The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation(UPMRC) is a joint venture company that operates the Lucknow Metro, Kanpur Metro and Agra Metro. [2] The Varanasi Metro, Prayagraj Metro, Gorakhpur Metro, and Bareilly Metro are proposed by UPMRC. The company's headquarters is at Vipin Khand, Gomti Nagar in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Noida Metro, although located in Uttar Pradesh, is not operated by UPMRC and is instead operated by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC), a separate company.

Similarly, Meerut Metro and Delhi Meerut RRTS also located in Uttar Pradesh are not operated by UPMRC and are instead operated by National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

History

The LMRC was formed as a special purpose vehicle by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2013 to build and operate the Lucknow Metro. [4] [5]

The formation of LMRC was formally approved by the Cabinet of Uttar Pradesh Government in June 2013. [6]

The SPV was incorporated under Companies Act, 1956 on 25 November 2013, [5] and it got the certificate to commence business on 24 December 2013. [5] The authorised capital of the company was decided to be 2,000 crore (US$240 million). [5]

In 2016, to speed up clearance processes for Lucknow Metro, LMRC became a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. [7]

As a result, the LMRC board was reconstituted with five nominee directors being nominated by both Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh each, apart from the three full-time directors. Additionally, the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh was replaced by the Union Urban Development Secretary as the ex-officio Chairman of LMRC. [7]

In 2017. the Lucknow Metro was inaugurated and opened to the public. [8]

In 2018, LMRC was reconstituted to cover and implement other metro projects in the state and renamed as Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation. [2]

In 2021, the Kanpur Metro was open to the public. This was the fastest built and commissioned metro system in the world built in 24 months.

On 6 March 2024, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority corridor of the Agra Metro.

Apart from operating Lucknow Metro, Kanpur Metro, UPMRC also provides consultancy services for Metro projects in Uttar Pradesh.

UPMRC in association with RITES has prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for Metro in various cities of Uttar Pradesh. UPMRC is also currently working as an interim consultant for implementation of Agra Metro, Prayagraj Metro, and Varanasi Metro and also Gorakhpur Metro projects.

Along with this number of ropeway projects are also under implementation stage including Varanasi Ropeway Project. [21]

Kanpur Metro has faced criticism for its low ridership. It had daily average ridership of only 8,000 to 10,000 passengers a day. [22]

Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad Metro are run by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. While Meerut Metro and Delhi Meerut RRTS are operated by National Capital Region Transport Corporation.

Another RRTS connecting Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Jewar is expected to also start construction, Geographical survey and DPR preparation is currently underway. The Uttar Pradesh government will fund 50% of the project, while 20% will come from the Centre and the remaining 30 will be borne by Yeida, and Greater Noida. [23]

The Agra Metro is a rapid transit system in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. The metro is owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). It is set to consist of two metro lines, with a total length of 29.65 kilometres (18.42 mi) and 27 stations. The Agra Metro is one of four rapid transit system in Uttar Pradesh, the others being the Lucknow Metro, Meerut Metro, Kanpur Metro, and Noida Metro.

The Meerut Metro is an under-construction rapid transit system, which will serve the city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is being built in two phases, of which the first phase with the first line will cover 23.6 km (14.7 mi) with 13 stations, from Modipuram to Meerut South. It will have nine elevated, three underground stations, one at-grade station as the depot station at Modipuram, and four stations integrated with the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System on a single corridor, making the metro the first such rapid transit system in India to be merged directly with a regional transit system. The Varanasi Metro is a light rail transit system proposed for the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The proposed system consists of 2 corridors that span from BHEL to Banaras Hindu University (19.35 km) and Benia Bagh to Sarnath (9.885 km). The feasibility study of the project was done by RITES and was completed in June 2015.

Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC), also called a UP State Industrial Development Corporation, is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, which promotes industries and develops industrial infrastructure in the State. Its industrial areas are equipped with infrastructure facilities likes roads, drains, internal power lines, street lights, etc.

The Prayagraj Metrolite, formerly Allahabad Metro, is a proposed light rail system for the city of Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, India. The proposed system will consist of two lines, an east–west line from Manauri to Trivenipuram, and a north–south line from Shantipuram in Jalalapur to Karchana. Both lines will be about 20 kilometres (12 mi) long. There will be a total of 39 stations, 20 on the east–west line and 19 on the north–south line. The project is expected to cost 8000 crore.

The Gorakhpur Metrolite is a light rapid transit system proposed for the city of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The network will consist of 2 elevated lines serving 27 stations with a total length of 27.41 kilometres. The project is estimated to cost 4,672 crore (US$560 million). It is expected to be completed by 2027.

Metrolite is a light rail (LRT) urban transit system being planned in India for cities with lower ridership projection and as a feeder system for the existing metro systems. It will cater to lower passenger capacity at a reduced cost than a metro line. It will have dedicated tracks, separated from the road.

The Ghaziabad–Jewar Regional Rapid Transit System is a proposed 72.44 km (45.01 mi)-long semi high-speed rail and regional transit corridor that will connect the National Capital Region (NCR) cities of Ghaziabad, Noida and Noida International Airport at Jewar. It is the fourth of the four rapid rail corridors planned under the first phase of the RapidX project managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). It will be built to allow a maximum speed of 180 km/h (110 mph), and the distance between Ghaziabad, Noida and its airport will be covered in less than 40–50 minutes. The project will be executed at a cost of around 20,640 crore (US$2.5 billion). It will start from Ghaziabad as the starting station, run through Noida, Greater Noida, YEIDA City and end in Jewar Airport at Jewar. It will have 12 stations and two depots on both the northern and southern ends of the corridor.
