Twilight Syndrome [lower-alpha 1] is a horror-themed adventure game series released exclusively in Japan. It was created by Human Entertainment and continued by Spike after Human folded in the late 1990s. The games generally follow high school girls investigating urban legends about ghosts and other paranormal happenings in their school and neighborhood.
The first two games were directed by Goichi Suda and released for the PlayStation in 1996. Suda entered the position partway through development and thus did not have much creative input. He was more deeply involved with the next game in the series, Moonlight Syndrome , but left Human shortly after to found his own company, Grasshopper Manufacture. The series was retained by Spike, which released a spiritual sequel in the form of Yuuyami Doori Tankentai , before releasing two more Twilight Syndrome games, one for the PlayStation in 2000 and a Nintendo DS game in 2008.
The games have been praised for their atmosphere and realistic 3D sound. Three live-action films based on the series have been released in Japan.
Twilight Syndrome is a series of adventure games about high school girls investigating paranormal urban legends. [16] [14] The investigation of each rumor is split into individual chapters. [17] [18] Typically each chapter begins with the characters discussing a rumor and then embarking to investigate it on foot. [17] [18] The environments are explored in a side-scrolling manner, [16] and the game periodically shifts to still image scenes with scrolling text. [17] [18] The games have heavy visual novel elements [19] and the player must make numerous dialog choices during their adventure that will affect how the investigation progresses. If successful at making the correct decisions, the player will clear the scenario with the normal or best ending and unlock the next scenario. If it is failed, the player must retry. [17] [18] The realistic 3D sound effects are a staple in the series, and are best experienced with headphones. [14] [20] [21] The heart rate monitor on screen is another repeating element. [14]
The series was launched by Human Entertainment in 1996. [22] At the time, the company was working with 3D sound technology on arcade machines. The sound effects were received well by players, and the sound team thought it would be interesting to develop a game based on school ghost stories using this technology. [23] Development began but soon it was not progressing well. [23] The game's director had scheduling conflicts, so Goichi Suda was put in charge as director after finishing work on Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special (1994). [2] [3] Only three of the planned ten scenarios had been developed with only three months left of development time. In order to manage timelines, Suda divided the scenarios between two releases. Most of the game was already planned so he did not have much creative input. [2] [3] The first five scenarios were released as Twilight Syndrome: Tansaku-hen on 1 March 1996, [23] [24] and the final five scenarios following the same storyline were released four months later on 19 July as Kyūmei-hen. [23] [25]
Following the release of the original two games, Suda began work on Moonlight Syndrome. As writer and director, Suda was able to have significant creative input this time around. [7] While the original games focused on supernatural horror, Suda wanted to shift away from paranormal elements and write about violent incidents caused by people. [7] [3] [26] After the game was released on 9 October 1997, [27] Suda decided to leave Human Entertainment as he was unsatisfied with his bonuses, and felt the company would soon be bankrupt. [28] [2] Following his departure, he formed his own company Grasshopper Manufacture. [29]
After Human Entertainment folded in the late 1990s, some of the former staff went on to form Spike including some involved with Twilight Syndrome. [30] [31] The staff decided they wanted to develop a game that borrowed heavily from Twilight Syndrome's gameplay system, [32] [31] and added a new sense of realism. [33] After two and a half years of development, [34] Yuuyami Doori Tankentai was released on 7 October 1999 [35] in limited quantities. [36] It is considered a spiritual sequel to the original series. [8]
The producer from Yuuyami Doori Tankentai later reprised his role for the next game in the series, Twilight Syndrome: Saikai. The team sought for the new game to evolve on the original series formula in the same way as Yuuyami Doori Tantenkai. [23] They included lead male characters and junior high students to add variety, and added a new photo mode to walk around the school and take photos of spirits. [8] The previous games had 2D characters over 3D backgrounds, so this was the first in the series to use 3D polygons for the characters as well. [8] [23] It was released on 27 July 2000. [37]
The fourth game, subtitled Kinjirareta Toshi Densetsu, was released on the Nintendo DS on 24 July 2008. [38] The game borrows the same adventure gameplay as in earlier series entries, but uses the DS's touch screen for additional interactivity with in-game objects. [14] The development team included horror film director Osamu Fukutani, [39] and live actors were used to photograph the in-game images and record dialogue. [13] The team used binaural recording methods from Arnis Sound Technologies to record the sound, making for convincing 3D sound atmosphere if played with headphones. [22] [40]
The series has never been localized outside Japan. When asked about the possibility of localizing the series, Goichi Suda said that he was concerned foreign audiences would not understand the series. In addition to this, he was not personally interested in revisiting it as he did not write the original scenarios. [41]
The series has developed a fan following. [22] [40] Writing about the original game two games, Den Faminico Gamer wrote that they were great single-player experiences thanks to their strong atmosphere. The individuality of the three girls was described as well-characterized, and the unique side-scrolling movement as enjoyable and unusual in a horror game. [16] Famitsu enjoyed the unique gameplay as well as the 3D sound. [42] Writing about the Saikai, Famitsu again praised the sound atmosphere and believed the polygon graphics bettered the production value. [43] In 2006, game designer Hideo Kojima said he was a "big fan" of Twilight Syndrome and that he wanted to collaborate with Goichi Suda. [44]
Suda's studio Grasshopper Manufacture has borrowed settings and characters from Moonlight Syndrome for some of their works, including The Silver Case and Flower, Sun, and Rain . [7] [45] Suda also hired a writer to work on The Silver Case after reading their work in Twilight Syndrome Truth File, a guide retelling the incidents of the first two games from the perspective of fictional journalists reporting on it. [46]
A minigame called Twilight Syndrome: Murder Case appears in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (2012). It is about students investigating a murder that occurred in their school. [47] The series once again touches the narrative of the game in the anime prequel. [48]
The first film based on the series, Twilight Syndrome: Sotsugyō (Graduation) was released on 23 November 2000 starring Wakana Sakai. [49] [50] It is set four years after Saikai, and was filmed entirely in digital video. [50] Two more films were released around the time Kinjirareta Toshi Densetsu was released for the Nintendo DS. Dead Cruise was released on 2 August 2008 and Dead Go-round two weeks later on 16 August. [51] In Dead Cruise, six friends depart on a cruise and discover a game that can change reality and kill people in real life. [22] Dead Go-round follows seven people brought to a theme park to participate in a deadly game. [22]
Famitsu, formerly Famicom Tsūshin, is a line of Japanese video game magazines published by Kadokawa Game Linkage, a subsidiary of Kadokawa. Famitsu is published in both weekly and monthly formats as well as in the form of special topical issues devoted to only one console, video game company, or other theme. Shūkan Famitsū, the original Famitsu publication, is considered the most widely read and respected video game news magazine in Japan. From October 28, 2011, the company began releasing the digital version of the magazine exclusively on BookWalker weekly.
