murray & Roberts was selected as the preferred construction bidder in late 2007, and the estimated completion date was set to 2009 at a cost of US$600,000,000(equivalent to $881,660,000 in 2023). Foundation work started in August 2007. [11] By 2008, the estimated cost had increased to US$789,000,000(equivalent to $1,116,550,000 in 2023). [10] In late November 2008, the Trump International Hotel & Tower was one of three "landmark projects" to be delayed by Nakheel, as it was struggling with the global financial crisis. [12]
During construction, one bidder offered US$3,022(equivalent to $4,093 in 2023) per square foot for one of the two planned penthouses. [13] By February 2011, the status of the project was unclear. [14] After the project was cancelled, Trump stated "[he and Nakheel] were smart and we got a little bit lucky that we never started that job" in a 2014 interview. [8]
Orlando-based HHCP Design International, Inc. (Managing Partner, Gregory Dungan, AIA) created the master plan for the Palm Jumeriah and the original design for the Trump International Hotel & Tower. The first design was nicknamed the "Golden Tulip" [15] and featured a circular tower surrounded by four large golden petals attached to the sides. [16] The Golden Tulip design won an award from the American Resort Development Association in 2006. [17] Trump stated that he "wasn't a huge fan of [the Tulip design]". [15]
HHCP’s design for the tower, due to begin construction at end of next year, merges traditional Arab/Islamic design philosophies with an innovative sense of modernity. Atkins Global was asked to evaluate the HHCP design in February 2006, [15] and responded by revealing an updated concept design in November 2006. [18] The senior design architect was Lee Morris. [19] In Morris's design, two asymmetrical towers, linked at the 40th storey, form an archway over the Palm Jumeirah Monorail. The 62 storey-high towers feature stainless steel, glass, and stone facades, and a monorail station is located at the base of the two towers. The towers were planned to include a 378-room hotel (in the shorter tower) and a 397-apartment residential component (including two penthouse apartments, in the taller tower). [11] [15] [18] [20]
The Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Developed and managed by Jumeirah, it is one of the tallest hotels in the world, although 39% of its total height is made up of non-occupiable space. Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island that is 280 m (920 ft) from Jumeirah Beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to resemble the sail of a dhow. It has a helipad near the roof, at a height of 210 m (689 ft) above ground.
Jebel Ali is a port town 35 kilometers (22 mi) south-west of Dubai. The Jebel Ali Port is located there. Al Maktoum International Airport has been constructed just outside the port area. Jebel Ali is connected to Dubai via the UAE Exchange, Danube and Energy stations on the Dubai Metro. Among the infrastructure projects built to support the port and town is the world's largest desalination plant, the Jebel Ali Desalination Plant, providing an ample supply of freshwater.
Nakheel Properties is a real estate development company based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The formal name of the company is Nakheel PJSC and it was a subsidiary of Dubai World and a private state-owned enterprise.
Palm Jebel Ali is an artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It began construction in October 2002 and was originally planned to be completed by mid-2008 but has been on hold since. It was relaunched in 2023.

Nakheel Tower was a planned skyscraper on hold in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by developer Nakheel. The project was previously called Al Burj. While the proposal changed over time, the tower was intended to be the tallest building in the world, surpassing the 828-metre (2,717 ft) Burj Khalifa which was completed in 2010.

Almas Tower is a 68-storey, 360 m (1,180 ft), supertall skyscraper in the Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Construction of the office building began in early 2005 and was completed in 2008 with the installation of some remaining cladding panels at the top of the tower. The building was topped out in 2008, and became the tallest building in Dubai until 2009 when it was surpassed by Burj Khalifa.

This has made real estate and other developments more valuable, thus resulting in a property boom from 2004 to 2006. Construction on a large scale has turned Dubai into one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. There are a number of large-scale projects which are currently under construction or are to be constructed in the future. Due to the heavy construction which is taking place in Dubai, 30,000 construction cranes, which are 25% of cranes worldwide, are operating in Dubai. Due to the burst of construction, Dubai has acquired various building-related records, which include: the world's tallest tower, the world's largest shopping mall, the world's largest fountain and the world's tallest hotel. Also under construction is Dubailand, which will be almost twice the size of the Walt Disney World Resort.
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), an architecture firm and design firm based in Chicago, is engaged in the design and development of energy-efficient and sustainable architecture. AS+GG designs buildings, cities, masterplans and components of these, for an international clientele, with projects located throughout the world. The primary uses of these designs are civic, commercial, cultural, hospitality, residential and mixed-use. AS+GG also specializes in supertall skyscrapers, such as the Jeddah Tower, which will overtake the Burj Khalifa as the world's tallest building when completed.
Istithmar World ("istithmar" for "investment" is an investment firm based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This company is a state-run business owned by Dubai World, a Dubai government-owned company, and was established in 2003. Originally known as "Istithmar," the company was renamed as "Istithmar World" in 2008.
The Palm Monorail is a monorail line on the Palm Jumeirah island in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is operated by the UK-based Serco. The monorail connects the Palm Jumeirah to the mainland, with a planned further extension to the Red Line of the Dubai Metro. The line opened on April 30, 2009 as the Palm Jumeirah Monorail. It is the first monorail in the Middle East.
There are many tourist attractions in Dubai, resulting from the large scale construction boom. Dubai received 14 million tourists from all around the world in 2015. Euromonitor ranked the world's 150 most visited cities by international tourists in 2009; Dubai ranked 7th. Dubai welcomed 14.36M visitors in 2022. Dubai's economy relies on many sections of the "state", one of the most important being tourism, in 2014 total 70,475,636 passengers traveled through Dubai Airport.
Kempinski Hotel & Residences Palm Jumeirah are the first residences to open on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. The project was due to open in 2009, however has been delayed due to the economic down turn. The property began construction in 2006.
Kabir Mulchandani is an Indian-born, Dubai-based real estate and hospitality businessman and philanthropist. He is the Founder and Chairman of FIVE Holdings, which includes FIVE Hotels and Resorts; FIVE Palm Jumeirah, FIVE Jumeirah Village, FIVE Zurich, FIVE LUXE, and FIVE Music along with The Pacha Group.
DAMAC Properties is an Emirati property development company, based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Founded by Hussain Sajwani, it was listed on the Dubai Financial Market in early 2015. The company was delisted in 2022 after it was taken private again; Sajwani, who retained 72% of all shares, purchased the remaining shares for 2.19 billion AED. The company operates internationally.
Nakheel Mall is a retail, dining and entertainment shopping mall that is located at the heart of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Nakheel is an Arabic name that means 'date palm trees' in English.

And if Trump's campaign so far is anything to go by, I suspect we're all in for a good laugh as well. In case you've missed it, Trump has been busy with another outburst lately, this time targeting the Arab world. He told CNN last week that Arab nations should hand over $5bn to the USA in return for bombing Libya — something he would have demanded as president.
Question marks have also been raised over the $2.9bn Trump International Hotel and Tower, which was due to be located on the Palm's trunk. In February this year, a spokesperson for the Trump Organisation refused to deny or confirm whether the project would go ahead.
