The Department of Computer Science (or DCS) at the University of Toronto is an administrative unit within the Faculty of Arts and Science. The Department is one of the highest-ranked Computer Science departments worldwide, placing first among Canadian universities. [4] [5] [6]
In 1947, Professors B. A. Griffith and A. F. C Stevenson of the Department of Mathematics and V. G. Smith of the Department of Engineering applied for a $10,000 grant from the National Research Council to open a computing department at the University of Toronto. [7] : 61 In September 1947 the first funds were provided by the NRC to purchase two IBM punch card mechanical calculators and two assistants to run them; Beatrice Worsley joined the new department in January 1948. [8] : 54 In 1951, the Computation Centre was established, with Calvin Gotlieb (previously a member of the Physics Department) as its first faculty member. The Centre housed the first electronic computer in Canada, a Ferranti Mark 1 named "FERUT". [7] : 61
The Computation Centre was renamed the Institute for Computer Science in 1962, before being absorbed by the newly-created Department of Computer Science in 1964. The new department, with only six faculty members and four graduate students, had Canada's only computer science doctorate program at the time. The Dynamic Graphics Project was founded as a research laboratory of the Department in 1967. [9] An undergraduate program was introduced in 1971, and the Department became an administrative unit in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1981. [10]
The Bahen Centre for Information Technology opened in 2002 and became the central hub of computer science and engineering activities along with the Sandford Fleming Building. The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga was formed in 2003. [10]
The Department has sixteen research groups: [11]
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto consistently ranks among the highest in the world. The Department of Computer Science is the computer science department of the University of Oxford, England, which is part of the university's Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. It was founded in 1957 as the Computing Laboratory. By 2014 the staff count was 52 members of academic staff and over 80 research staff. The 2019, 2020 and 2021 Times World University Subject Rankings places Oxford University 1st in the world for Computer Science. Oxford University is also the top university for computer science in the UK and Europe according to Business Insider. The 2020 QS University Subject Rankings places The University of Oxford 5th in the world for Computer Science.
Calvin Carl "Kelly" Gotlieb, was a Canadian professor and computer scientist who has been called the "Father of Computing" in Canada. He was a Professor in Computer Science at the University of Toronto.
In logic and theoretical computer science, and specifically proof theory and computational complexity theory, proof complexity is the field aiming to understand and analyse the computational resources that are required to prove or refute statements. Research in proof complexity is predominantly concerned with proving proof-length lower and upper bounds in various propositional proof systems. For example, among the major challenges of proof complexity is showing that the Frege system, the usual propositional calculus, does not admit polynomial-size proofs of all tautologies. Here the size of the proof is simply the number of symbols in it, and a proof is said to be of polynomial size if it is polynomial in the size of the tautology it proves.
The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science is a professional school within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. QS World University Rankings ranked the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science 24th in the world, 10th in North America and 2nd in Canada in Computer Science in 2014. U.S. News & World Report ranked the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science 18th in world, 10th in North America and first in Canada.