Thunder Force is a series of free-roaming scrolling shooter type video games developed by the Japanese software company Technosoft and published by Sega. The franchise is recognized for its distinctive gameplay, graphics, and synthesizer-based chiptune music soundtracks.

Human Corporation was a Japanese video game developer and publisher founded in 1983. The company produced games for a number of platforms, including home consoles, portable consoles, and personal computers. Human declared bankruptcy in 2000 and disbanded. Its former members went on to form new companies including Nude Maker, Sandlot, Spike, and Grasshopper Manufacture.
Mystery Dungeon, known in Japan as Fushigi no Dungeon, is a series of roguelike role-playing video games. Most were developed by Chunsoft, now Spike Chunsoft since the merging in 2012, and select games were developed by other companies with Chunsoft's permission. The series began when co–creator of Dragon Quest, Koichi Nakamura, was inspired by Seiichiro Nagahata's experience with Rogue, who is also a fellow developer from the company, and a desire to create an original series. It began on the Super Famicom, progressing to almost all of Nintendo's and Sony's home and handheld consoles, WonderSwan, Dreamcast, Windows, and mobile devices.
Masafumi Takada is a Japanese composer and sound designer, best known for his work on the soundtracks for killer7, God Hand, No More Heroes, and the Earth Defense Force and Danganronpa series. Takada often collaborates with guitarist and composer Jun Fukuda, and has worked on multiple projects for Goichi Suda's studio Grasshopper Manufacture.
Flower, Sun, and Rain is an adventure video game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Victor Interactive Software for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. It was initially only released in Japan. A port for the Nintendo DS (DS) was developed by h.a.n.d. under supervision by Grasshopper Manufacture. It was published by Marvelous Entertainment in Japan (2008) and North America (2009) and Rising Star Games in Europe (2008).
The Silver Case is an adventure visual novel video game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by ASCII Entertainment for the PlayStation in 1999. It was directed, designed and co-written by Goichi Suda. A remastered version was released digitally by Grasshopper Manufacture worldwide for Windows and macOS in 2016, while a port, a physical release, for the PlayStation 4 was released by NIS America in 2017; a Japanese release of the PlayStation 4 version was released in March 2018 by Nippon Ichi Software. A Linux port was released in August 2017. A port for the Nintendo DS was also in development, but never released due to Suda's dissatisfaction with the final product.
Moonlight Syndrome is a horror-themed adventure game developed and published by Human Entertainment for the PlayStation in October 1997. An entry in the company's Twilight Syndrome series, the game was directed and co-written by Goichi Suda. Retaining the combination of adventure and visual novel elements from earlier games in the series, Moonlight Syndrome follows series protagonist Mika Kishii as she investigates supernatural phenomena.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team are a matched pair of Pokémon video games for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, respectively. The games were developed by Chunsoft, published by The Pokémon Company, and distributed by Nintendo. Red Rescue Team was the last Pokémon game released for the Game Boy Advance. The two versions are mostly identical, with Blue Rescue Team taking advantage of the dual-screen features and increased graphical and sound capabilities of the Nintendo DS. The 25th Ward: The Silver Case is an adventure game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture. Acting as a sequel to the company's debut title The Silver Case, it was first released for mobile devices in October 2005, remained in service through different providers until May 2011. The original version's gameplay focuses on solving puzzles using number inputs. The story, set seven years after The Silver Case, follows a new group of characters in the 25th Ward district solving a series of murders.

Yuuyami Doori Tankentai is a horror-themed adventure game developed and published by Spike for the PlayStation. It plays similarly to the Twilight Syndrome series by Human Entertainment, and follows a story of Japanese youths exploring paranormal urban legends in their neighborhood. The player can choose to play as one of three junior high students, first eavesdropping on rumors being discussed at their school, then investigating these rumors in the city that can be freely explored.
Kazutaka Kodaka is a Japanese video game designer, writer and mangaka. His work is known for recurring themes of contrasting hope/despair, luck/talent, truth/lies; mixing tragedy with dark humor, numerous plot-twists etc. He was an employee of Spike Chunsoft and is widely known as the creator and writer of the Danganronpa franchise. He left the company in 2017 and founded Too Kyo Games with other ex-employees.
